This dissertation comprises five chapters, and it is an article-based format that studies teachers’ needs and characteristics regarding bullying intervention. It is divided into two phases that are explained through the different chapters. Chapter One explains the problem's overall background and provides an introduction to the three papers presented in the next chapters. Chapter Two presents the First Phase of the dissertation, which provided information about teachers’ knowledge, concerns, and practice regarding bullying. Findings demonstrate that Idaho education professionals need training and resources to help them intervene appropriately, especially with cyberbullying. Chapter Three focuses on the following potential teachers’ characteristics affecting their likelihood of intervention: Perceived seriousness of the bullying situation, empathy towards victim, and self-efficacy to influence misbehaviors. The findings regarding this last characteristic have been controversial since different studies found contrast findings regarding its significance influencing teachers’ likelihood of intervention. The current research found that the seriousness and empathy were predictors for teachers’ intervention in both in-person bullying and cyberbullying in Idaho and the Basque Country, but teachers’ self-efficacy does not predict teachers’ intervention. Chapter Four introduces a new characteristic: teachers’ sexism, which appears to be a negative component for the bullying intervention. The higher the sexist attitude, the less bullying intervention. Finally, Chapter Five summarizes the three articles presented in this dissertation and provides overall conclusions.

ABSTRACT Background: In the field of health-care education, theories and models help us to explain and predict behaviors to conduct effective health-care educational programs for changing behaviors. The Health Belief Model (HBM) contains several primary concepts by which individuals evaluate themselves to take action to change their behaviors, including antenatal care uptake in pregnant women. This study aimed to examine factors affecting the use of antenatal care. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was carried out in Semarang, Central Java, from June to August 2020. A sample of 250 pregnant women was selected by simple random sampling. The dependent variable was antenatal care. The independent variables were attitude, knowledge, information, self-efficacy, perceived seriousness, perceived susceptibility, perceived barrier, perceived benefit, cues to action, husband support, and facilities. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple logistic regression. Results: Complete antenatal care increased with strong support (OR= 38.97; 95% CI= 3.19 to 476.53; p= 0.004), high knowledge (OR= 16.44; 95% CI= 2.54 to 106.60; p= 0.003), positive attitude (OR= 29.88; 95% CI= 2.88 to 309.92; p= 0.004), high information toward antenatal care (OR= 31.42; 95% CI= 4.07 to 242.41; p= 0.001), strong self-efficacy (OR= 7.85; 95% CI= 1.50 40.99; p= 0.015), strong cues to action (OR= 11.97; 95% CI= 2.01 to 71.36; p= 0.006), high perceived seriousness (OR= 32.99; 95% CI= 3.93 to 276.98; p= 0.001), high perceived susceptibility (OR= 24.29; 95% CI= 2.50 to 235.78; p= 0.006), high perceived benefit (OR= 30.43; 95% CI= 2.99 to 308.80; p= 0.004), high perceived barrier (OR= 0.07; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.57; p= 0.013) and complete facilities (OR= 63.52; 95% CI= 3.62 to 1115.08; p= 0.005). Conclusion: Complete antenatal care increases with strong support, high knowledge, positive attitude, high information toward antenatal care, strong self-efficacy, strong cues to action, high perceived seriousness, high perceived susceptibility, high perceived benefit, high perceived barrier and complete facilities. Empirical studies have shown that explicit instruction leads to the improvement of perception (e.g. Strange and Dittman 1984; Jamieson and Morosan 1986; Cenoz and García Lecumberri 1999) and oral production (e.g. Couper 2003; Derwing and Munro 2005; Smith and Beckman 2005). Nonetheless, it is necessary to test different types of activities intended for the explicit teaching of pronunciation. This action-research study aims to test the efficacy of a reading aloud task with a noticing and an awareness component in the teaching of pronunciation, and to gauge learners’ beliefs regarding the use of this learning tool. Twenty first-year students of the BA in English Studies at the University of the Basque Country participated in the investigation. Ten written texts were selected by the instructors in order to practice reading aloud for ten weeks. Students went through two phases when doing this task in class: noticing and awareness. They were tested on articulation of sounds, stress placement and intonation through two different texts at two different times. Students were also administered a questionnaire to analyze their opinions regarding the usefulness of this learning task. The assessment of the recordings revealed that learners obtained better means in the case of the second text analyzed. Similarly, the analysis of the responses given to the questionnaire indicated that students considered the reading aloud task a good instrument to improve their pronunciation in English.

Abstract Background The quality of life of chronically ill individuals, such as hay fever sufferers, is significantly dependent on their health behavior. This survey aimed to explain the health-related behavior of allergic individuals using the protection motivation theory (PMT) and the transtheoretical model (TTM). Methods The influencing variables stated by PMT were operationalized based on data from semistructured pilot interviews and a pretest with 12 individuals from the target population. The final questionnaire inquired perceived seriousness and severity of hay fever, response efficacy, response costs, self-efficacy, and the use of various hay fever management measures in relation to the TTM stages. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to investigate the relationships between the PMT constructs and the examined health behavior. Results A total of 569 allergic individuals completed the online questionnaire. Only 33.26% of allergic individuals were in the maintenance stage for treatment under medical supervision, and almost 60% preferred hay fever self-management. A total of 67.56% had a well-established habit of taking anti-allergic medication, but only 25.31% had undergone specific immunotherapy. The likelihood of seeking medical supervision was positively influenced by perceived severity (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02–1.81), perceived seriousness (OR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.56–2.89), and self-efficacy (OR = 4.52, 95% CI: 3.11–6.65). The perceived severity of symptoms predicted the practice of hay fever self-management (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.21–2.11), as well as anti-allergic medication intake (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.16–2.35). The latter measure was also positively influenced by self-efficacy (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.01–2.28) and hay fever self-management (OR = 4.76, 95% CI: 2.67–7.49). Undergoing specific immunotherapy was significantly predicted only by medical supervision (OR = 9.80, 95% CI: 8.16–13.80). Allergen avoidance was a strategy used by allergic individuals who preferred hay fever self-management (OR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.87–3.52) and experienced notable symptom severity (OR = 2.12, 95% CI: 1.60–2.81). Conclusion Educational interventions that increase the awareness of health risks associated with inadequate hay fever management and measures to increase self-efficacy might be beneficial for the promotion of appropriate hay fever management among allergic individuals.

Background. Ongoing rehabilitation after stroke is limited. Using video-guided exercises, which are implemented with a self-management approach, may be a way to facilitate ongoing exercise in the home environment. Objectives. To investigate the feasibility of a video-guided exercise program, implemented with a self-management approach for people with stroke. Methods. A phase I, single-group, clinical trial. The study comprised two phases: in phase one, four weeks of the program was supported by weekly supervised sessions and in phase two, four weeks of the program was completed without direct supervision. Demographic information was recorded at baseline. Adherence and adverse events were self-reported via a logbook. Acceptability was measured through a purpose-built scale. Physical performance, physical activity, and exercise self-efficacy were measured at baseline and 4 and 8 weeks. Results. Sixteen people with stroke were recruited; however, 14 commenced and completed the study. Adherence during the supervised phase was 3.3 hours per week and 2.3 hours per week during the self-directed phase. There were no adverse events. Most participants indicated that the program was easy to use (92%) and would recommend the program to others (86%). Walking speed improved over the duration of the program (mean difference -0.12 m/s, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.02, p = 0.02 ). Self-efficacy and physical activity did not change over the duration of the program. Conclusion. The findings support the feasibility of a video-guided exercise program for people with stroke. Further research to confirm the effectiveness of this intervention to improve physical function is warranted.
