It is universally acknowledged that project-based learning (PBL) plays a fundamental role in language teaching and the learning process. In some developed countries with advanced education, PBL has been applied to language teaching and learning widely and effectively. However, in the context of Vietnam, PBL is unlikely to be viewed as an integral approach to enhance students’ self-directed abilities in their learning. This paper aimed at investigating EFL high school students’ attitudes towards PBL when they implemented PBL with the new English textbooks at Bui Thi Xuan High School in Vietnam. This study involved one hundred and fifty-five EFL high school students in answering the questionnaire and forty students in responding to semi-structured interview questions. The quantitative data were processed by SPSS in terms of descriptive statistics (means, standard deviation, and frequency), and content analysis was used for analyzing the qualitative data. The findings of the study showed that EFL high school students expressed positive attitudes (i.e. cognition, affection, and behavior) toward PBL. The data from the semi-structured interview were coded and analyzed to make the results of the study clearer. These preliminary findings are hoped to contribute to a better understanding of the current perspectives of applying PBL into language learning in the Vietnamese context so that practical implications should be made in order to enhance the quality of teaching in English language education in Da Lat specifically and Vietnam in general.

This study aimed to explore the tourism vocational high school (VHS) students' experience of EFL learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative study was utilized to obtain 20 students' experience. The data were obtained from grades 10 and 11 students of tourism VHS in Yogyakarta. A semi-structured interview was conducted, and verbatim transcripts were analyzed using inductive and thematic analysis approaches. Three major themes were identified from the students' experiences, namely (a) how they conducted the EFL teaching and learning, (b) language learning strategies, and (c) perceptions of online EFL learning. It was found that students have made use of all available resources. This study suggests that students have used appropriate language learning strategies for online EFL learning, such as cognitive, metacognitive, resource management, and social strategies. Their perceptions toward EFL online learning were mainly positive. However, students still prefer face-to-face learning to online learning.

The number of Japanese language learners in Indonesia has reached second place in the world (The Japan Foundation, 2015). However, Japanese language skills of learners in Indonesia are still very far behind from other countries, especially China and South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to discuss the causes of the lack of development on Japanese language learning abilities in Indonesia with the curriculum approach used. To answer these problems, author analysed data by The Japan Foundation, interviewed Japanese language teachers at one national high school in Bandung, and reviewed the curriculum that was being used. The results showed that most of Japanese language learners in Indonesia are at the secondary education level and mostly are high school students. However, the purpose of the Japanese language teaching curriculum in high schools in Indonesia does not require students to master Japanese to the upper level. Therefore, even though the number of Japanese language learners in Indonesia is large, but because the target of language acquisition is low, the Japanese language ability also tends to be low.

This research presents the results of a case study that analyses the Solidarity Atocha project, which was implemented at a school in Madrid, Spain, and in which 114 first-year High school students participated. The main objective of this study is to analyse the experience of students that participated in the Solidarity Atocha project and to understand how they evaluated it and how satisfied they were with it. The method applied in this case study is a mixed one that used both qualitative and quantitative techniques. A semantic differential and a semi-structured interview were used to collect data. In general, the results obtained reveal a very positive evaluation from the students, mainly in terms of teamwork and the use of digital tools. However, they encountered some difficulties with regard to the time spent on the project and to guidance provided as they worked on it. Inferential analyses show significant differences between the team groups.

It is widely acknowledged that language learning strategies (LLSs) are beneficial to learners’ academic achievements, learner autonomy and motivation; however, it is indicated that Vietnamese students, particularly high school students have found it hard to employ LLSs. This paper aims at exploring language learning strategies used by high school students and underlying reasons at a high school located in Ho Chi Minh City. The study involved 238 EFL high school students in responding to a closed-ended questionnaire and twenty of them in answering the semi-structured interview questions. The quantitative data collected from the questionnaire were processed by SPSS version 25.0 in terms of descriptive statistics, and the qualitative data were analyzed by the content-based approach. The results of the study indicated the EFL high school students’ moderate use of LLSs. Remarkably, metacognitive strategies were the most commonly used category, compared to memory strategies – the least employed category. The findings may serve as a guideline for EFL teachers on facilitating high school students’ English language learning. It is also hoped that the results of this study may contribute to the literature about English language learning strategies in EFL contexts.

