October 12, 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Head of the Department of Medical Protection, Head of the Department of Armed Defeat and Protection of the Medical Academy, the Great Patriotic War, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and Colonel of the Medical Service, Ravil Garifovich Imangulov. For many years, R.G. Imangulov fruitfully worked in the field of military medical science and gone through all formational stages of a scientist and a teacher from an adjunct to the head of the department and professor-consultant of the Academic Council of the Military Medical Academy. During his service at the Military Medical Academy, Professor R.G. Imangulov took an active part in testing weapons of mass destruction and special field experimental studies in various regions of the country, aimed at the practical implementation of the latest achievements in the field of medical and technical means of anti-chemical and anti-radiation protection. For a long time, under his leadership and with his direct participation, fundamental research was carried out on the fundamentals of medical protection of troops and population from mass destruction weapons. His achievements in the field of medical protection against mass destruction weapons, both educational and scientific and practical disciplines, are of great importance for Russian military medicine. His fruitful years of activity did not only result in monographs, textbooks, teaching aids, scientific reports, and articles, but also the adaptation of official normative documents for the military personnel protection from mass destruction weapons, technical and medical means of individual, and collective protection.

The content of this article was presented in the form of a report at the International Military-Technical Forum Army-2021 and are devoted to the formation and the present day of the system of organizing scientific work in medicine. It is shown how medicine formed the attributes of science with a system of state scientific attestation, certain forms of scientific work and the system of establishing its organizational foundations with the formulation of tasks by control units for the development of specific directions in the interests of military medicine. The role in this paper of the scientific department of the Military Medical Academy and a brief outline of its history are described. Significant attention is paid to the current state of scientific work, its forms and types, the peculiarities of their functioning in modern conditions, as well as development prospects. Modern scientific ties, relationships with the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Military Innovative Technopolis Era and other ties with the crucial partners have been demonstrated. The specifications of the system of training scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel are given, starting with the system of the military scientific society of cadets and listeners to the election of members of the RAS. The role of military medical science in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is shown, as well as the prospects for the development of scientific practices of the Military Medical Academy (4 figs, bibliography: 6 refs).

The purpose of this publication is to comprehensively and fully disclose the contribution of the scientist bibliographer Natalya Nikolaevna Kholodkovskaya to the work of the bibliographic department of the fundamental library of the Military Medical Academy. The preparation of the materials for this article is timed to coincide with two significant dates: in 2021, the bibliography department of the library of the Military Medical Academy will celebrate 90 years and the 130th anniversary of the birth of N.N. Kholodkovskaya. The article is devoted to the pages of the biography of N.N. Kholodkovskaya, her professional development and major achievements in the field of bibliographic activity. In the choice of the profession of Natalya Nikolaevna, the influence of her father, the famous professor, the outstanding zoologist and the original lyric poet Nikolai Aleksandrovich Kholodkovsky, can be traced. For 45 years from 1921 to 1966 N.N. Kholodkovskaya worked in the fundamental library of the academy, in different years she held the positions of a scientific bibliographer, head of the department, and from December 2, 1938 to September 1939, she headed the library. With the name of N.N. Kholodkovskaya connected the creation of the bibliography department, the first head of which she became. During the Great Patriotic War N.N. Kholodkovskaya was in besieged Leningrad and helped preserve the richest library fund. The main directions of the work of the bibliography department under the leadership of N.N. Kholodkovskaya were: preparation of bibliographic lists of literature, execution of written or oral address, clarifying, factual information on various topics; deep bibliographic development of large planning topics; development of the reference and bibliographic apparatus, replenishment of the auxiliary reference fund; preparation of written and oral translations, preparation of abstracts of articles on military medicine from foreign journals and books. The translations were regularly published in the Military Medical Journal. N.N. Kholodkovskaya compiled a number of valuable indexes that have not lost their significance. Among them: Bibliographic index of Russian literature on military medicine, Materials for the history of the Military Medical Order of Lenin of the Academy S.M. Kirov, The effect of penetrating radiation on the body, Sleep therapy and others. The current profile bibliographic information of the structural divisions of the Academy and individual specialists was at a high level in accordance with their scientific and educational needs and requests. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that this is the first attempt at scientific understanding of the work of the bibliography department of the library of the Military Medical Academy, in attracting previously unpublished documents, memoirs of contemporaries. As a result of the preparation of the publication, materials were found and analyzed that give a more complete picture of the personality and professional merits of N.N. Kholodkovskaya; about its role in the creation and development of the bibliography department, in the confirmation of the principles and methods of bibliographic work, which are adhered to in the department to this day (17 figs, bibliography: 26 refs).

