BACKGROUND: Systemic therapy with terbinafine (Exifin) forms the basis of any treatment programs for onychomycosis of the feet of dermatomycete etiology. At the same time, the available literature presents relatively little data on the efficacy and safety of systemic terbinafine drugs for individual age groups; and there are practically no such studies based on a large statistical sample with a simultaneous assessment of the dynamics of the quality of life indicator. AIMS: To study the use of the drug Exifin tablets in certain age groups of patients with mycosis and onychomycosis in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a multicenter observational (non-interventional) study involving 1602 patients with varying degrees of severity of onychomycosis of the feet/hands. The patients were divided into 4 age groups, each of which was divided into subgroups according to the severity of onychomycosis, from very mild to extremely severe. The positive dynamics of regression of symptoms, improvement of the quality of life according to the survey scale, the presence or absence of significant adverse reactions were evaluated. RESULTS: In all 1602 patients, positive dynamics from the skin process was obtained in the form of regression of onychomycosis symptoms. The best results on the speed of nail sanitization were obtained in more young age groups with a mild degree of onychomycosis. The lowest rate of regrowth of a healthy nail plate was observed in the age groups 4560 years and over 60 years. In the same age groups, the greatest number of persistent onychodystrophy remained after the eradication of the fungus. In all age groups, there was a positive trend in the quality of life: at the end of treatment, 67% of patients rated the quality of life as excellent and good, and another 24.1% ― satisfactory. No adverse events were recorded in any clinical case. CONCLUSION: Systemic therapy with terbinafine in onychomycosis of the feet/hands is a highly effective component in the combination treatment, allowing to achieve eradication of the fungus in 8590% of cases.

Background Support groups help their participants to cope with the emotional and practical impact of their illnesses. Methods The effectiveness of the Leukemia Society of America support groups in enhancing the quality of life for their participants is reviewed. The groundwork, purpose, and structure of such groups, as well as alternate sources of support, are presented. Evaluation and future directions for oncology groupwork are discussed. Results Support groups complement the therapies provided by clinical practitioners and scientists by addressing the additional needs of cancer patients over the course of illness and survival. Conclusions New concepts and methods that address the needs of specific age-groups and incorporate the newly generated data on cancer treatments will further enhance the benefits provided by support groups.

The aim of the study was to assess the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of elderly in care homes, one of Romania’s most vulnerable social categories, to correlate it to sociodemographic, oral health parameters, and prosthodontic status. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was performed on 58 geriatrics divided into 3 age groups, who were clinically examined and answered the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. Very high rates of complete edentulism in the oldest-old subgroup (bimaxillary in 64.3%; mandibular in 64.3%; maxillary in 85.7%), and alarming frequencies in the other subgroups (middle-old and youngest-old), statistically significant differences between age groups being determined. The OHIP-14 mean score was 14.5. Although not statistically significant, females had higher OHIP-14 scores, also middle-old with single maxillary arch, single mandibular arch, and bimaxillary complete edentulism, whether they wore dentures or not, but especially those without dental prosthetic treatment in the maxilla. A worse OHRQoL was also observed in wearers of bimaxillary complete dentures, in correlation with periodontal disease-related edentulism, in those with tertiary education degree, and those who came from rural areas. There were no statistically significant correlations of OHRQoL with age, total number of edentulous spaces or edentulous spaces with no prosthetic treatment. In conclusion, despite poor oral health and prosthetic status of the institutionalized elderly around Bucharest, the impact on their wellbeing is comparatively moderate.

BACKGROUND: The health-related quality of life construct (QoL) implies a relationship with eating habits (EA) and physical activity (PA). Sociodemographic and anthropometric variables (gender, age and Body Mass Index - BMI) are highlighted in the definition of healthy lifestyle habits promotion strategies. OBJECTIVE: We aim to characterize and relate PA, EA and QoL in children/youth and explore gender, age and BMI influences. METHODS: It is a non-experimental study, with 337 children/youth, ages between 8 and 17 years (12.61±2.96), mostly from the rural inland of Portugal. In data collection we used a sociodemographic and anthropometric questionnaire, a weekly register table of EA and Kid-Kindl (QoL). Statistical analysis (p <  0.05) were performed in SPSS-IBM 25. RESULTS: Lower BMI was associated with better EA (p <  0.001), PA (p <  0.05) and self-esteem (p <  0.01) and worse scores on family subscale of QoL. Female showed higher fruit intake (p <  0.05). The older has shown better results. PA is positively correlated with QoL (p <  0.01) and EA (p <  0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is important to explore other relevant social and family dimensions, to promote intervention programs with parents, school and community, as well as healthy practices policies. The intervention in these age groups is critical for a longer-term impact in improving healthy life habits.

