The experiment was conducted at Agroforestry Research Centre, of G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar to assess the effect of age (one and two year old), growing condition (intermittent misting and no misting) and different seasons (summer, monsoon, autumn and spring) on rooting and shooting of culm cuttings of Dendrocalamus asper. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications. The findings indicated that in D. asper, one year old culm cuttings in the intermittent misting condition showed good results. The findings also indicated that shooting and rooting per cent of culm cuttings planted in different season showed response as Spring (March)> Summer (June)> Monsoon (August)> Autumn (October).

Perlakuan ekstraksi dapat meningkatkan secara signifikan nilai keteguhan rekat internal papan partikel bambu petung, walaupun secara umum dengan jumlah asam sitrat 30% perlakuan tersebut tidak diperlukan pada papan partikel bambu Properties of Particleboard made from Petung Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and Wulung Bamboo (Gigantochloa atroviolacea) Particles with Extraction TreatmentAbstractBamboo has extractives, which the percentage of extractive was different based on bamboo species. This research aimed to investigate the effect of extraction treatment at different bamboo species on the particleboard properties. Two types of bamboo were used, i.e. Petung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) and Wulung bamboo (Gigantochloa atroviolacea). Three extraction treatments were conducted to the bamboo particles before the particleboard manufacture, i.e. unextracted, cold-water extraction, and hot-waterextraction. The particleboard was made in the size of 25 cm x 25 cm x 0.7 cm, target density of 0.9 g/cm³, citric acid content of 30%, and pressing temperature of 180°C for 10 min. The results showed that the interaction between extraction treatment and bamboo species significantly affected on the water absorption and internal bond strength, however bamboo species affected significantly on the moisture content, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity. All of particleboards could met the requirement of the 13 type of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) A 5908. In this research, particleboards made from wulung bamboo particles without extraction treatment have properties that met the requirement of the 18 type and the products have potential to be as exterior materials for furniture. In general, an extraction treatment was not an important step on the manufacturing of bamboo particleboard using citric acid 30% as adhesive. However, the extraction treatment could increase significantly the internal bond strength of particleboard made from petung bamboo.

In this study, quarternary ammonium salts based on triethylammonium and benzyltriethylammonium cations with the anion of chloride are successfully used for giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) preservation. These salts are new biocides as well as new salts which penetrate bamboo well. The prepared salts with hydrogen and benzyl substituent at the cation and consisted of chloride anion, exhibited fungicidal activity against Aspergillus Flavus. The effective and lethal doses were measured by the agar-plate method. In their activity against bamboo degrading fungi, salt of benzyl-triethyl-ammonium chloride was comparable with commercially available benzalkonium chloride and didecyldimethylammonium. Keywords: Triethylammonium, Benzyltriethylammonium, chloride, antifungal, and giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus Asper) and Aspergillus Flavus

Copper is a commonly used metal in construction, engineering, agriculture and water treatment. Consequently, increased copper concentrations resulting in adverse environmental effects is inevitable. Phytoremediation using Dendrocalamus asper or Philippine giant bamboo (PGB) is a viable option for treatment of copper-contaminated media, but their copper uptake potential remains largely unexplored. As such, the copper uptake of PGB was evaluated under varying environmental conditions, namely initial copper concentration, water hardness and pH.Six-month old propagules were planted in artificially contaminated water in order to determine the copper uptake after 16 days of treatment. Using a Box-Behnken design of experiment, it was found that both initial copper concentration and pH have significant and proportional effects on copper uptake. However, due to possible speciation and/or competition, the optimum copper uptake occurred at 20 ppm Cu and pH 5 (as opposed to 7). A mathematical equation, bearing an R2 = 0.7097, was constructed as a possible model for copper uptake of PGB to understand when PGB phytoremediation is most effective. At copper concentrations lower than 3.81 ppm, higher pH is beneficial to copper uptake and vice versa. Overall, phytoremediation using D. asper or PGB is effective especially at low pH and elevated copper concentrations.