The main stages of labor, scientific, pedagogical, and social activities of a participant in the Great Patriotic War, laureate of the State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, honored worker of the higher school of the Russian Federation, doctor of medical sciences, professor, major general of the medical service, Nikolai Vasilyevich Savateeva, are considered. Biographical materials are presented on the formation of N.V. Savateev as an outstanding scientist and teacher, founder of the Department of Toxicology and Medical Protection at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. Main areas of scientific research personally carried out by Nikolai Vasilyevich, as well as groups that he led for many years, are covered. His interests included fundamental studies of the role of acetylcholine in the higher nervous activity function, mechanisms of toxic action of organophosphorus compounds and other neurotoxicants, and the search for antidote therapy for these compound poisoning. In 1967, he was awarded a State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for developing and creating antidotes for organophosphorus toxic substances. Nikolai Vasilievich made a significant contribution to the military toxicology and medical protection formation as a training discipline and branch of military medical science. He was one of the first scientists worldwide to begin the study of biomedical consequences of chemical accidents and problems of environmental toxicology. In subsequent years, Nikolai Vasilievich was one of the initiators to develop the disaster medicine problem. The most important place in the activities of N.V. Savateev was occupied by training scientific and pedagogical personnel, who continued the work of their teacher; many of them became well-known toxicologists in our country and abroad.

Some aspects of the state of the Imperial Military Medical Academy before the beginning of the First World War, the activities of the Academy to train military doctors for the army during the war before the events of October 1917 are presented. The imperialist development path introduced Russia at the beginning of the 20th century in a complex knot both external and internal political and economic contradictions, that influenced the activities of the academy. The sad experience of the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 demanded an introduction to the educational process of military and military-medical disciplines. Since 1907, the Main Military Medical Directorate has proposed the introduction of compulsory study by students of the Academy of military regulations, military administration, military field surgery with radiology and field surgery, military hygiene, the theory of searchable diseases and epidemics, «military medical service» according to the programs approved by the military minister. Despite the fact that such «militarization» during the period of ongoing military reforms was acutely perceived by both students and the Conference, referring to the overload of curricula, the requirements of the time created prerequisites for further development in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries scientific schools. Outstanding global discoveries in the field of medicine by the beginning of the First World War allowed the Academy to preserve the status of the main scientific center of medicine, and not only the military, Russian Empire. On the eve of the First World War, Russian military medicine accumulated a wealth of experience both in organizing medical care at the front and in evacuating the wounded and sick and in matters relating to the theoretical justification and practice of treating wounds and diseases. The frontline experience of introducing the latest methods and advanced technologies for treating the wounded, contributing to the further development of military medicine, was noted.

The data on the experience of creating the first specialized departments for the treatment of victims of thermal injury in the Soviet Union are presented. Outstanding representatives of military medicine took an active position in this process: I.I. Dzhanelidze, S.S. Girgolav, I.S. Kolesnikov, B.N. Postnikov, T.Ya. Ariev, etc. The topic of their scientific research and publications, as well as of colleagues from various research and medical institutions in our country, indicates that burns and frostbite were a very urgent scientific problem for scientists of that time. However, due to objective reasons, the studies were carried out separately, were often aimed at solving particular problems, and had no confirmation in a clinical setting. The situation changed radically after the creation in 1960 at the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov Department of Thermal Injuries with a clinic for 100 beds. Its first boss was T.Ya. Ariev. A highly qualified scientist, a comprehensively trained surgeon, a teacher with extensive work experience, an experienced methodologist was able to form a team of like-minded people in a short time. Under his leadership and with his direct participation, the department began to solve a wide range of urgent scientific problems associated with thermal injury. This is evidenced by the list of topics and titles of publications that were found in the fundamental library of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov. A careful attitude to the publications of that time is of great educational value for the student cadets, trainees, students and all employees of the academy. Thus, we preserve the memory of those representatives of military medicine who created the history and glory of our academy.

