The article describes the method of calculating the wave field of reflected waves of a certain type of re-reflection from localized target objects. A special feature of the method is the combination of the wave field continuation operator calculated by means of layer-by-layer recalculation based on the Kirchhoff integral and the finite-difference operator of reflected waves. Parameterization of the wave field continuation operator type is determined on the basis of the frame effective depth-velocity model. The research is carried out by Seismotech, Ltd under the grant support of "Skolkovo" Foundation.

Just as synthetic seismic data can be created by expressing the wave field radiating from a seismic source as a set of Gaussian beams, recorded data can be downward continued by expressing the recorded wave field as a set of Gaussian beams emerging at the earth’s surface. In both cases, the Gaussian beam description of the seismic‐wave propagation can be advantageous when there are lateral variations in the seismic velocities. Gaussian‐beam downward continuation enables wave‐equation calculation of seismic propagation, while it retains the interpretive raypath description of this propagation. This paper describes a zero‐offset depth migration method that employs Gaussian beam downward continuation of the recorded wave field. The Gaussian‐beam migration method has advantages for imaging complex structures. Like finite‐difference migration, it is especially compatible with lateral variations in velocity, but Gaussian beam migration can image steeply dipping reflectors and will not produce unwanted reflections from structure in the velocity model. Unlike other raypath methods, Gaussian beam migration has guaranteed regular behavior at caustics and shadows. In addition, the method determines the beam spacing that ensures efficient, accurate calculations. The images produced by Gaussian beam migration are usually stable with respect to changes in beam parameters.

We have designed a target-oriented methodology to perform Full Waveform Inversion using a frequency-domain wave propagator based on the so-called Patched Green’s Function (PGF) technique. Originally developed in condensed matter physics to describe electronic waves in materials, the PGF technique is easily adaptable to the case of wave propagation in a spatially variable media in general. By dividing the entire computational domain into two sections, namely the target area and the outside target area, we calculate the Green Functions related to each section separately. The calculations related to the section outside the target are performed only once at the beginning of inversion, whereas the calculations in the target area are performed repeatedly for each iteration of the inversion process. With the Green Functions of the separate areas, we calculate the Green Functions of the two systems patched together through the application of a Recursive Dyson equation. By performing 2D and time-lapse experiments on the Marmousi model and a Brazilian Pre-salt velocity model, we demonstrate that the target-oriented PGF reduces the computational time of the inversion without compromising accuracy. In fact, when compared with conventional FWI results, the PGF-based calculations are identical but done in a fraction of the time.

Estimation of an accurate velocity macromodel is an important step in seismic imaging. We have developed an approach based on coherence measurements and finite-offset (FO) beam stacking. The algorithm is an FO common-reflection-surface tomography, which aims to determine the best layered depth-velocity model by finding the model that maximizes a semblance objective function calculated from the amplitudes in common-midpoint (CMP) gathers stacked over a predetermined aperture. We develop the subsurface velocity model with a stack of layers separated by smooth interfaces. The algorithm is applied layer by layer from the top downward in four steps per layer. First, by automatic or manual picking, we estimate the reflection times of events that describe the interfaces in a time-migrated section. Second, we convert these times to depth using the velocity model via application of Dix’s formula and the image rays to the events. Third, by using ray tracing, we calculate kinematic parameters along the central ray and build a paraxial FO traveltime approximation for the FO common-reflection-surface method. Finally, starting from CMP gathers, we calculate the semblance of the selected events using this paraxial traveltime approximation. After repeating this algorithm for all selected CMP gathers, we use the mean semblance values as an objective function for the target layer. When this coherence measure is maximized, the model is accepted and the process is completed. Otherwise, the process restarts from step two with the updated velocity model. Because the inverse problem we are solving is nonlinear, we use very fast simulated annealing to search the velocity parameters in the target layers. We test the method on synthetic and real data sets to study its use and advantages.

Abstract Salt is known for having a generally low density and higher velocity compared with the surrounding rock layers which causes the energy to scatter once the seismic wavefield hits the salt body and relatively less energy is transmitted through the salt to the deeper subsurface. As a result, most of imaging approaches are unable to image the base of the salt and the reservoir below the salt. Even the velocity model building such as FWI often fails to illuminate the deeper parts of salt area. In this paper, we show that Full Wavefield Redatuming (FWR) is used to retrieved and enhance the seismic data below the salt area, leading to a better seismic image quality and allowing us to focus on updating the velocity in target area below the salt. However, this redatuming approach requires a good overburden velocity model to retrieved good redatumed data. Thus, by using synthetic SEAM model, our objective is to study on the accuracy of the overburden velocity model required for imaging beneath complex overburden. The results show that the kinematic components of wave propagation are preserved through redatuming even with heavily smoothed overburden velocity model.

