The article deals with theoretical grounds of lingvo-pragmatic, functional, structural and semantic methods of research, which are used for analyzing phraseological units (PhU) of the Ukrainian language in media discourse. The verbal representation is the most powerful channel for information dissemination. That is why such important issues as the semantic and functional features of lexical, phraseological units of media discourse remain relevant. The clarification of the main methodological principles of studying the peculiarities of functioning the phraseology in the Ukrainian media discourse is the purpose of the proposed work. The object of research is the lingvo-pragmatic, structural and semantic features of phraseologisms’ functioning in the Ukrainian media discourse. Different types of structural and semantic transformations of phraseological units have been analyzed in the article. The transformed phraseologisms in media discourse demonstrate the dynamics of evaluative, ideological and cultural perception of reality. The realization of the pragmatic possibilities of “contracted” phraseological units happens due to the context or situation, the intentions of the speaker, as well as the linguistic and cultural competence of the communicator. Phraseological units play a special role in the process of communication, the pragmatic value of which lies in the ability to influence the addressee in a particular communicative situation. The phraseologisms of the Ukrainian language perform a variety of functions in the media discourse: nominative, evaluative, emotionally expressive, pragmatic, the function of characterizing the social status of social and political figures etc.

Current problems and controversies involving GM issues are not limited to scientific fields but spill over into the social context. When disagreements enter society via media outlets, social factors such as interests, resources, and values can contribute to complicating discourse about a controversial subject. Using the framework for the analysis of media discourse proposed by Carvalho, this paper examines news reports on Chinese GM rice from the dimensions of both text and context, covering the period of 2001–2015. This study shows that media may not only construct basic concepts, theme, and discursive strategies but also generate an ideological stance. This ideology constituted an influential dimension of the GM rice controversy. By following ideology consistent with the dominant position of the Chinese government, the media selectively constructed and endowed GM rice with a specific meaning in the Chinese social context, making possible the reproduction and communication of GM rice knowledge and risks to the public.

The article deals with peculiarities of the process of training economic journalists in the context of contemporary educational challenges and trends. On the basis of generalization of modern Ukrainian media practices, systematization and interpretation of scientific researches, related to the topic of the article, analysis of educational programs and curricula of institutions of higher education, the authors argue the justification and expediency of the specialization "economic journalism" on the problem-thematic principle. The content of the concept ‘economic journalism’ is defined in terms of functional purposefulness, attention is focused on its expressive analyticity. The tasks of the economic segment of Ukrainian journalism are formulated under conditions of deepening democratization processes and development of civil society. The disadvantages of this segment of media discourse are determined (focus on narrow audience, superficiality and unprofessional performance of the coverage of economic issues, selectivity, fragmentation of the media picture of the economic sphere of social activity, etc.). The topicality of specialized training of economic journalists, in particular – and in combination with other subject areas – is emphasized. Content components of economic journalists training is defined as a combination of actual journalistic and economic blocks of knowledge and the involvement of data on processes in related social sectors. Methodological principles, such as: practical orientation, integration nature, use of interactive teaching methods, design technology; effective forms of organization of the process of training journalists of economic specialization (e.g. master classes, different types of practice); work on complex creative projects (television, radio, press, internet, photo projects, etc.) are formulated.

The objective of the article is to identify specific features of black colour representation in English and Russian media headlines for 2019-2020 at the verbal level of the text. The method of continuous sampling was used to select a number of examples in English and Russian, containing various variations in the functioning of the lexeme “black” in the period from 2019 to 2020. Methods. The research is carried out through the cognitive-discourse analysis of metaphors within the media discourse with the involvement of linguistic, general philological and linguocultural data that contributed to research activities, taking into account the specific features of the social and political realities of the media segments under consideration. The results were interpreted using generalization, descriptive and comparative methods. Conclusions. The analysis of the headlines of the media in this period allows us to assert the frequency and importance of verbalization of black colour in modern media discourse. The English and Russian segments demonstrate various aspects of its functioning. The dominant sphere of realization of black colour is the social context: the formation of groups, protest movements, the fight against prejudices, resonant incidents, tragedies, etc. It seems possible to include the similarity of the transmission of unfavourable states, events or shocks according to the “colour + time” scheme and the fixation of race in colour embodiment to the adjacent black verbalization of black colour. Among the differences, one can single out the total dominance of headlines in relation to race in the English-language media in the context of the struggle for rights and confrontation and the presence in this regard of a strong connection with racism through colour.