The work presents little-known facts of the service of Professor T.Ya. Arieva in the post of the head of theDepartment of Military Surgery of the Military Medical Faculty S.M. Kirov at the Saratov Medical Institute in the period1951-1958. Arriving to a new duty station as a member of the staff of teachers from the Military Medical Academy, hesupported the command of the faculty of medical institute in a short time was able to staff the cathedral team and begin thecurrent work. Possessing significant personal scientific and pedagogical experience and the technique of performing complexsurgical interventions, he was able to effectively organize on a scientifically grounded principles the methodology of teachingdiscipline on the basis of a city clinical hospital. In his work he successfully used the rational distribution of study time, theoptimal schedule of the day of medical and nursing staff. As the head of the department T.Ya. Aryev paid much attentionto the professional growth of the teaching staff, regularly summarized in the press the accumulated experience, shared anddiscussed with colleagues promising ways to improve the pedagogical process. Scientific and clinical work complementedeach other, allowed not only to find answers to urgent questions and problems of medical science, improve the effectivenessof treatment of patients, but also to identify the most gifted listeners and teachers of the department. Such students are T.Ya.Aryev, as M.I. Lytkin and N.E. Povstyanoy, working under his leadership, became later known physicians and scientists, headsof surgical departments in large universities, created their own scientific schools. Service in Saratov allowed to accumulateT. I Aryev considerable experience in the management of the surgical department. It was this factor, combined with personalqualities, that enabled him to lead the first in our country chair of thermal defeats of the Military Medical Academy S.M.Kirov. Under his leadership, the team created a well-known clinic not only in our country but also abroad, a large scientificand educational center, which became a real school of professional skill for a large number of specialists.

The article is devoted to the 150th anniversary of the outstanding russian physician, scientist and health care organizer Sergey Petrovich Fedorov (1869–1936). As head of the department of hospital surgery at the Military Medical Academy from 1903 to 1936, S.P. Fedorov made an invaluable contribution to many areas of surgery, and especially to urology. For the first time in Russia, S.P. Fedorov performed cystoscopy with ureteral catheterization and proposed a method for determining a separate kidney function – an indigo carmine test. Also he was the first in our country who performed a suprapubic adenomectomy. On top of that he developed a renal clamp bearing his name. In 1907, in St. Petersburg, the first urological society in Russia was established on the initiative of Fedorov. In 1923, on his initiative, the publication of the journal Urology was launched. These and other achievements of S.P. Fedorov forever immortalized his name among the most prominent representatives of the medical science of our country. In 1907, on the initiative of S.P. Hero of the Soviet Union Efim Anatolyevich Dyskin - a prominent domestic scientist and teacher of higher education, head of the department of normal anatomy (1968-1988), Honorary Doctor of the Military Medical Academynamed after S.M. Kirov, major general of the medical service. Professor E.A. Dyskin is the founder of the new scientific direction Anatomy and Military Medicine. At the age of eighteen E.A. Dyskin volunteered for the front, participated in battles to defend Moscow. On November 16, 1941, he accomplished a heroic feat, for which he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. However, after a serious wound, the Red Army soldier Dyskin survived, was treated in hospitals for about a year, at the same time he graduated from the feldsher school, from 1942 to 1947 studied at the Military Medical Academy. After graduating from the Academy from 1948 to 1968 E.A. Dyskin worked under the direction of Professor A.N. Maksimenkov a at the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, where he went from an adjunct to a professor. In 1968 he was appointed as a head of the Department of Normal Anatomy, which he directed for 20 years.He created a scientific anatomical school that developed pecularities on the morphology of various types of gunshot wounds and the effects of extreme factors of military labor on the human body. Under his leadership, research was also conducted to study the state of collateral circulation, the functional anatomy of the digestive system, craniology, and the history of military medicine. Scientific ideas of Professor E.A. Dyskin continues to develop in the writings of students and followers at the Department of Normal Anatomy, and neuromorphology - at the Department of Nervous Diseases of Military Medical Academy.

Background. Vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap is commonly used in the reconstruction of composite bony and soft tissue defects of the lower third of the face due to the outstanding quality of its cutaneous component. The aim was to evaluate the primary and overall success in the reconstruction of mandibular defects, following war injuries, with vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Methods. At the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Military Medical Academy Belgrade, there were eight patients with this kind of defect following war injury, and the mandible was reconstructed with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Bony compartment of the graft was harvested as up to 11 cm long segment of radial circumference. Results. The localization and structure of the defect, features of a harvested compound graft, the procedure of the reestablishment of the mandibular continuity was presented as well as immediate and late complications during the consolidation period, and the primary successful reconstruction in 87.5% of the patients. Conclusion. The primary and overall success in the mandibular defects reconstruction with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap was equal or even better than those presented in the literature on the reconstruction of the similar defects after tumor resections.