This research looks at listening as one factor that gives contribution toward speaking among high school students. The study attempts to reveal through data analysis, in the form of students. score from each variable that both have correlation. Further the objective of the study is also to find out the extent of influence contributed by listening toward speaking. The research applies library study and field study (instrument designing and test performing both for listening and speaking). The theory used for analysis deals with listening and speaking correlation from language learning review. The result of the study demonstrates that the correlation of listening as the independent variable with speaking as dependent variable is positive. It also proves that with a unit of program or treatment given toward listening class, there will be a significant improvement equals with 3.134 times from previous speaking score for the same sample. For the analysis of data, the extent of correlation between two varibales is shown as low. It indicates that even though listening do have positive correlation towarde speaking, it is not the only deminant factor to determine success in speaking.

The purposes of the present study are two-fold: (1) To examine whether social psychological variables, such as attitude and subjective norm, can predict South Korean English as a foreign language high school students’ intention to learn English, and (2) to identify the best social psychological model for sustainable second language learning in the context of South Korean English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. A total of 614 South Korean high school learners of English participated in the present study. Data collected from a survey questionnaire were analyzed using a structural equation modeling procedure. Results of the present study indicate that South Korean high school students’ attitudes toward learning English and subjective norms made a significant and independent contribution to the variance in their intention to study English. Among the three competing social psychological models examined in the current study, the theory of Planned Behavior and an expanded model of Gardner’s Socio-educational Model proved to be the most effective in terms of the strength of path coefficients and explanatory power. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are provided.

The goal of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of whether a short study abroad program is effective in increasing its participants’ willingness to communicate in a second language. Using a questionnaire designed by Yashima (2002), a pre-post design study was used to examine a sample of 80 Japanese junior high school students who participated in a ten-day study abroad program to Sydney, Australia. The results indicate that although there were no statistically significant differences seen in the second language learning motivation of the students participating in the study abroad program, there were salient decreases observed in the anxiety students felt towards speaking English. Furthermore, as clear differences were seen in international posture, joining the study abroad program also meant that students felt more a part of the global community. Based on these results, the author concludes that traveling abroad for the purposes of study is indeed effective for adolescent learners of English, helping them feel more comfortable using the language as a tool for communication. 本論の目的は、短期海外研修参加者の第2言語におけるWillingness to Communicate (WTC) の向上に及ぼす効果について、より深い知見を獲得することである。八島(2002)によって作成されたアンケートを用い、シドニー•オーストラリアでの10日間の海外研修に参加した80人の日本人中学生のサンプルを事前事後調査方式で研究を行った。結果からわかったことは、統計的にみると海外研修に参加した生徒の第2言語における学習意欲には有意差が見られなかったが、生徒が英語を話すことに対して抱いていた不安の軽減が顕著に見られたということである。さらに、国際的な姿勢に明らかな差異が見られ、海外研修への参加は、生徒が国際社会の一員としての認識を強めるものとなっていた。これらの結果により、筆者は、学習を目的とする海外研修は英語を学ぶ生徒には非常に効果があり、海外研修によって生徒たちはより安心感を持って言語をコミュニケーションツールとして用いることができるようになったとの結論に達した。

Despite their potential in language learning, films have not been covered adequately in academic research except some attempts to develop strategies. One of these strategies has been to compare film scripts and their translations, to identify chunks, technical terms, and creative language examples and to list them with their translations, and to do creative dialogue writing activities especially by modeling these scripts where chunks are used extensively. Believing in the importance of evaluating the film scripts with their translations, this study aims to investigate the processes the researcher/teacher's high school students went through in learning and using the target language starting with the use of the film adaptations of the literary works, writing their scripts modeling the film scripts, acting their own scripts, and shooting their performances. The mixed method research design was used with the triangulation of the qualitative and quantitative data. The 68 high school students' views were investigated with Likert scale (1-5) questionnaire along with their comments about the items.
