Livy preserves two explanations of the Senatorial decision of 445 B.C. to suspend the election of consuls and to confer imperium consulare upon tribuni militum. One, which he himself accepts, is that it was a political compromise designed to appease agitation for plebeian representation in the consulship. The other is that the military situation demanded the appointment of at least three holders of imperium. Until some forty years ago the majority of scholars, even if ready to admit that the reform had military advantages, joined with Livy in laying the chief emphasis on the political motive. More recently, however, the tendency has been to disown the connection between the innovation and the struggle for office. The change is explained as necessitated wholly by growing military commitments or administrative needs. My purpose here is merely to defend once again the traditional account that the decision of 445 B.C. marked an important stage in the Struggle of the Orders and to remove the major difficulties which have discouraged its acceptance.

Miss Dorothy Stimson, Dean of Groucher College, U.S.A., in an article in Isis for 1 September 1935, tried to traverse the view stated in the Introduction to my Comenius in England (Oxford University Press (1932)), pp. 6-7, that the visit of Comenius (Komensky) to London in 1641-1642 marked an important stage in the development in England of the idea of a great society for scientific research which resulted in the organization of the informal ‘Invisible College’ by Theodore Haak and others in 1645, and prepared the way for the foundation of the Royal Society in 1662. She was however unable to explain away the fact that Theodore Haak, who was one of the most active supporters of Komensky’s plan for a Scientific College in 1641, was in 1645 the virtual founder of the informal ‘Invisible College,’ the precursor of the Royal Society. Miss Stimson stresses the contrast between the universal speculative plan of Comenius as outlined in his Via Lucis (1642), and the empirical and specialized activities of the Invisible College. Miss Stimson however has completely overlooked the fact that John Wilkins (1614-1672), Warden of Wadham College, Oxford, whom she rightly regards as one of the most active members of the Invisible College, held views very similar to those of Comenius on scientific method and on the desirability of a universal language.

To optimize the management of infertile women the estimation of efficacy of endoscopic methods of treatment (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy) in this category of patients was undertaken. With the method of retrospective analysis clinico- laboratory and endoscopic examination of2785 sterile pairs was carried out. The results of the study showed that endoscopic methods are not only the most important stage of diagnostics but also the first pathogenetically substantiated stage in treating female infertility. It became clear that half of the patients demonstrated from 2 till 5 factors in pathogenesis of reproductive function abnormalities that brings on the necessity of elaboratingthe algorithm of treatingparticular patients considering the disturbances revealed.So, to increase the effectiveness of treating the patients in question, distinct standards of medical care should be put into practice.

AbstractThis article will show that Ovid's well-known innovations in the use of personification allegory combine closely with those of Virgil, to form a distinctive 'Augustan' phase in the development of allegory in classical literature. Both Ovid and Virgil make fictional abstractions concrete and ontologically ambiguous. Innovations common to both the Aeneid and Metamorphoses constitute an important stage in the emergence of 'compositional allegory', in the wake of the Roman adoption of Stoicising interpretative reading practices in the course of the first century BC. Both epics involve Furies as models for their major personified abstractions, both in narrative role and in concrete detail. Uniquely in and to Roman literature, Furies changed from supernatural beings into personified abstractions. This change, enabled by the semantic replacement of proper names such as Erinys or Eumenis with the word Furia ('frenzy'), produced new depth and complexity in the form and metaliterary function of personifications in Roman epic and later literary traditions.

Early childhood education is an important stage to be prepared carefully and conceptually. The verses in the Koran can be used as a guide in providing the values of early childhood education in an Islamic way to face modern life today. This study aims to discuss early childhood education in the Koran, stages of early childhood education in the Koran, Surah Luqman, and the concept of early childhood education in the Koran, Surah Lukman. This research uses the literature study method. This study found that early childhood education has beneficial roles in life. This study also found seven stages of educating early childhood and six concepts of early childhood education in the Koran, Surat Luqman. A researcher hopes that this research can be useful for future research in the field of early childhood education from an Islamic perspective.

The task of improving the system of accounting and analysis of accidents at industrial enterprises for many years has not lost its relevance both in Kazakhstan and abroad. Identification of the root causes of accidents is an important stage for the development and implementation of preventive and adaptive measures to reduce the risk of injuries to employees of enterprises. The article analyzes the characteristics of the indicators of industrial injuries, which are result — oriented (after the fact) — lagging and process-oriented (forecast) - leading. Lagging indicators are a retrospective description of the state of labor protection at a production facility, while advancing indicators characterize already completed or current actions and predict the result of the productivity of measures. The expediency of using leading indicators for predictive assessment of the state of industrial safety and, as a result, the development of a systematic approach to minimizing the number of incidents is justified. Analyzing and managing raw data are still a challenging part of the data analysis process, mainly regarding data preprocessing. Although we can find studies proposing design implications or recommendations for visualization solutions in the data analysis scope, they do not focus on challenges during the preprocessing phase. Likewise, the current Visual Analytics processes do not consider preprocessing an equally important stage in their process. Thus, with this study, we aim to contribute to the discussion of how we can use and combine methods of visualization and data mining to assist data analysts during the preprocessing activities. To achieve that, we introduce the Preprocessing Profiling Model for Visual Analytics, which contemplates a set of features to inspire the implementation of new solutions. In turn, these features were designed considering a list of insights we obtained during an interview study with thirteen data analysts. Our contributions can be summarized as offering resources to promote a shift to a visual preprocessing.

Streamer Discharges

Electric streamer discharges (streamers) in the air are a very important stage of lightning, taking place before formation of the leader discharge, and with which an electric discharge starts from conducting objects which enhance the background electric field, such as airplanes. Despite years of research, it is still not well understood what mechanism determines the values of a streamer’s parameters, such as its radius and propagation velocity. The novel Streamer Parameter Model (SPM) was made to explain this mechanism, and to provide a way to efficiently calculate streamer parameters. Previously, we demonstrated that SPM results compared well with a limited set of experimental data. In this article, we compare SPM predictions to the published hydrodynamic simulation (HDS) results.
