Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the salivary IgA (immunoglobulin A) and alpha amylase levels in the unstimulated whole saliva samples of caries-free and caries-active children and correlate it with the caries status and age. Study design: The salivary IgA and amylase was investigated in 100 children in the range of 8–12 years divided in two groups, control group (DMFT and/or deft = 0) and study group (DMFT/deft score ≥5). The salivary IgA was measured using kit based on two-site sandwich enzyme immunoassay principle and amylase was estimated using the vitro amyl slides. Results :The mean salivary IgA and amylase levels in the saliva of the children in the control group was found to be significantly increased (p=.001 and p=.014 respectively) whereas the relationship between salivary IgA and amylase levels in the saliva of the children was found to be insignificant with the age (p=.392 and p=.306 respectively). Conclusions: The results indicated that salivary IgA and amylase levels in saliva increased significantly in caries free children and the level of salivary IgA and alpha amylase has no significant relation with the age of the children.

ABSTRACT Aim Unstimulated whole salivary p53 was assessed in patients suffering from erosive and plaque-like form of oral lichen planus (OLP). Materials and methods Eighteen patients with erosive form, 17 patients suffering from plaque-like form and 38 noninvolvement subjects were enrolled. The unstimulated whole saliva p53 level was assayed by ELISA. Results The mean concentration of salivary p53 was significantly higher in patients with plaque-like form compared to both patients with erosive form and the control group. Conclusion We conclude that plaque like form of OLP is important in view of the potential for malignancy and is not safety form. Clinical significance It seems that all forms of OLP must be considered accurately, should be followed up with biannual examinations, and if possible, assessment of salivary p53 every year. The aim of this two-year cohort study was to investigate salivary microRNAs (miRNAs) that predict periodontitis progression. A total of 120 patients who underwent supportive periodontal therapy were recruited. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected at baseline. Two years later, 44 patients were followed up (median age, 67.1 years) and divided into two groups: progression group (n = 22), with one or more sites with clinical attachment level (CAL) progression (>3 mm compared with baseline) or tooth extraction due to periodontitis progression; and the control group (n = 22), which did not exhibit CAL progression. In the microarray analysis of salivary miRNAs, hsa-miR-5571-5p, hsa-miR-17-3p, hsa-let-7f-5p, hsa-miR-4724-3p, hsa-miR-99a-5p, hsa-miR-200a-3p, hsa-miR-28-5p, hsa-miR-320d, and hsa-miR-31-5p showed fold change values <0.5 or ≥2.0 in the progression group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). On receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, areas under the curves of hsa-miR-5571-5p, hsa-let-7f-5p, hsa-miR-99a-5p, hsa-miR-28-5p, and hsa-miR-320d were >0.7, indicating fair discrimination power. The expressions of salivary hsa-miR-5571-5p, hsa-let-7f-5p, hsa-miR-99a-5p, hsa-miR-28-5p, and hsa-miR-320d were associated with periodontitis progression in patients with chronic periodontitis. These salivary miRNAs may be new biomarkers for progression of periodontitis, and monitoring them may contribute to new diagnostics and precision medicine for periodontitis.

Context: Conflicting results have been reported in the literature concerning the relationship between salivary nitrous oxide concentration and dental caries in children. Metaanalysis studies aim to combine different studies and reduce the difference between the parameters by increasing the number of studies involved in the analysis process. Objectives: Accordingly, this meta-analysis study aimed at determining the relationship between salivary nitrous oxide concentration and dental caries in children. Methods: Databases were searched using the keywords “nitric oxide”, “salivary”, “Caries”, “DMFT Index”, “children”, “early childhood caries” and OR, AND and NOT operators. Quality assessment was then performed based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS) checklist. The standardized mean difference (SMD) of DMFT, dmft, and salivary nitric oxide (NO) concentration was estimated. Results: Seven studies made a comparison between the mean salivary NO concentration in children with dental caries and that in the control group. In four studies, the mean salivary NO concentration in children with dental caries was lower, as compared to that in the control group. This difference was significant in all four studies. Also, the mean standardized difference of the salivary NO index was also estimated to be -0.11 (CI 95%: -1.77, 1.55). Conclusions: This meta-analysis study demonstrated that salivary NO concentration was not significantly related to dental caries. Moreover, since salivary NO concentration is affected by various factors, it is not sufficient to determine the likelihood of the incidence of caries.

Abstract PURPOSECarbonic anhydrase-2 (CA-2) plays a role in mineralization and calcification in organism. Strong evidence suggests that CA-2 is associated with urolithiasis. However, the relationship between CA-2 and urinary stone remains unclear. The study aimed to assess the association of urine CA-2 (uCA-2) level and the potential risk of urinary stone.METHODSFrom March 2017 to November 2019, a prospective cohort study was conducted on patients with urinary stones and healthy subjects to determine the pretreatment uCA-2 level detection by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The difference of uCA-2 level between patients with urinary stones and healthy subjects was compared. Then comparison between stone patients with complications and without complications was carried out as well as correlation analysis to detect factors associated with biomarker expression.RESULTS118 patients with urinary stones were into urinary stones group and 42 healthy subjects were into healthy control group. The mean pretreatment uCA-2 level was significantly higher in patients with urinary stones group than healthy controls group (P=0.028). Furthermore, The uCA-2 level was positive correlation with urinary stones complications (R=0.379, P=0.000), especially pain complications (R=0.524, P=0.000) and hematuria complications (R=0.374, P=0.000). Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis that a uCA-2 level threshold of 10.94 ng/mL had 83.67% sensitivity and 68.12% specificity for predicting urinary stones complications. CONCLUSIONSExcessive uCA-2 excretion is a major risk factor for urinary stone. Our findings suggested that uCA-2 may be used as an unappreciated biomarker for the diagnosis urinary stone in patients and to predict its complications.