Quality of life (QoL) is an important parameter that affects the choice of therapy. Assessment of QoL and satisfaction with therapy using the rtCGM in children with T1D aged < 7 years was conducted. The study group consisted of 38 children with T1D aged < 7 years (34% aged 2–4, 66% aged 5–7 years), HbA1c: 6.53 ± 0.63%, duration of diabetes: 2.6 ± 1.6 years, treated with an rtCGM-augmented insulin pump for 1.92 ± 1.15 years. Two anonymous surveys were conducted: a. PedsQL3.0 diabetes standardized questionnaire—QoL assessment among age groups: 2–4/5–7 years. b. An original survey assessing the CGM use satisfaction. The mean scores in PedsQL3.0: communication 75%, worries 30%, treatment 70%, and problems associated with diabetes 65%. The QoL scale is: 0–19% very low, 20–39% low, 40–59% moderate, 60–79% high, 80–100% very high. The most frequently reported concerns were long-term diabetes complications and prick pain. Satisfaction with CGM use was high (68% in group aged 5–7 and 92% 2–4 years). Twenty-seven (71%) caregivers confirmed the positive effect of CGM on sleep. During the use of rtCGM a high quality of life was reported, and the quality of sleep in their caregivers was increased.

CASP-12 (Control, Autonomy, Self-realization, and Pleasure scale) is one of the most common internationally used measures for quality of life in older adults, although its structure is not clearly established. Current research aims to test the factor structure of the CASP-12, so as to provide evidence on reliability and external validity, and to test for measurement invariance across age groups. Data from 61,355 Europeans (≥60 years old) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe wave 7 were used. CASP-12, EURO-D (European depression scale), self-perceived health, and life satisfaction measurements were included. Reliability and validity coefficients, competing confirmatory factor models, and standard measurement invariance routine were estimated. A second-order factor model with the original factor structure was retained. The scale showed adequate reliability coefficients except for the autonomy dimension. The correlation coefficients for external validity were all statistically significant. Finally, CASP-12 is scalar invariant across age. We conclude that the best-fitting factor structure retained allows using CASP-12 either by factors, or as an overall score, depending on the research interests. Findings related to CASP-12 measurement invariance encourage its use in the oldest-old too. When comparing the dimensions across age groups, as people age, autonomy slightly increases and the rest of the dimensions decline.

Introduction. The structure of cancer incidence inchildren has its own characteristics. The majority of tumorsthat appear in childhood are of embryonic origin. Malignantneoplasms (MN) remain one of the most serious diseases ofchildhood. At present, it is obvious that it is impossible totake measures aimed at reducing morbidity and mortalityfrom MN and to improve the quality of life of cancerpatients without proper accounting and registration of thispatients’ group. The structure of oncopathology in childrenof different age groups of Vinnitsia region is given. The purpose of the study is to provide medical andstatistical assessment of malignant neoplasms in children ofVinnitsia region and to highlight the experience of treatmentof a newborn with giant teratoblastoma of external-internallocalization and teratoma of internal localization.Results. The profile of malignant neoplasms in childrenof Vinnitsia region has been presented and the clinical caseof giant teratoblastoma of external-internal localizationand teratoma of internal localization has been described.Conclusions. The most informative diagnostic methodis computed tomography with contrast enhancement, whichallows you to clearly determine the topographic location ofthe tumor and its relationship to the surrounding anatomicalstructures, considering the complexity of the anatomicallocation of sacrococcygeal teratoblastoma (SCT). Earlysurgical treatment of SCT, namely removal of the tumorwith the coccyx, is the only correct and justified treatmenttactic.

The aim of the study was to examine the use of video-based communication and its association with loneliness, mental health and quality of life in older adults (60-69 years versus 70+ years) during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Norway, UK, USA and Australia during April/May 2020, and 836 participants in the relevant age groups were included in the analysis. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between use of video-based communication tools and loneliness, mental health and quality of life within age groups, while adjusting by sociodemographic variables. Video-based communication tools were found to be more often used among participants aged 60-69 years (60.1%), compared to participants aged 70 or above (51.8%, p < 0.05). Adjusting for all variables, use of video-based communication was associated with less loneliness (β = -0.12, p < 0.01) and higher quality of life (β = 0.14, p < 0.01) among participants aged 60-69 years, while no associations occurred for participants in the oldest age group. The use of video-based communication tools was therefore associated with favorable psychological outcomes among participants in their sixties, but not among participants in the oldest age group. The study results support the notion that age may influence the association between use of video-based communication tools and psychological outcomes amongst older people.
