Over the last decades, the globalization of the food and agriculture sector has fueled international labor migration to rural areas in Southern Europe. Portugal is no exception to this trend, as the intensification of foreign investment in agriculture combined with a declining and ageing workforce created a demand for flexible immigrant labor. The Eastern European and Asian immigrant workers who answered the industry’s call were confronted with poor working conditions and lacking access to public services. In this article, we zoom in on the governance challenge that the presence of precarious immigrant workers (PIWs) poses to rural municipalities in the south of Portugal. The burgeoning literature on local integration policies mainly focuses on how cities deal with the challenge posed by international labor migration. This article draws on a detailed case study of the municipality of Odemira to argue that more attention needs to be paid to emerging local migration regimes in non-urban localities. By adopting a regime-theoretical approach, we study how power relations between the local government, civil society, and the private sector play out around the question of immigrant reception. Our study suggests that immigration policies in rural localities are increasingly being developed through cooperation and coproduction between public and private actors. First, we demonstrate how the presence of PIWs is perceived as a policy “problem” by each actor. Second, we outline how a governing coalition formed around the shared concern to improve arrival infrastructures, stimulate integration, mediate socio-cultural impact, and accommodate business interests. We conclude by critically questioning the impact that emerging local migration regimes have on the rights and social position of PIWs in rural contexts.

In recent decades, the impact of international migration on world economic and political processes has increased significantly. Today, international labor migration of the population is one of the most important components of modern processes in the world economy, along with the other components, such as capital flow, goods, technologies and information. Globalization of the world economy has led to new trends in the processes associated with the international migration of labor, requiring scientific study. The object of the article is the modern processes of international labor migration. The aim of the work is to identify and analyze the main trends in international labor migration and its economic consequences. The author used the methods of statistical analysis, analysis of domestic and foreign scientific literature, and the data synthesis. The paper examines the main trends in international labor migration such as an increase in the demographic significance of international migration in the demographic development of economically developed countries, an increase in illegal migration, an increase in the composition of migration flows of highly qualified workers and the proportion of women in the number of international migrants. The article analyzes the economic impact of international labor migration on the economies of countries exporting and importing labor resources. The article concludes that migration will increase in the near future due to three reasons: persisting inequality between rich and poor countries, political and ethnic conflicts in a number of regions and the creation of new free trade zones that will facilitate labor mobility. The conclusions and recommendations of this study may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in addressing labor migration issues in Russia and other countries.

This paper examines the impact of international labor migration on foreign bank presence in 30 Asian and Latin American countries. While it is well established that social and economic characteristics of the host economy influence entry by foreign banks, we test whether social and economic linkages between bank-host and bank-origin economies influence foreign bank activity. In particular, we consider whether international migration from bank-host to the bank-origin countries affects foreign bank activity. Panel Tobit models find that international migration promotes foreign bank presence. Banks originating in industrialized nations with large immigrant populations tend to expand into migrant-source developing countries.

I t is a recognized fact that migration is one of the most important and significant conditions for the successful functioning of the labor market. This article discusses issues related not only to simple migration, but also directly with the international migration of labor. In particular, its impact on the labor supply of national economies has been analyzed, including the impact of labor migration on the formation of the domestic labor market and the total labor potential of society and the state. Directions of interrelation of migration of the population in a key of influence on national economies of the States have been allocated and analyzed. This paper, among other things, provides a classification of modern international migration, identifies five main types of such migration. Studies have been carried out on the dependence and further impact of the type of migration on the domestic economies of States and the international economic situation as a whole. As a result, we consider the positive and negative consequences of labor migration and immigration of the population, as well as their further impact on the reorganization of national economies. The study analyzes the aspects of legislative and legal regulation of migration, including the possibility and basis of such processes in the territory of the Russian Federation. The conclusions drawn up in this article allow us to speak about the impossibility of an unambiguous interpretation of the impact of labor migration on the social and economic indicators of States, since at the same time there are both negative and positive criteria that equally have a direct impact on the categories in the development of international labor migration.