Aim-Objectives: Vitiligo is an acquired idiopathic disease which progresses with melanocyte destruction and is clinically characterized by depigmented lesions of unknown etiology. Vitiligo may be coexistence with a autoimmune and endocrine disorders. This study examined the sT3, fT4, TSH, Anti-TPO, Anti-Tg, Vitamin B12 and fasting blood glucose (FBG) values, and thrombocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio(TLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR), the mean platelet volume(MPV) the correlation of depigmented lesions with the extent of body involvement sites(IS). Materials and Method: The study enrolled 67 patients aged 0‒65 who were diagnosed with non-segmental generalized vitiligo and in whom an increase in lesions had been observed in the last six months. The IS of the lesions in the patients were evaluated as IS ˂10%(1st group), 10%‒20% (2nd group), 20% - 30%(3rd group), 30% - 40%(4th group), 40% ‒50 %(5th group), and ˃50%(6th group). The control group consisted of patients who had presented to the outpatient clinic having had no history of vitiligo detected in themselves nor in their families. Results: No significant correlation was found between IS and sT3, fT4, TSH, Anti-TPO, Anti-Tg, Vit. B12, PBG or MPV. A moderately positive correlation was found between IS and duration (p <0.05) and a mildly positive correlation between IS and NLR and TLR (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study show that every patient diagnosed with vitiligo, independent of the IS, should undergo examination for autoimmune disease. A mild positive correlation between VTA and NLO-TLO was found to be an indicator of increased inflammation in vitiligo patients as the extent of lesions increased.

1 The relationship between plasma chlorpropamide concentration and thyroid function was examined in 87 maturity onset diabetic patients receiving chronic therapy. 2 Although plasma chlorpropamide concentration was weakly negatively correlated with serum thyroxine (r= 0.33, P< 0.01) the mean serum thyroxine and thyrotrophin (TSH) were not different from that of a matched control group of diabetics treated with diet alone. 3 Serum thyroxine was negatively correlated with the duration of diabetes in both groups. 4 These results suggest that chlorpropamide does not have a clinically significant antithyroid effect.

This study aimes to evaluate platelet and leucocyte indicators, such as the mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, white blood cell count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in nasopharyngeal cancer patients and also to evaluate the relationship between these indicators and nasopharyngeal cancer with distant metastasis. The medical records of 118 patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in our hospital between January 2006 and August 2015 were reviewed. The nasopharyngeal cancer group was further sub grouped according to the presence or absence of distant metastasis and TNM (tumour – T, node – N, metastasis – M) classification. A control group consisted of 120 healthy patients. The platelet and leucocyte values at the time of the initial diagnosis were recorded. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group. But only platelet distribution width values were significantly higher in the nasopharyngeal cancer group with distant metastasis compared to the nasopharyngeal cancer group without distant metastasis. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet distribution width values may increase in nasopharyngeal cancer. But only the platelet distribution width values may give us an idea about the distant metastasis in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Aim. To study the relationship of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP3) genetic polymorphism and dilated ischemic cardiomyopathy (DCM), as well as idiopathic cardiomyopathy (ICM) of unknown etiology.Material and methods. A total of 221 patients with DCM and ICM were examined (mean age, 55,30±9,69 years). The group of ischemic DCM consisted of 111 people (99 men (89,2%) and 12 women (10,8%)). The mean age of DCM subjects was 51,73±9,74 years (male subgroup, 51,00±8,96 years; female subgroup, 57,75±3,71 years). The ICM group consisted of 110 people (100 men (91,5%) and 10 women (8.5%)). The mean age of ICM subjects was 58,68±8.38 years (male subgroup, 58,29±8.,6 years; female subgroup, 62,90±6,29 years). The control group of subjects (n=121) consisted of healthy people without cardiovascular diseases (mean age, 53,6±4,8 years). All patients of the experimental group underwent routine diagnostic tests, as well as coronary angiography. In case of suspected myocarditis, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed. All patients underwent polymerase chain reaction to determine the MMP3-11715A/6A polymorphism (rs35068180).Results. In patients with cardiomyopathy, regardless of the disease origin, significant differences were verified in comparison with the control group. Allele 6A (65,8% vs 59,3%, p=0,044) and genotype 6A/6A (42,1% vs 32,6%, p=0,099) were found significantly more frequently in patients with cardiomyopathy than in the control group. In addition, despite various etiological factors, the pathogenetic involvement of MMP3 is likely to have a general direction.Conclusion. In all patients with cardiomyopathy, the prevalence of MMP3 gene A allele was shown. Due to decrease in the transcription activity in homozygous 6A allele, the stromelysin level in arterial walls also decreases. This promotes the activation of procollagenase-1, the deposition of extracellular matrix and cardiac remodeling
