Introduction: Menopause can have negative effects on the quality of life of postmenopausal women. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of post-menopausal women in Yazd City, Iran. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 postmenopausal women over 50 years of age in Yazd. The standard SF-36 quality of life questionnaire was used to collect the data. The mean score of quality of life was calculated for the postmenopausal women in different domains based on their age, education, menopausal age, and number of children. Furthermore, the effect of participants’ age, education, menopausal age, and number of children was studied on the questionnaire domains and the mean menopausal age. Results: The participants’ mean age  was 62±5/198 years and the mean age of menopause was 54±4/419years. Life expectancy had a significant relationship with  education variables, BMI, and number of children, but it had no significant relationship with occupation and age at menopause. The variables of education, employment, and BMI had a direct and significant relationship with the mean age of menopause, but the number of children did not show a significant relationship with the mean age of menopause. Conclusion: Based on the findings, postmenopausal women were at an undesirable level in terms of physical health and social vitality. The information collected through this study can help the authorities to plan appropriate programs and take measures to improve the quality of life in these women.

Purpose Exemestane, a steroidal aromatase inhibitor, reduced invasive breast cancer incidence by 65% among 4,560 postmenopausal women randomly assigned to exemestane (25 mg per day) compared with placebo in the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group MAP.3 (Mammary Prevention 3) trial, but effects on quality of life (QOL) were not fully described. Patients and Methods Menopause-specific and health-related QOL were assessed by using the four Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL) domains and the eight Medical Outcomes Study Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scales at baseline, 6 months, and yearly thereafter. MENQOL questionnaire completion was high (88% to 98%) in both groups at each follow-up visit. Change scores for each MENQOL and SF-36 scale, calculated at each assessment time relative to baseline, were compared by using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Clinically important worsened QOL was defined as a MENQOL change score increase of more than 0.5 (of 8) points and an SF-36 change score decrease of more than 5 (of 100) points from baseline. Results Exemestane had small negative effects on women's self-reported vasomotor symptoms, sexual symptoms, and pain, which occurred mainly in the first 6 months to 2 years after random assignment. However, these changes represented only a small excess number of women being given exemestane with clinically important worsening of QOL at one time or another; specifically, 8% more in the vasomotor domain and 4% more each in the sexual domain and for pain. No other between-group differences were observed. Overall, slightly more women in the exemestane arm (32%) than in the placebo arm (28%) discontinued assigned treatment. Conclusion Exemestane given for prevention has limited negative impact on menopause-specific and health-related QOL in healthy postmenopausal women at risk for breast cancer.

Background/Aim. Colorectal cancer and its treatment can have a negative impact on the quality of life which has become an important outcome measure for cancer patients. The aim of this work was assessment of psychological and spiritual dimension of the quality of life in colostomy patients, regarding the gender and age. Methods. This is a cross-sectional study conducted at the Abdominal Surgery Polyclinic in the Clinical Canter of Vojvodina among colostomy patients operated between January 2010 and June 2011. The instrument used in this study was Quality of Life Questionnaire for a Patient with an Ostomy (QOL-O). Results. Majority of respondents were male (M:F = 50.7% : 49.3%). The age ranged between 36?86 years. Respondents did not report difficulties in adjustment to stoma, but their great difficulty was to look at it and the sense of depression and anxiety. The care of stoma was worse perceived by younger respondents (p = 0.014). Respondents were mostly satisfied with their memorizing ability and having the sense of control. The lowest score was found in sensing satisfaction or enjoyment in life. The age had a significant impact on positive aspects of psychological well-being (p < 0.05). Higher scores were found among younger age groups. The mean score of spiritual well-being (6.47 ? 3.01) was lower than the mean score of psychological well-being (7.76 ? 2.35). There were no statistically significant differences regarding gender (t = -0.738, df = 65, p = 0.463) or age (F = 1.307, p = 0.280). Conclusion. Psychological and spiritual well-being in colostomy patients appeared to be at satisfactory level, but it is necessary to provide tailor made support in order to prevent and resolve negative responses to stoma.

Menopause can cause mental, physical, vasomotor, and sexual symptoms and problems, which negatively affect the quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate QOL among Iranian postmenopausal women. This systematic review was conducted on cross-sectional studies that were published between 2000 and 2018. An online search to find studies published in English or Persian was conducted in the databases of Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, Scientific Information Database, Magiran, and IranMedex. Search key terms were “quality of life”, “menopause”, and “Iran”. Fourteen studies were eligible for this study. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist was used for quality appraisal. The mean and standard deviation of QOL and its domains were extracted from the selected studies. Study data were analyzed using the Review Manager (v. 5.0) and the STATA (v. 12.0) software. The mean of total QOL among 3413 postmenopausal women was 57.89±12.8 (in the possible range of 0–174). The means of its vasomotor, psychosocial, physical, and sexual domains were 7.86±2.14, 19.43±2.05, 40.58±3.33, and 6.71±1.77, respectively. The QOL among Iranian postmenopausal women is nearly higher than the moderate level. The lowest and the highest levels of QOL are related to the physical and sexual domains, respectively. Health authorities need to develop educational interventions to promote postmenopausal women’s QOL, particularly in the physical domain. [GMJ.2020;9:e1649]

