We often hear that certain words or texts are “untranslatable.” At the root of this judgment lies an exaggerated respect for the native language, which must not be altered by contact with other languages. Against this superstition, it is here argued that translation is one of the great movers of change in language, and accomplishes this precisely through the rendering of difficult and unidiomatic texts. At another level, a purported ethics of translation urges that translations should be “foreignizing” rather than domesticating: this too evidences a normative idea of the integrity of the language and culture of the foreign text. Against such defences of purity, a sense of both language and translation as inherently hybrid, and literary language in particular as macaronic, should open to examination the historical individuality of encounters that every translation records. Examples from Western European languages indicate how this hybridity is to be understood.

JAN KARŁOWICZ IN THE LIGHT OF ARCHIWAL MATERIALS: DIALECTOLOGY, ETHNOLINGUISTICS AND THE STUDY OF LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE The book refers to the scientific activity of Jan Karłowicz, and, in particular, to the three areas to which he contributed much of his work: dialectology, ethnolinguistics, and the study of Lithuanian Language and Culture. The material basis includes the researcher’s archival works (files of the Lexicon of Polish Dialects [Słownik gwar polskich], Lexicon of Polish Mythology [Słownik mitologii polskiej] and the Little Lexicon of Lithuanian Mythology [Słowniczek mitologii litewskiej]), found in 2017 in the Scientific Archive of PAN and PAU in Kraków. The objective of this book is to publish these documents and re-analyse the Lexicon of Polish Dialects. For more than a hundred years, i. e. since the time in which the lexicon was finished in 1911, nobody has probably read those manuscripts. One of the reasons for this is the fact that they were catalogued in a wrong manner.

Abstract The aim of this article is to analyse subject expression evaluation of the non-author language, i.e. the author whose thoughts, discoveries, research results or assumptions are relied on in scientific texts in Lithuanian and English languages, elucidate both universal properties of expression evaluation and the specific ones determined by a particular language and culture. Publication texts of education science field of social science area were selected for the research. Expression evaluation of a quoted author was analysed identifying neutral (surname / name and surname, nationality and residence, scientific and professional activity, time, scientific discoveries, activity achievements, family relations) and subjective (logic and emotional evaluation) attributes. It was determined that education science texts of both languages, Lithuanian and English, do not exhibit a variety of quoted author expression. No examples purveying all possible semantic meanings of attributes were found in both languages. Prevalence of neutral attributes of science subjects and similar aspects of usage of some attributes (surname / name and surname, nationality or residence) reveal general citation traditions determined by universal scientific text regularities rather than a particular language or culture. On the other hand, some tendencies were observed characteristic only to the texts of one or another language and reflecting specific evaluation features of science subject. In the articles of native English speakers, scientific discoveries, results of scientific activity of quoted authors are emphasised whereas Lithuanian authors are more liable to highlight scientific or professional activity and time. Moreover, it is essential to mention that every text represents its author‘s personality to some extent. Thus, the choice of the particular means of expression can be determined by personal qualities of an author.

The present study examines the history of the Romanian translations of the Homeric poems, from the perspective of the evolution of Romanian literary language. We start from the premise that any such translation represents a test of virtuosity not only for the particular translator, but also for the respective modern language and culture, therefore we find it interesting to study the manner in which the development of Homeric exegesis and of translation theories parallel the phases of evolution in modern languages. Therefore the analytical framework will include principles, methods and instruments operating in such domains as language history, translation studies, as well as elements borrowed from contrastive-typological grammar, from philology, in the restrictive sense of the concept, from the theory of mentalities, cultural history and others. Our undertaking highlights the fact that the historical evolution of the act of translation is, naturally, marked by the translator’s personality (theoretical and ideological options, as well as linguistic competences, poetic flair), but also by the cultural context of the respective age and space. At least in the case of Romanian culture, it is noteworthy that, on the whole, the most recent version is also the best.

Abstract The dominant axiom of Belarusian historical linguistics holds that the Belarusian literary language was created in the 19th century. According to this perspective, the contemporary Belarusian literary language is a new entity, separate from the old writing tradition. Its supporters therefore sanction the thesis that this writing tradition was broken, despite recent research proving the continuity of the Belarusian language. The present analysis shows that the reproduction of cliches about ‘the breaking of the tradition’ in textbooks used for teaching Belarusian language cause significant cognitive dissonance. Modern conscious Belarusians are building their identity based on the tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, feeling themselves its heirs. The building of a modern identity should, however, incorporate references to language which is an important component of it. The analyzed textbooks contradict this by maintaining that the Belarusian literary language has its roots in the 19th century.

The purpose of the article is to investigate the publishing activities of the Volyn Society, founded by representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora and later created on this basis by the Volyn Research Institute in Winnipeg, Canada. The result of their activities was the publication of a number of scientific works that are valuable sources for the history of Ukrainian culture and art and historical local lore and cultural region. The methodology consists of the application of the historical-chronological approach to the study of issues, as well as analytical, culturological methods in the study of the publication of scientific works of historical and cultural nature by the Institute of Experiments of Volyn. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the expansion and generalization of information about scientific publications of the Institute of Experiments of Volyn as a source base for studying the history and art of Ukrainian culture of the twentieth century. Conclusions. As a result of the research, it was established that the activity of the Violin Research Institute has a unique significance as a center of historical and cultural research of the region of Ukraine outside its mainland, accumulating the intellectual potential of Ukrainian diasporas. At the same time, the existence of such an institution and its scientific activity is a cultural phenomenon, which represents the possibility of multi-vector research on the example of one region, which, at the same time, raises a number of issues in the history of national culture and art. Numerous publications, which contain many archival and factual materials of both local and national importance, serve as a valuable source for research in the field of culture and art.