Reflected P‐to‐P and P‐to‐S converted seismic waves in a two‐component elastic common‐source gather generated with a P‐wave source in a two‐dimensional model can be imaged by two independent scalar reverse‐time depth migrations. The inputs to migration are pure P‐ and S‐waves that are extracted by divergence and curl calculations during (shallow) extrapolation of the elastic data recorded at the earth’s surface. For both P‐to‐P and P‐to‐S converted reflected waves, the imaging time at each point is the P‐wave traveltime from the source to that point. The extracted P‐wave is reverse‐time extrapolated and imaged with a P‐velocity model, using a finite difference solution of the scalar wave equation. The extracted S‐wave is reverse‐time extrapolated and imaged similarly, but with an S‐velocity model. Converted S‐wave data requires a polarity correction prior to migration to ensure constructive interference between data from adjacent sources. Synthetic examples show that the algorithm gives satisfactory results for laterally inhomogeneous models.

Wave‐equation migration can form an accurate image of the subsurface from suitable VSP data. The image’s extent and resolution are determined by the receiver array dimensions and the source location(s). Experiments with synthetic and real data show that the region of reliable image extent is defined by the specular “zone of illumination.” Migration is achieved through wave‐field extrapolation, subject to an imaging procedure. Wave‐field extrapolation is based upon the scalar wave equation and, for VSP data, is conveniently handled by the Kirchhoff integral. The migration of VSP data calls for imaging very close to the borehole, as well as imaging in the far field. This dual requirement is met by retaining the near‐field term of the integral. The complete integral solution is readily controlled by various weighting devices and processing strategies, whose worth is demonstrated on real and synthetic data.

Long-wavelength velocity model building is a nonlinear process. It has traditionally been achieved without appealing to wave-equation-based approaches for combined refracted and reflected waves. We developed a cascaded wave-equation tomography method in the data domain, taking advantage of the information contained in the reflected and refracted waves. The objective function was the traveltime residual that maximized the crosscorrelation function between real and synthetic data. To alleviate the nonlinearity of the inversion problem, refracted waves were initially used to provide vertical constraints on the velocity model, and reflected waves were then included to provide lateral constraints. The use of reflected waves required scale separation. We separated the long- and short-wavelength subsurface structures into velocity and density models, respectively. The velocity model update was restricted to long wavelengths during the wave-equation tomography, whereas the density model was used to absorb all the short-wavelength impedance contrasts. To improve the computation efficiency, the density model was converted into the zero-offset traveltime domain, where it was invariant to changes of the long-wavelength velocity model. After the wave-equation tomography has derived an optimized long-wavelength velocity model, full-waveform inversion was used to invert all the data to retrieve the short-wavelength velocity structures. We developed our method in two synthetic tests and then applied it to a marine field data set. We evaluated the results of the use of refracted and reflected waves, which was critical for accurately building the long-wavelength velocity model. We showed that our wave-equation tomography strategy was robust for the real data application.

Abstract. We present a new 1-D P wave seismic velocity model (called MP1-SUW) of the upper mantle structure beneath the western rim of the East European Craton (EEC) based on the analysis of the earthquakes recorded at the Suwałki (SUW) seismic station located in NE Poland which belongs to the Polish Seismological Network (PLSN). Motivation for this study arises from the observation of a group of reflected waves after expected P410P at epicentral distances 2300–2800 km from the SUW station. Although the existing global models represent the first-arrival traveltimes, they do not represent the full wavefield with all reflected waves because they do not take into account the structural features occurring regionally such as 300 km discontinuity. We perform P wave traveltime analysis using 1-D and 2-D forward ray-tracing modelling for the distances of up to 3000 km. We analysed 249 natural seismic events from four azimuthal spans with epicentres in the western Mediterranean Sea region (WMSR), the Greece and Turkey region (GTR), the Caucasus region (CR) and the part of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Jan Mayen Island (JMR). For all chosen regions, except the JMR group for which 2-D modelling was performed, we estimate a 1-D average velocity model which will characterize the main seismic discontinuities. It appears that a single 1-D model (MP1-SUW model) explains well the observed traveltimes for the analysed groups of events. Differences resulting from the different azimuth range of earthquakes are close to the assumed picking uncertainty. The MP1-SUW model documents the bottom of the asthenospheric low-velocity zone (LVZ) at the depth of 220 km, 335 km discontinuity and the zone with the reduction of P wave velocity atop 410 km discontinuity which is depressed to 440 km depth. The nature of the regionally occurring 300 km boundary is explained here by tracing the ancient subduction regime related to the closure of the Iapetus Ocean, the Rheic Ocean and the Tornquist Sea.
