This study explored the information literacy (IL) development of international higher degree research (HDR) students from China as they undertook their research studies in an Australian university. International HDR students need advanced IL skills to complete their research degree. However, IL research and training in western countries has tended to regard international HDR students no differently from their undergraduate counterparts. That is, there has been a focus on basic information skills rather than considering the more complicated and advanced IL needs within a research context. The project presented in this paper aimed to explore this gap. Three international PhD students from China participated in this research. A biographical approach was used to collect the data, and a total of 222 reflective accounts were collected from the participants over a period of fifteen months. In these reflections, they recorded significant life and study experiences at the University of Western Sydney. This approach allowed the participants freedom to express their thoughts and feelings without interruption and enabled them to speak frankly and freely without prejudice. The approach to data analysis underpinning this study was based on Bruce’s (1997) relational model of IL. The findings indicate that these international HDR students experience significant difficulties in developing their IL skills during their research studies in their western university. The complex nature of research study, which demands high levels of IL, significantly contributes to these difficulties, as do the different language and culture of international students which pose additional challenges to their information use. This article concludes with recommendations for research supervisors and librarians to consider in the provision of IL education for international students.

Purpose - The innovation process is characterized by being continuous and focused mainly on the differentiation of the organizations, aiming at obtaining a competitive advantage. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the innovation process in publicly traded companies of Serra Gaúcha.Design/methodology/approach - A quantitative study was conducted through a survey with descriptive statistical analysis. The questionnaire was prepared based on the study of Floriani, Beuren and Machado (2013) and sent to seven companies from Serra Gaúcha listed on BMF Bovespa. The analysis was segmented into organizational capabilities, innovation contexts, innovation focus, and enhanced performance.Findings - The results showed that there are procedures in the processes in most companies, and the focus of innovation is especially on products and directed to the market. All organizations use their own resources to execute innovations. Most of the registered patents are in the national sphere, and two companies have not registered any patents in the last two years.Originality/value -  Previous studies have not identified any companies from Serra Gaúcha as participants in the innovation process in Brazilian publicly traded companies. Besides, it is impossible to define a profile of the region from the data treatment in previous studies. The proposed study analyzes how the innovation process occurs in publicly traded companies of Serra Gaúcha listed on BMF Bovespa.

Purpose/thesis: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the issue of information literacy (IL) in view of French-Polish comparative research on information users. In the first part of the paper the similarities and differences in Polish and French approaches to information literacy are analyzed from the perspective of higher education. Next, the results of research conducted among doctoral students at the University of Warsaw and the University of Lille are presented. Approach/methods: Three methods were used: survey, nonparticipant observation and elements of grounded theory. The research tended on the one hand to verify the hypothesis on a low use of scientific journals by doctoral students, and on the other hand to answer the question what librarians and faculty should do to increase this use. Results and conclusions: Two major factors were identified: (1) the lack of specialized library instruction addressed to doctoral students (in the case of Poland) and (2) the lack of promotion/ dissemination of such instruction among doctoral students and lecturers who could encourage their students to participate (in the case of France). Research limitations: The response sample may be perceived too small to be representative for both universities; the method of identifying the field of studies may be disputable; the question if the universities in Lille and Warsaw are comparable might be posed. Practical implications: This study might help librarians understand users’ needs and define the gaps in the library offer. It also highlights the importance of the IL education in the university environment. Originality/value: This is the first study of its kind and the first comparative study conducted after the implementation of Bologna Process. It identifies the issues that might be considered and implemented by the libraries with the main one being the reinforcement of the role and importance of IL.

The study employed ethnographic inquiry to present the lived experiences of Chinese international students while attending the University of Regina, Canada. The findings displayed the transformative experiences of this group, including language acquisition, academic and social challenges, and the strategies by which the cultural group attempted to overcome the challenges with gender comparison. The study highlighted specific challenges affecting Chinese female students as they labor to overcome sexism and patriarchy on two continents. Cultural stereotyping and negative labeling were also evaluated in detail. Arguably, the findings might potentially impact education/social policies and university protocols as impinging vulnerable groups. Recommendations were made to alleviating difficulties for the group in facilitating a more supportive learning process within the university environment.

This article presents a case study for developing course journals, an approach to student writing and publishing that involves students in the production of an online, open access journal within a structured classroom environment. Simon Fraser University (SFU) Library’s Digital Publishing program has partnered with instructors in four different departments across the university to implement course journals in their classrooms using Open Journal Systems. Two models of course journals have emerged, both of which offer valuable learning opportunities for students around scholarly communications, information literacy, and open pedagogy. In Model 1, students act as both authors who write and submit their work for publication in the course journal and as reviewers who referee each other’s submitted work. In Model 2, students act as the course journal editors, crafting the course journal’s call for papers, soliciting content, recruiting reviewers, and managing the editorial workflow from submission to publication. This article discusses challenges and opportunities of both models as well as strategies for smooth implementation and collaboration with classroom instructors.

The population of international students has increased significantly at the University of Windsor in recent years, and the university takes a variety of actions to address several key issues of interest to international students, including academic integrity, English language development, and writing support. This chapter reports findings from a multi-year collaborative project that was designed to enhance international students' library and academic literacy, with a focus on the understanding of plagiarism and measures to prevent it. A number of workshops that involved students at different levels were delivered to students from the English language improvement, undergraduate, and graduate programs. Research data collected from these workshops indicate that students benefited from the workshops, although at different degrees because of various factors, such as academic discipline, English language proficiency, previous educational experience. Further research can be conducted to explore ways to optimize such programs to meet the needs of students, particularly international students.
