Objective. Some viral infections can have a harmful effect on the functioning of the nervous system and can even cause serious neurological damage. This work aims to review the results of studies published so far concerning neurological complications in people infected with coronaviruses, especially SARS-CoV-2, and possible mechanisms responsible for nervous system damage. Literature review. Recently, there have been reports that coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), cause acute respiratory disease, exhibit neurotropic properties and can also cause neurological symptoms. There are studies published showing that these viruses may penetrate to the brain and cerebrospinal fluid. Conclusions. Coronaviruses are still poorly understood, so it seems important to study the potential impact of SARS-CoV-2 infections on the nervous system. It seems appropriate that patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 should be early evaluated for neurological symptoms, including headache and impaired consciousness.

That pain relief in childbirth is generally necessary, or at least highly desirable, there can be no two opinions on this score. If in strong people it was not always possible to ascertain the noticeably harmful effect of labor pains on the nervous system, then in sensitive, nervous, weak women - and in our time there are most of them - prolonged painful childbirth quite often causes a state of nervous exhaustion, accompanied, according to the works of Krnig'a and Criel'ya (1922), deep and severe changes in the most important tissues of the animal organism.

Acute lethal anaphylaxis in the intact rabbit is caused by a failure of the heart. This failure of the heart is due to a change in the heart itself; it is peripheral and independent of the central nervous system for its production. This change in the heart is shown anatomically and functionally by decreased translucency, change in consistency, and by failure to respond to stimuli, and is probably to be classed as a chemical rigor. The rigor of the heart is most pronounced in the right ventricle, the wall of which may be gray, stiff, very tough to the finger nail, and non-irritable. Cardiac stimulants of the digitalis group seem to exert a harmful effect when injected in acute anaphylaxis. Blood coagulation is delayed; a loose clot forms after one half to two hours. Anti-anaphylaxis is produced when the animal does not succumb to the injection. When anaphylactic death is delayed for about one hour, a well developed rigor of the white muscles of the thigh, and of the diaphragm may occur while the animal is still alive. Reasons are brought forward to show the necessity of more caution in employing the word anaphylaxis. Friedberger's statement, that the lungs of guinea pigs dead from acute anaphylaxis are not characteristic of anaphylaxis for this animal, is shown to be baseless.

One of the most important purposes of scientific experiments performed by doctors on animals is to serve the interests of the clinic; it is a well-established fact, thanks to which modern medicine in general, and the clinic in particular, has been enriched with the greatest discoveries. Particularly important is the preliminary conduct of experiments on animals, when the clinic offers new means of treating diseases, which, for theoretical reasons, may turn out to be harmful to the human body; the use of such a means can be justified only in the case if the good results achieved by them cover its temporary harmful effect; but even under such conditions, the doctor should be aware of the unfavorable aspects of the action of the means used by him.

Identification of dynamics of the mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs), which exhibit transition between oscillations with large and small amplitudes, is very important for nonlinear physics. In this paper, the MMOs with transition between subthreshold oscillations and spikes are investigated in a neuron model. In the absence of noise, the MMOs appear between the resting state and period-1 firing with increasing depolarization current. After introducing white noise, coherence resonance (CR) is evoked from the resting state and non-CR is induced from period-1 firing far from the MMOs, which is consistent with the traditional viewpoint. However, an interesting result that a transition from anti-CR to CR is evoked by noise from both the MMOs and the period-1 firing near the MMOs is acquired, which is characterized by the increase, decrease and increase again of the coefficient of variations of interspike intervals (ISIs) with increasing noise intensity. At small noise intensity, more subthreshold oscillations are evoked by noise to reduce the firing frequency, resulting in faster increase of standard deviation (SD) of ISIs than that of mean value of ISIs, which is the cause for the anti-CR. The decrease of SD is faster for middle noise intensity and is lower for strong noise intensity, which is the cause for the CR. The different stochastic responses of MMOs and period-1 firing nearby at different levels of noise insanity are the dynamical mechanism for the transition from anti-CR to CR. Such results present potential functions of the MMOs and period-1 firing on information processing in the nervous system with noise and extend the conditions for the CR and anti-CR phenomena, which enriches the contents of nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract Some neurotropic enteroviruses hijack Trojan horse/raft commensal gut bacteria to render devastating biomimicking cryptic attacks on human/animal hosts. Such virus-microbe interactions manipulate hosts’ gut-brain axes with accompanying infection-cycle-optimizing central nervous system (CNS) disturbances, including severe neurodevelopmental, neuromotor, and neuropsychiatric conditions. Co-opted bacteria thus indirectly influence host health, development, behavior, and mind as possible “fair-weather-friend” symbionts, switching from commensal to context-dependent pathogen-like strategies benefiting gut-bacteria fitness.
