Soil pollution of fluorine is a serious environmental problem in the world, and the fluorine pollution evaluation of spatial and vertical distribution study in the Karst region is quite limited. In this study, the farmland around lead-zinc mine in the Karst region was chosen as the study area. Ninety-one upper layer soil samples and two soil profiles (one in paddy field, the other one in aerated field) samples were taken. The average concentration of total fluorine of topsoil in the paddy fields is 378 mg/kg, whereas in the aerated field it is 508 mg/kg. The concentrations of total fluorine in all paddy soil samples and 97.87% aerated field soils are higher than that of the background value of Guangxi. The total fluorine contaminations in all aerated field soils are much higher than in paddy soil samples, so the aerated field is contaminated severely. The vertical distribution of fluorine is different in paddy field and aerated field. In paddy field, the content of fluorine increases from 20 to 40 cm, then it decreases rapidly from 40 to 60 cm in depth, and then increases gradually. However, in the aerated field, the content of fluorine rises gradually with the depth of the sampling point. The results of relative analysis and regression analysis between fluorine in soil and soil properties show that the spatial distribution and vertical variation of fluorine in this region are mainly affected by parent rock.

Soils collected from paddy fields were kept in a waterlogged condition in glass cylinders with and without drainage. After about 2 months of waterlogging soil samples were collected from each cm. depths of the cylinders, both from the bright and dark sides of the cylinders. The soil samples were analysed for iron, manganese and phosphorus. At the beginning these elements were uniformly distributed throughout the entire soil depth, but as a result of waterlogging a distribution pattern developed. More of these elements concentrated on the surface and illuminated sides of the cylinders. It is assumed that such a phenomenon also occurs in the paddy field. These elements by concentrating on the soil surface limit the feeding zones to the top 3–5 cm. of the soil.

Radon and its short-lived progenies contributed significantly to natural background radiation. Long-term exposure to such radiation increases the probability of lung cancer to persons. To assess the radiological hazards associated with the inhalation of radon gas from ore dust in Mazat and Kafi-Habu mining sites of Plateau, Nigeria, 12 soil samples from an abandoned tailing dump ground were collected and analysed for radon using RAD-7 electronic detector. The dose rate of each sampling point was directly measured using RADOS RDS -120 portable survey meter. The results gave a mean radon concentration ranging from 771.51 ± 21.9 Bq/m3 to 5666.13 ± 28.8 Bq/m3 with 3451.13 ± 42.9 Bq/m3as the average value for all measurements. The average concentration of measurements from Mazat and Kafi-Habu is 3671.6 ± 41.2 Bq/m3 and 3010.16 ± 46.5 Bq/m3 respectively. The average values obtained from the analysis are significantly higher than the upper limit of 300 Bq/m3 set by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) suggesting quick remediation on the host communities. The geometrical mean value of Dose Rate (DR) and Annual Effective Dose Equivalent (AEDE) were 870 nGy/hr and 1.04 mSv/yr respectively. Again, these values are above the global average limits of 59 nGy/hr and 1 mSv/yr. The result indicates that miners working in those sites and dwellers of the study areas are at higher risk of getting exposed to radon and need to employ protective measures. ABSTRACTRecurrent treatments withBacillus thuringiensissubsp.israelensisare required to control the floodwater mosquitoAedes vexansthat breeds in large numbers in the wetlands of the Bolle di Magadino Reserve in Canton Ticino, Switzerland. Interventions have been carried out since 1988. In the present study, the spatial distribution of restingB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores in the soil was measured. TheB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisconcentration was determined in soil samples collected along six transects covering different elevations within the periodically flooded zones. A total of 258 samples were processed and analyzed by quantitative PCR that targeted an identical fragment of 159 bp for theB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensis cry4Aaandcry4Bagenes.B. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores were found to persist in soils of the wetland reserve at concentrations of up to 6.8 log per gram of soil. Continuous accumulation due to regular treatments could be excluded, as the decrease in spores amounted to 95.8% (95% confidence interval, 93.9 to 97.7%). The distribution of spores was correlated to the number ofB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensistreatments, the elevation of the sampling point, and the duration of the flooding periods. The number ofB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensistreatments was the major factor influencing the distribution of spores in the different topographic zones (P< 0.0001). These findings indicated thatB. thuringiensissubsp.israelensisspores are rather immobile after their introduction into the environment.

Paddy residues are the most generous agricultural biomass from the paddy cultivation, Paddy residues practices include crop residue amendment and in-situ burning. It indicated that residue amendment increased the organic carbon and nutrient contents in soil, However, an open residue burning is still a common practice in Thailand despite of strict law enforcements and proper education to farmers about its implications on soil, human and animal health The present study determined how residues management practices: residue amendment and stubble burning, influence the soil organic carbon by determining δ13C in paddy soil profile. The 30 cm depth soil samples from the naturally straw amendment and stubble burning paddy fields were collected in Chiang Khwan district, Roi-et province during 2017. The δ13C values with soil depth showed that residue management practices produce statistical differences in both soils. The δ13C values of soil samples from amendment and burning sites ranged from-23.19‰ to-17.98‰ and-24.79‰ to-19.28‰, respectively. Carbon isotopes differentiate clearly between amendment site (more positive values) and burning site (more negative values). The results from this study were in accordance with literatures which reported that the δ13C distribution in the soil profile can be applied to study in SOC dynamics as a result of different paddy residue management practices (amendment or burning). Further research is needed to confirm the validity of the stable carbon isotope technique in this type of studies.

In this work, different soil samples were extracted from seven sites in the vicinity of the Northwest China Lead–Zinc Smelter. A simplified standard addition method with LIBS (SAM-LIBS) was proposed to carry out quantitative analysis of Pb in solid soil samples. The method proposed in this work can be used for rapid assessment of the contaminants in soils.
