This study was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2016 and 2017 to investigate the impact of dormex, dormex plus mineral oil, dormex plus potassium nitrate, dormex plus calcium nitrate and dormex plus thiourea on bud break, growth, yield and some chemical constituents of Malus sylvestris "Ein Shamer". The trees were grown in loamy sand soil, and sprayed with six treatments (dormex (4%), (dormex (2%) plus mineral oil (2.5%),(dormex (2%) plus potassium nitrate (4%),(dormex (2%) plus calcium nitrate (4%) and (dormex (2%) plus thiourea (1%) and control. Generally, it was found that all studied growth parameters , date of flower bud break, percentage of bud break, fruit-setting ,fruit weight, fruit size, fruit number/tree, yield/tree (kg) and some chemical constituents of leaves (total chlorophyll ,total carbohydrates, total protein, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium contents) and some chemical constituents of fruits (total soluble solids(T.S.S.), T.S.S/ acid ratio, vitamin C, water content %, total free amino acids, total carbohydrates, total sugars and reducing sugars) were increased with the application of the different treatments. The best results were obtained from the treatments of dormex at 4% followed by (dormex (2%) plus mineral oil (2.5%). On the contrary, the same treatments decreased total acidity and total phenols in fruits as compared to the control. It could be recommended to use dormex at 4% and (dormex (2%) plus mineral oil (2.5%) for improving bud break, growth, yield and chemical constituents of apple trees or fruits.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum, L.) is an important aromatic plant in Egypt. A current work was aimed to study the impact of nano-chitosan rates (0.0, 2 and 4 ml/l), glutamine acid concentrations (0.0, 25, 50 and 100 ppm) and their interaction treatments on growth, yield components as well as volatile oil and some chemical constituents of coriander plant. Two field experiments were conducted at Kafr El-Hamam Experimental Station of Agric. Res. Cen., ElSharkia Governorate, Egypt during 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. These experiments were based as a split-plot in randomized block design with three replications. The nano- chitosan rates were randomly arranged in the main plots, while, glutamine acid (Gln) concentrations were distributed randomly in the sub plots. Based on two years study it was found that most of nano-chitosan rates and glutamine acid concentrations proved to be superior and recorded higher values of coriander yield components over control. Application of nano-chitosan at 4 ml/l resulted higher values of coriander growth (plant height, branch number per plant and total dry weight), yield components (number of inflorescences per coriander plant, fruit yield per plant and per feddan), volatile oil production (volatile oil percentage, volatile oil yield per plant and per feddan) as well as chemical constituents (N, P, K and total carbohydrates percentages in fruits and total chlorophyll content in coriander leaves) over the lowest rate and control. The same trend in these characters of coriander was obtained when Gln acid was used as foliar spray at 100 ppm concentration compared to the other ones under study. In general, nano-chitosan at 4 ml/l interacted with Gln acid at 50 ppm recorded the highest values of yield components of coriander plants compared to the other interaction treatments under study.  Finally, this treatment gave the highest values in major constituents of volatile oil such as linalool, camphor, gamma- terpinene, geranyl acetate and alpha-pinene.

Abstract Parameter estimation and wastewater characterization are crucial for modelling of the membrane enhanced biological phosphorus removal (MEBPR) process. Prior to determining the values of a subset of kinetic and stoichiometric parameters used in ASM No. 2 (ASM2), the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fractions of influent wastewater at the University of British Columbia (UBC) pilot plant were characterized. It was found that the UBC wastewater contained fractions of volatile acids (SA), readily fermentable biodegradable COD (SF) and slowly biodegradable COD (XS) that fell within the ASM2 default value ranges. The contents of soluble inert COD (SI) and particulate inert COD (XI) were somewhat higher than ASM2 default values. Mixed liquor samples from pilot-scale MEBPR and conventional enhanced biological phosphorus removal (CEBPR) processes operated under parallel conditions, were then analyzed experimentally to assess the impact of operation in a membrane-assisted mode on the growth yield (YH), decay coefficient (bH) and maximum specific growth rate of heterotrophic biomass (µH). The resulting values for YH, bH and µH were slightly lower for the MEBPR train than for the CEBPR train, but the differences were not statistically significant. It is suggested that MEBPR simulation using ASM2 could be accomplished satisfactorily using parameter values determined for a conventional biological phosphorus removal process, if MEBPR parameter values are not available.

Fresh pollen of 16 promising genotypes of gladiolus was tested for their pollen viability. Modified cellophane method was employed to assess the pollen viability. Pollen germination media consisted of 15% sucrose supplemented with 300 ppm calcium nitrate, 200 ppm magnesium sulphate, 100 ppm potassium nitrate and 100 ppm boric acid. Highly significant variations were observed for percentage of pollen germination, non-germinated pollen and sterile pollen. The highest pollen germination (76.41%) was in genotype Hybrid selection 88-10-22, and did not differ significantly from Gladiolus callianthus (75.41%), Sapna (75.10 %), Hybrid selection 86-32-11, (73.28 %), Kum Kum (69.41%), Poonam (69.22 %), Hybrid selection 87-22-1 (67.87 %), Hybrid selection 87-1-1 (67.61 %), Psittacinus hybrid (64.64%) and Darshan (63.97%). The lowest non- germinated pollen (10.47%) was in genotype Gladiolus callianthus, and insignificantly followed by Hybrid selection 88-10-22 with 18.77 % and Hybrid selection 87-22-1 with 18.95 %. The lowest percentage of sterile pollen was noticed in genotype Sapna (2.82%) followed by Poonam with 4.00 % Hybrid selection 88-10-22 with 4.82% and Hybrid selection 82-11-27 with 5.22%. The potential replacement of a treated residual aromatic extract mineral oil (TRAE) by a highly epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) into a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber compound was investigated. In order to determine if ESO compounds performance are suitable for tread tire applications, processing properties cure and characteristics were evaluated. The impact of ESO amount on the silica dispersion was confirmed by Payne Effect. The presence of chemical or physical interactions between ESO and silica improves the filler dispersion, enabling the compound processability and affecting the cure kinetic rate. An adjusted rubber compound with 2 phr of ESO and 2 phr of sulfur presented the higher stiffness and strength values with lower weight loss from a wear test compared with TRAE compound at an equal amount of oil and curing package. Furthermore, wet grip and rolling resistance predictors of both compounds gave comparable results, maintaining a better performance and reducing the dependence of mineral oil for tire tread compounds.

AbstractThe paper aims to determine the most significant physicochemical indicators of the effects that a lined landfill in southern Poland has had on groundwater quality. The results of the tests of groundwater and leachate water from the landfill for the period 2009 to 2016 were subjected to a detailed statistical analysis based on the 10 physicochemical parameters. A factor analysis was conducted considering the European Union and national requirements for landfills using analytical and statistical tools. The leachate contamination indicators from a landfill were analysed to reveal their interaction with the groundwater. The assessment indicated that there was an elevated and statistically significantly higher electrical conductivity and copper and total organic carbon concentrations in groundwater hydraulically downgradient of the landfill. The assessment also indicated that there were significant differences in the correlations between chemical parameters downgradient of the landfill and that there was a trend of increasing concentrations of some chemical constituents in groundwater. The adverse effects of the landfill were due to the deposited amount of waste exceeding 10 Mg per day. The impact was noticeable despite low and decreasing concentrations of heavy metals (Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn) in the leachate. The deterioration of the chemical state of the groundwater in the landfill vicinity could result in the extended time of pollutant migration or mass transport in the irrigated soil medium due to the limited efficiency of the leachate intake system or sealing screen after more than 20 years of landfill operation.
