Abstract La Colle was an influential Anishinaabe ogimaa (leader) and mayosewinini (war chief) who led the Monsoni (moose) doodem (clan) in the Rainy Lake region during the 1730s and 1740s. A biographical study of La Colle not only restores an individual Indigenous voice to the tapestry of Native North America but also provides insight into a conflict between the Anishinaabeg, Nêhiyawak (Crees), Nakoda (Assiniboines), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Dakota, Yankton, Yanktonai, and Lakota) that took place in the borderlands between Lake Superior and the Upper Missouri Valley. Ultimately, the conflict saw the beginning of a considerable reorientation of Indigenous geopolitics west of Lake Superior, which were, in part, driven by the actions of a cunning political and military leader—La Colle. By uniting Anishinaabeg, Nêhiyawak, and Nakoda into a coalition powerful enough to challenge the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, La Colle made one of the most significant bids for power in eighteenth-century North America, one that eventually reconfigured the political, demographic, and environmental landscapes of the Northwest.

Finally here comes a volume modestly entitled Tolkien and the First World War. On the threshold of Middle-earth. This is the result of many years of study by the author, John Garth, who writes in the introduction: This biographical study was born from one observation: how strange that J.R.R.  T o l k i e n  b e g a n  t o  c r e a t e  h i s  m o n u m e n t a l  m y t h o l o g y  i n  t h e  m i d s t  o f  t h e  F i r s t  W o r l d  W a r, [emphasis added — J.Z.L] that disappointing crisis that shaped the present day. This sentence may surprise the Polish reader, whose consciousness has shaped a completely different image of the First World War, as an event that may have been a crisis, but gave Poland the independence it had been dreaming of for over a hundred years. Meanwhile, for the generation to which Tolkien belongs, it was just that — a crisis. As Hermann Broch, who was slightly older than him, wrote about this war: “Goodbye Europe, beautiful tradition is over”. Garth shows how Tolkien contrasted his work with this perception of the experience of the Great War, a work that is a great mythical story about destruction but also about hope. At the same time, it is a tribute to the memory of the generation that died in the trenches of Flanders.

The purpose of the study light the problem related to the tracking of the historical evolution of embroidery, creative activity of the people's masters (on the example of the popular master P. Vlasenko), and determine the development of educational and teaching activities in the direction of embroidery art. The problem of restoring real events of the historical and pedagogical process occurring in schools-workshops on Ukrainian lands is updated. The leading task arose the question of drawing attention to the names of the patients of the late XIX century of the twentieth century, which contributed to the development of professional pedagogy, but whose activities through prohibitions and persecution did not receive appropriate lighting and was comprehensively studied. To develop an urgent problem of historical Ukrainian self-identification, it is important to establish deliberately forgotten figures, restoring the stupid pages of history Methodology is based on the principles of historical and art historical analysis, methods of systematization of factual material, and typological analysis. To identify the personal contribution of masters in the development of art embroidery, a biographical method of historical, psychological, historical, and pedagogical knowledge was used. Scientific novelty. It is the disclosure of new facts and a solid analysis of the pictorial activities of patients, which were engaged in the development of decorative and applied arts. For the first time, a biographical study of the vital activity of the Master of People's Art of the Ukrainian SSR P. Vlasenko, clarified its contribution to the Ukrainian culture. Reflecting a picture of a person's life as a whole, the relationship between individual histories with the history of society is covered. Conclusions. Based on the results of the study and art historical generalization, we can draw conclusions that traditions and modernity are closely intertwined. Paying attention to the treasures of folk art, telling about the unique experience of the masters of the past, the ways of development of educational and teaching activities in the direction of embroidery art are determined. The transfer of art historical experience when teaching students the basics of composite constructions, recognizing the technological and technical execution of traditional ornamental embroidery, makes it possible to apply the surveyed skills in the future. By offering the current generation to receive knowledge in educational institutions and, accordingly, motivating them, pedagogical groups provide the opportunity to self-consciously revive and distribute the traditions of past generations, promoting Ukrainian art.

Doctorov gives an interview where issues are touched upon related to the development and achievements of a project on the history of Soviet/Russian sociology, a project which he has been curating for almost 20 years, as well as to a biographical study in the field of American sociology and the study of public opinion. Doctorov’s project deals with solving the theoretical, methodological and empirical issues of applying the biographical method in historical-sociological research. The author’s main methodological developments include the concept of Russian sociology’s rebirth, substantiation for generational-functional analysis, and the notion of a biographical quality to creative work in sociology, which includes the recently launched development of non-linear biographical analysis. The article discusses the author’s empirical research related to determining the generational structure of Russia’s sociological community, as well as the possibility of its study by means of in-depth interview via e-mail. It also examines the content and relevance of a collection of interviews with Russian sociologists (titled “Big portrait”), as well as an online-book titled “Biographical interviews with social scientist colleagues” (this one is interactive) and the nine-volume “Modern Russian sociology: historical-biographical pursuits”, all of which mention the main findings of B. Doctorov’s project.
