The main stages of labor, scientific, pedagogical, and social activities of a participant in the Great Patriotic War, laureate of the State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, honored worker of the higher school of the Russian Federation, doctor of medical sciences, professor, major general of the medical service, Nikolai Vasilyevich Savateeva, are considered. Biographical materials are presented on the formation of N.V. Savateev as an outstanding scientist and teacher, founder of the Department of Toxicology and Medical Protection at the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. Main areas of scientific research personally carried out by Nikolai Vasilyevich, as well as groups that he led for many years, are covered. His interests included fundamental studies of the role of acetylcholine in the higher nervous activity function, mechanisms of toxic action of organophosphorus compounds and other neurotoxicants, and the search for antidote therapy for these compound poisoning. In 1967, he was awarded a State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics for developing and creating antidotes for organophosphorus toxic substances. Nikolai Vasilievich made a significant contribution to the military toxicology and medical protection formation as a training discipline and branch of military medical science. He was one of the first scientists worldwide to begin the study of biomedical consequences of chemical accidents and problems of environmental toxicology. In subsequent years, Nikolai Vasilievich was one of the initiators to develop the disaster medicine problem. The most important place in the activities of N.V. Savateev was occupied by training scientific and pedagogical personnel, who continued the work of their teacher; many of them became well-known toxicologists in our country and abroad.

October 12, 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Head of the Department of Medical Protection, Head of the Department of Armed Defeat and Protection of the Medical Academy, the Great Patriotic War, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and Colonel of the Medical Service, Ravil Garifovich Imangulov. For many years, R.G. Imangulov fruitfully worked in the field of military medical science and gone through all formational stages of a scientist and a teacher from an adjunct to the head of the department and professor-consultant of the Academic Council of the Military Medical Academy. During his service at the Military Medical Academy, Professor R.G. Imangulov took an active part in testing weapons of mass destruction and special field experimental studies in various regions of the country, aimed at the practical implementation of the latest achievements in the field of medical and technical means of anti-chemical and anti-radiation protection. For a long time, under his leadership and with his direct participation, fundamental research was carried out on the fundamentals of medical protection of troops and population from mass destruction weapons. His achievements in the field of medical protection against mass destruction weapons, both educational and scientific and practical disciplines, are of great importance for Russian military medicine. His fruitful years of activity did not only result in monographs, textbooks, teaching aids, scientific reports, and articles, but also the adaptation of official normative documents for the military personnel protection from mass destruction weapons, technical and medical means of individual, and collective protection.

The content of this article was presented in the form of a report at the International Military-Technical Forum Army-2021 and are devoted to the formation and the present day of the system of organizing scientific work in medicine. It is shown how medicine formed the attributes of science with a system of state scientific attestation, certain forms of scientific work and the system of establishing its organizational foundations with the formulation of tasks by control units for the development of specific directions in the interests of military medicine. The role in this paper of the scientific department of the Military Medical Academy and a brief outline of its history are described. Significant attention is paid to the current state of scientific work, its forms and types, the peculiarities of their functioning in modern conditions, as well as development prospects. Modern scientific ties, relationships with the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Military Innovative Technopolis Era and other ties with the crucial partners have been demonstrated. The specifications of the system of training scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel are given, starting with the system of the military scientific society of cadets and listeners to the election of members of the RAS. The role of military medical science in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is shown, as well as the prospects for the development of scientific practices of the Military Medical Academy (4 figs, bibliography: 6 refs).

The main milestones of the life path, creative, clinical, scientific and pedagogical activity of Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of the State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Honored Scientist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Honorary Doctor of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov Professor Major General Medical Service Veniamin Vasilyevich Volkov are presented. His fundamental research in such sections of ophthalmology as the organization of specialized assistance in the Armed Forces, ophthalmotraumatology, combined lesions and burns of the eyes, vitreoretinal pathology, glaucoma, ophthalmoncology, visual organ physiology, lacrimation pathology, development and introduction of lasers into ophthalmological practice, made him one of the most authoritative specialists in domestic and world ophthalmology. In 1967, V.V. Volkov headed the Department of Ophthalmology, which he led 22 years before his dismissal from the Armed Forces on September 20, 1989. His multifaceted educational, medical and scientific activities were awarded numerous awards and titles. Employees of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov are proud that they are students of the school of Professor V.V. Volkov, and the teachers of the older generation were lucky to work together with a scientist who made a significant contribution to the development of Soviet and Russian ophthalmology, whose works received widespread world recognition. Professor V.V. Volkov is a scientist who formed the scientific school of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Military Medical Academy named after S.M. Kirov in its modern form. Therefore, in 2019, the department was named after him.