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by the parafunctional act of tightening or grinding the teeth, which may occur in a conscious or unconscious way, during sleep or in wakefulness. It has become a growing concern in recent years due to its negative impact on quality of life (QOL) and also because it is considered an important risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the QOL related to bruxism in physiotherapy teachers from a private institution through a questionnaire and their perception for such parafunction. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative and exploratory study. The self-perception of bruxism was assessed through three questions from the Fonseca Anamnestic Indexand the perspective of QLV through the Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), with a sample of 38 teachers of both genders. Results: Based on the results found, the level of statistical significance was set at p<0,05 for all tests. Among the 38 interviewees, 47,4% (n = 18) of professionals were observed with bruxism, with a higher prevalence in the female gender. Regarding the comparisons of QOL in relation to bruxism, a statistically significant difference was found in relation to the dimension of Pain (p=0,014), in which the mean for the bruxism group was (59,8) and without bruxism (78,5). Conclusion: There is a relation of the bruxism with the quality of life of the interviewees, and this habit mainly interferes in the domain of pain. Another aspect that was shown to be significantly associated with bruxism was nervous tension, in which the tense and nervous professionals were associated with self-perception of bruxism.

Background: Asthma is a common chronic illness worldwide. Identifying and treating impaired health-related quality of life is now recognized as an important component of asthma management. High prevalence of behavioral and emotional difficulties was noticed among children with asthma. Methods: Cross-sectional study that was conducted over 8 weeks involving 45 asthmatic children within the ages of 7-17 years old presented to Jordan University Hospital in Amman, Jordan. General demographic characteristics were collected, two questionnaires were used: asthma control test (ACT), and the pediatric asthma quality of life questionnaire (PAQLQ). We also used the feeling thermometer scale, and a pulmonary function test was done for patients. SAS Software version 9.4 USA and Pearsons coefficient were used to find associations. Results and Discussion: Among 45 patients, 53% of the sample had poor asthma control. The mean FEV1 on lung function testing was 80% (± 16.18) of predicted. The mean for asthma clinical scores (ACT) were 18.8 ± 4.53 (out of 25). FEV1 was significantly higher in children with good control compared to those with a low ACT score (P value <0.05). Mean total PAQLQ score was 5.3 ± 1.06 and it correlated significantly with ACT score (P value <0.001). Conclusion: This study highlights the association of poorly controlled asthma with a poor quality of life. It is recommended that the quality of life of children should be assessed and observed during clinic visits, for a better comprehensive approach and effective improvement of outcome.

Abstract Objective The present work aimed at determining the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and factors associated with the Quality of life among postmenopausal women. Materials and methods This cross-sectional work was carried out on 270 postmenopausal females referring to health centers of Hamadan city chosen by stratified random sampling. A questionnaire of the Menopausal Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQOL) was used as the data collection method. Although, the Mann–Whitney test and the Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to compare MENQOL item scores. The significance level of statistical tests was regarded as less than 0.05. Results The mean MENQOL Score in menopausal was 2.45 ± 1.04. Also, vasomotor symptoms had the highest score, and sexual symptoms had the lowest score rather than other dimensions. There was a significant association between the total menopausal quality of life score and job, economy status, smoking, exercise, supplemental Omega-3 s intake, and Postmenopausal stage (p < 0.01). As smokers, women had increasing levels of bother experienced from the MENQOL symptom than non-smokers (mean = 3.67 ± 0.85 vs. 2.36 ± 0.99; p < 0.001). While the MENQOL scores for menopausal females who exercised more often (mean = 1.56 ± 0.7) had lower than those who exercised less than 3 times per week (mean = 3.27 ± 0.9; p < 0.001). However the lowest score was menopausal females who had taking supplemental Omega-3 s than those who hadn't taken it (mean = 2.15 ± 1.06 vs. 2.65 ± 0.97; p < 0.001). Though women who had postmenopausal stage less than 5 years stage (mean = 2.28 ± 0.87) had significantly lower MENQOL scores from those who had postmenopausal stage 5 or more years (mean = 2.63 ± 1.16; p < 0.001). Conclusion Based on the results, vasomotor symptoms were the most dominant symptom. Therefore, it is necessary to improve physical activity levels, focusing on job status, recommend taking an omega 3 s supplement, and planning education and promotion intervention for cessation or prevention of smoking among postmenopausal women to increase the MENQOL is essential.