This article is devoted to the study of the discursive structures of political texts published on Twitter of the President of the United States. The material of the study was the statements of Donald Trump and Joe Biden during the period from November 1, 2019 to August 31, 2021. Its multimillion audience of subscribers makes Twitter a powerful political tool with the ability to influence public opinion. The purpose of this article is to identify the discursive structures arising in political communication as a result of the actualization of the category of discursive heterogeneity, which includes elements of interdiscursiveness and polydiscursiveness. The authors use various methods: descriptive, contextual analysis, comparative, methods of observation, content analysis and discourse analysis. Using the linguistic concept of the American scientist D. Himes S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G, the analysis of the situation components Setting and scene, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, Genre is carried out. Being a part of the media discourse and demonstrating the features of the Internet genre, the written messages of politicians are laconic, expressive, and tend to economize on linguistic means. The same communicants, depending on the context of utterances, become participants in different types of discourses. The study analyzes the foreign and domestic political discourses, the security discourse, as well as a number of accompanying special discourses that constitute political communication. The choice of the subject matter of the messages is due to the high degree of importance of issues of foreign and domestic policy, as well as stability and security.

The article is devoted to the study of precedent units with the source «ancient Greek mythology», which have the potential to broadcast the linguistic and cultural features of a particular community, the recognition of which influences the success of intercultural communication. The work provides a comprehensive analysis of the precedent units included in the cycle «The History of the Golden Fleece», namely «Argonauts», «Golden Fleece», «Jason» in the texts of Russian-language media. In the article the author argues that the change in the semantics of constructions occurs not only at the denotative, but also at the connotative, pragmatic level, where the studied precedent units acquire new semantic features. The analysis of the functioning features of the precedent units included in the «History of the Golden Fleece» cycle allows us to establish the linguistic mechanisms of their «deployment» in the media discourse and come to the conclusion about the specifics of the fragment of the worldview, fixed in mythologized precedent phenomena.

Nolite te bastardes carborundorum. The handmaid in the media discourse about women’s rightsThe handmaid is the protagonist of a transmedia story begun with Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel about Gilead, a regime in which women are deprived of their rights. The handmaids are a unique group — they are fertile, a rarity in a country plagued by infertility. The women, treated as objects, are allocated as surrogates to childless couples from the most privileged class. The image of the handmaid became popular thanks to a new generation television series produced for the Hulu platform, and subsequently begun to be used in the fight for women’s rights. In the first part of the article the author analyses the handmaids and their place in the dystopian narrative and in the second — the way in which they are used in the social discourse about women’s rights. In this the author focuses on performative campaigns, corporate social responsibility and links between the characters and the #metoo campaign.

The article shows, on the example of discussion about the lowering of the school age, how it can be analysed by means of communication mechanisms distinctive of the social representation theory (anchoring, objectification) and the procedure of media discourse research in what way the media and citizens create social representations concerning socio-political problems, including educational problems. Social representations as a key tool describing the reality give meanings within the frame of the perceived world and join the private and the public reality. The knowledge encompassed in the representations clarifies the reality. The author’s own analysis included press materials published in the on-line versions of Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Wyborcza and the web page Interia in years 2013–2014.

Today, ‘fear’ in its diverse facets is a topic growing in relevance in the media discourse. However, apart from analyses of individual psychic pathologies or general macro-sociological diagnoses, it has been largely neglected in (empirical) social sciences. The increasingly influential works of Bourdieu are no exception here, even though the concept of habitus inherently transcends positive interests such as lifestyle preferences, as analyzed in La Distinction. This becomes explicitly clear in his late works, above all in La Misère du monde, where the dispositions of agents are described in terms of the fears and worries associated with their positions in the social space and societal transformation processes. In this article the authors show that concerns, fear, and worries are constitutive characteristics of the habitus by investigating the structure of ‘fear manifestations’ in relation to the social space. Following Bourdieu’s conception, they construct a model of the Norwegian social space by applying Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) to survey data. They then investigate how questions on fears and concerns are related to the capital structure of the space. The article concludes with a discussion of the findings and a reflection of their implications for a sociology of symbolic domination.

A typology of strategies, tactics and techniques used in the discourse of social advertising is proposed in the article. The relevance of modeling the tools of communicative impact in social advertising is determined by the persuasive nature of the discourse of social communications, as well as the insufficient development of this issue in the scientific literature. The author of the article relies on the studies of linguists who proposed the classification of communicative strategies used in commercial advertising, as well as in the discourse of socio-political newspapers. The material for analysis was the polycode texts of Russian and foreign social advertising (outdoor advertising, social videos, as well as social photo projects posted on Instagram). The result of the study was a model of communicative strategies and tactics that constitute the discourse of social advertising. Since the effect of persuasiveness is achieved, among other things, by using different types of semiotic codes in the advertising text, special attention is paid to the verbal and visual implementation of the selected strategies, tactics and techniques. The author comes to the conclusion that the frustration strategy based on tactics of escalating negative emotions , shocking with facts and negative forecasting is the basis for the discourse of social advertising. Moreover, the main part of the identified strategies and tactics is invariant for the media discourse as a whole.