The work presents little-known facts of the service of Professor T.Ya. Arieva in the post of the head of theDepartment of Military Surgery of the Military Medical Faculty S.M. Kirov at the Saratov Medical Institute in the period1951-1958. Arriving to a new duty station as a member of the staff of teachers from the Military Medical Academy, hesupported the command of the faculty of medical institute in a short time was able to staff the cathedral team and begin thecurrent work. Possessing significant personal scientific and pedagogical experience and the technique of performing complexsurgical interventions, he was able to effectively organize on a scientifically grounded principles the methodology of teachingdiscipline on the basis of a city clinical hospital. In his work he successfully used the rational distribution of study time, theoptimal schedule of the day of medical and nursing staff. As the head of the department T.Ya. Aryev paid much attentionto the professional growth of the teaching staff, regularly summarized in the press the accumulated experience, shared anddiscussed with colleagues promising ways to improve the pedagogical process. Scientific and clinical work complementedeach other, allowed not only to find answers to urgent questions and problems of medical science, improve the effectivenessof treatment of patients, but also to identify the most gifted listeners and teachers of the department. Such students are T.Ya.Aryev, as M.I. Lytkin and N.E. Povstyanoy, working under his leadership, became later known physicians and scientists, headsof surgical departments in large universities, created their own scientific schools. Service in Saratov allowed to accumulateT. I Aryev considerable experience in the management of the surgical department. It was this factor, combined with personalqualities, that enabled him to lead the first in our country chair of thermal defeats of the Military Medical Academy S.M.Kirov. Under his leadership, the team created a well-known clinic not only in our country but also abroad, a large scientificand educational center, which became a real school of professional skill for a large number of specialists.

June 23, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of prominent Russian transfusiologist, professor, student of academic V.N. Shamov, participant of the Stalingrad Battle Semyon Vavilovich Ryzhkov (1919-2004). He was the one who established the Russian Ministry of Defense Blood Service. In 1961, he founded the Research Laboratory of Fibrinolysis Blood and Tissue Preservation, which since 1964 bears the name of the Blood and Tissue Center. He had been the head of the Center for20 years. His academic interests covered such issues as the use of hemodialysis in acute renal failure, the cryopreservation of red blood cells and bone marrow, which brought him the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics State Prize in 1978, the substantiation of the safety of a 400 ml blood donation, and the use of donor hardware plasmacytopheresis. The article presents data on the contribution of the scientists of the Military Medical Academy to the development of the national blood transfusion service from the 2nd half of the XIX century till the establishment of the Ministry of Defense Blood Service in 1965. June 21, 1919V.N. Shamov, N.N. Elansky, and I.R. Petrov carried out the first donor and recipient matching blood transfusion in Russia. They contributed a lot to teaching medical practitioners to do blood type tests. In 1926, N.N.Yelansky was the first in Russia to publish the study Blood Transfusion. In 1944, V.N.Shamov was the first in Russia to publish The Blood Transfusion Manual for Military Doctors. On the battlefields of Lake Hassan, the Khalkhin Gol River, and in Spain, the surgeons of the Military Medical Academy proved the universal type 0 blood transfusion to be a successful technique. The opinions of scientists on blood donation and preservation, indications and contraindications to blood transfusion in peacetime and wartime are presented.

The article is devoted to the 150th anniversary of the outstanding russian physician, scientist and health care organizer Sergey Petrovich Fedorov (1869–1936). As head of the department of hospital surgery at the Military Medical Academy from 1903 to 1936, S.P. Fedorov made an invaluable contribution to many areas of surgery, and especially to urology. For the first time in Russia, S.P. Fedorov performed cystoscopy with ureteral catheterization and proposed a method for determining a separate kidney function – an indigo carmine test. Also he was the first in our country who performed a suprapubic adenomectomy. On top of that he developed a renal clamp bearing his name. In 1907, in St. Petersburg, the first urological society in Russia was established on the initiative of Fedorov. In 1923, on his initiative, the publication of the journal Urology was launched. These and other achievements of S.P. Fedorov forever immortalized his name among the most prominent representatives of the medical science of our country. In 1907, on the initiative of S.P. Background. Vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap is commonly used in the reconstruction of composite bony and soft tissue defects of the lower third of the face due to the outstanding quality of its cutaneous component. The aim was to evaluate the primary and overall success in the reconstruction of mandibular defects, following war injuries, with vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Methods. At the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Military Medical Academy Belgrade, there were eight patients with this kind of defect following war injury, and the mandible was reconstructed with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap. Bony compartment of the graft was harvested as up to 11 cm long segment of radial circumference. Results. The localization and structure of the defect, features of a harvested compound graft, the procedure of the reestablishment of the mandibular continuity was presented as well as immediate and late complications during the consolidation period, and the primary successful reconstruction in 87.5% of the patients. Conclusion. The primary and overall success in the mandibular defects reconstruction with a vascularized osteoseptocutaneous radial flap was equal or even better than those presented in the literature on the reconstruction of the similar defects after tumor resections.

In February 2020, the Bulgarian government established the National Operational Headquarters for Combating the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bulgaria. General Ventsislav Mutafchiyski, a military doctor, professor at the Military Medical Academy in Sofia, was appointed as its chairman. This paper presents a case study on the public image of Ventsislav Mutafchiyski, its readings and interpretations by the audience, and the specific fan culture that emerged around his media persona during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bulgaria. Placed in the spotlight of the media at the very beginning of the crisis, Mutafchiyski became extremely popular as the public figure most strongly associated with the fight against the spread of the disease in the country. Around his media persona, shaped in the public imagination as a wartime leader, a fan culture has grown with all its characteristic features and dimensions: fans and anti-fans, affirmative and transformative fandom. As a fictional character, Mutafchiyski has appeared in numerous forms of vernacular creativity: poems, songs, material objects, jokes, fake news, conspiracy theories, and memes. In this way, the General has become the main character of Bulgarian pandemic folklore and the focal point of a participatory pandemic.