Recently, numerous articles have been published describing atypical lesions of the jaw bones related to treatment with medications based on phosphorus or analogs of its compounds, particularly bisphosphonates. Goal: To conduct a comparative analysis of the quality of life after radical surgery of the jaw in patients with medication-related osteonecrosis. A total of 82 patients were interviewed, of which 39 (47.6%) patients were in the control group (conservative treatment) and 43 (52.4%) patients in the main group had radical surgical treatment. The mean age of patients in both groups was 66.8 ± 10.03 years. Treatment of patients in the control group in terms of conventional conservative protocol included the local application of 0.05% chlorhexidine solution 1–2 times a day, antibacterial therapy (clindamycin—150 mg 4 times daily for 7 days) and NSAIDs (nimesulide). Patients in the main group (n = 43) underwent segmental resection of the jaw. Thirty days and then 6 months after the treatment, all patients were asked to assess the intensity of pain using a numerical scale, where 0 = no pain, 5 = moderate pain and 10 = the most severe pain imaginable, and to fill in the SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results: An analysis of the results obtained with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale demonstrated that the mean pain intensity before treatment was 8.9 points in the control group, and 9.7 in the main group. These values were indicative of “unbearable pain.” After treatment (30 days), the pain score in the control group decreased and amounted to 4.1, which is evidence of the persistence of “moderate pain” in patients. In patients who underwent segmental jaw resection, the mean pain intensity was 0.5. There was no relationship with gender, but there was a direct relationship between the intensity of the pain and the stage of the process (CI = 95%). The SF-36 quality of life questionnaire showed that in the control group, who were treated conservatively, bodily pain (BoP) decreased from a score of 91.2 to 34.3, and the mental health score increased from 34.2 before treatment to 36.3 after treatment, which indicates the persistence of discomfort. The remaining parameters improved after treatment, but no complete recovery was achieved. Before radical surgery, the main group of patients also had a high level of bodily pain (95.2), but after surgery this decreased to 12.4. The remaining parameters also showed a significant difference before and after radical surgery, indicating a positive trend. Radical surgery allows us to improve the quality of life of patients, thereby confirming that surgical volume is a secondary aspect if there is no relapse after the treatment.

EVALUATION OF QUALITY OF LIFE OF INDIVIDUALS SUFFERING FROM CEREBRAL VASCULAR ACCIDENTS ASSISTED BY A BASIC HEALTH UNIT ABSTRACT Cerebral Vascular Accident is determined as a clinical condition that occurs rapidly and progressively, caused by sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain. It distinguishes itself in Ischemic CVA and Hemorrhagic CVA. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of stroke survivors, assisted at a Basic Health Unit of the city of Capistrano-CE. It is a cross-sectional, observational, quantitative and qualitative study. Data collection was from January to May 2018. The instrument used was the Quality of Life Questionnaire - SF-36, in which each patient signed the Free and Informed Consent Term, as this work was approved by the ethics committee with the number: 2.698.166. The data were analyzed through the very method that the Questionnaire requires. The data took into account: age, over 60 years old (91%); sex, men most affected (55%); schooling, Incomplete Elementary School (50%); income, minimum wage of 63.6%, Ischemic CVA with 72.7% and Hemorrhagic CVA 27.3%. The 8 domains of the questionnaire were assessed and the average per domain was calculated: Functional Capacity = 16.8; Physical Limitation= 5.1; Pain = 57.6; General Health Status = 52.2; Vitality = 42.5; Social Aspects = 48.8; Emotional Limitation= 53.1; and Mental Health = 64.1. Regarding the questionnaire, it was observed that the domains with lower average were Functional Capacity and Limitation due to physical aspects resulting from the sequelae of CVA. It is concluded that due to the various limitations of these individuals, it is of utmost importance to develop strategies which aim at minimize the sequelae resulting from the disease.

Abstract Background: Infertility is an important health problem affecting the quality of life accompanied by significant emotional and psychological consequences. Infertile couples living with emotional disturbances face challenges with less success of infertility treatment. Purposes: This study aimed to investigate the quality of life of infertile couples who seek In-Vitro Fertilizations (IVFs) by gender in Gaza city, Palestinian. Methods and materials: A cross sectional study was conducted, from Feb 2018 to Nov 2018, among 383 infertile couples selected through convenient sampling. A valid and reliable Arabic version of the fertility quality of life questionnaire (FertiQoL) was used in data collection. One way ANOVA and independent t-test was applied to compare between males and females. P value less than 0.05% was considered statistical significance. Results: The mean age of males and females was 34.54±8.54 and 29.28±6.71 years respectively. More than half of them had university degree (64% and 60% respectively). The mean duration of infertility of couples was 5.66±3.54 years. The mean males' scores of FertiQoL and its subscales (emotion, mind/body, social, core, tolerability and treatment) were significantly higher than females' scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: The males' total scores of FertiQoL and its subscales were higher than females' scores. The mean total of FertiQoL increased with better education, however, decreased with increase of age, duration of marriage, duration of infertility and number of IVF attempts. Psychological assessment and Counseling are necessary for infertile women taking into considerations factors affecting their QoL.
