The criteria for «odontogenic sinusitis» (OS) with the highest values of specificity and sensitivity were identified. An integral odontogenicity sinusitis index (OSI) was developed based on the identified criteria. To measure the sensitivity and specificity of the criteria, a group of 261 patients was selected (113 women (43.29%), 148 men (56.70%), the average age of the patients was 36 years), consisting of 150 known to have OS and 111 patients who were known to be without OS. As a result of data analysis, the values of sensitivity and specificity were obtained for all 13 criteria. Based on the sensitivity and specificity values, all criteria were combined into an odontogenicity sinusitis index (OSI) and divided into «minor» and «major». The “large” criteria were assigned a significance point of 2, and for the “small” criteria, a significance point of 1. The determination of the odontogenic nature of sinusitis was carried out by a simple summation of the points assigned to patients during the survey, examination, and analysis of CT criteria. An odontogenic cause of sinusitis is recognized if there is a minimum of 4 points of significance, for example, one “large” (2 points) and two “small” (1 point each) criteria. The general sensitivity of the integral OSI index was 93%, the general specificity was 94%. These rates are high enough that OSI can be used to determine the «odontogenic» nature of sinusitis.

Abstract Background: A new assay measures prostate-specific antigen (PSA) not complexed to α1-antichymotrypsin (nACT-PSA) after removing PSA complexed to ACT by use of anti-ACT antibodies. We evaluated nACT-PSA and its ratio to total PSA (tPSA) as alternatives to free PSA (fPSA) and its ratio to tPSA in differentiating prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in patients with tPSA of 2–20 μg/L. Methods: PSA in serum of 183 untreated patients with PCa and 132 patients with BPH was measured retrospectively on the chemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer LIAISON® (Byk-Sangtec Diagnostica) with the LIAISON tPSA and LIAISON fPSA assays. The nACT-PSA fraction was determined with a prototype assay measuring the residual PSA after precipitation of ACT-PSA with an ACT-precipitating reagent. Results:nACT-PSA was higher than fPSA in samples with fPSA concentrations <1 μg/L but lower in samples with >1 μg/L fPSA. The median ratios of fPSA/tPSA and of nACT-PSA/tPSA were significantly different between patients with BPH and PCa (19.4% vs 12.2% and 17.4% vs 13.0%, respectively). Within the tPSA ranges tested (2–20, 2–10, and 4–10 μg/L), areas under the ROC curves for the fPSA/tPSA ratios were significantly larger than those for nACT-PSA/tPSA. In the tPSA ranges <10 μg/L, the areas under the ROC curves for fPSA/tPSA were significantly larger than those for tPSA, whereas the areas for nACT-PSA/tPSA were not. At decision limits for 95% sensitivity and specificity, both ratios significantly increased specificity and sensitivity, respectively, compared with tPSA, but the fPSA/tPSA ratio showed higher values. Conclusions: nACT-PSA and its ratio to tPSA provide lower diagnostic sensitivity and specificity than fPSA/tPSA. The fPSA/tPSA ratio represents the state-of-the-art method for differentiating between PCa and BPH.

The aim of the article is to the determination of transverse diameter and longitudinal axis in patients with cholecystitis and with the help of CT scan in the north Indian population for the estimation of epidemiology. Patients with cholecystitis and of ages between 17-80 years irrespective of gender were included in the study (cases). All patient's cases (100) and controls (100) were advised the night before that did not eat or drink. Control groups (Normal Gallbladder) were collected when patients are comprised of other abdominal disease diagnosed by computed tomography. The mean age of controls and cases was 47.24±11.57 and 45.20±16.22 years, respectively studied by computed tomography. More than half of cases (62%) and 50% of controls were females. The transverse diameter was significantly (p=0.0001) higher among cases (36.42±15.52 mm) than controls (24.12±9.11 mm) studied by computed tomography. Longitudinal axis was significantly (p=0.0001) higher among cases (33.23±14.73 mm) than controls (21.75±8.69) studied by computed tomography. Transverse diameter>25 correctly predicted cholecystitis and by CT in 38.5% cases with sensitivity and specificity of 77% (95%CI=68.8-85.2) and 74% (95%CI=55.7-74.3%) respectively. Longitudinal axis >25 correctly predicted cholecystitis and by CT in 34.5% cases with specificity and sensitivity of 69% (95%CI=59.9-78.1) and 71% (95%CI=62.1-79.9%) respectively. We concluded in this study, increased transverse diameter and longitudinal axis were observed. Good sensitivity and specificity of these two parameters were also found in predicting cholecystitis and by computed tomography. All such cases should be subjected to biopsy for examination to rule out the gallbladder carcinoma for better prognosis.

There is an increasing interest in the analysis of salivary biomarkers for medical practice. The objective of this article was to identify the specificity and sensitivity of quantification methods used in biosensors or portable devices for the determination of salivary cortisol and salivary a-amylase. There are no biosensors and portable devices for salivary amylase and cortisol that are used on a large scale in clinical studies. These devices would be useful in assessing more real-time psychological research in the future.

Musty odor has occurred annually in Lake Biwa since 1969. Osaka municipal waterworks, which is located downstream of Lake Biwa, has made many efforts to treat musty-odor compounds produced in Lake Biwa from spring through autumn. With the development of analytical methods for the determination of musty-odor compounds, we have been able to confirm that planktonic blue-green algae are the major causes of the musty-odor occurrences. The relationship between the growth of blue-green algae and the water quality was not so apparent. However, through our data analysis focusing on the relationship between musty-odor occurrences due to Phormidium tenue or Oscillatoria tenuis and some nutrients in Lake Biwa, we found that the concentration of nitrate in water may be an important parameter for the estimation of growth of the algae and the musty-odor behavior.

Identifying relevant data to support the automatic analysis of electroencephalograms (EEG) has become a challenge. Although there are many proposals to support the diagnosis of neurological pathologies, the current challenge is to improve the reliability of the tools to classify or detect abnormalities. In this study, we used an ensemble feature selection approach to integrate the advantages of several feature selection algorithms to improve the identification of the characteristics with high power of differentiation in the classification of normal and abnormal EEG signals. Discrimination was evaluated using several classifiers, i.e., decision tree, logistic regression, random forest, and Support Vecctor Machine (SVM); furthermore, performance was assessed by accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity metrics. The evaluation results showed that Ensemble Feature Selection (EFS) is a helpful tool to select relevant features from the EEGs. Thus, the stability calculated for the EFS method proposed was almost perfect in most of the cases evaluated. Moreover, the assessed classifiers evidenced that the models improved in performance when trained with the EFS approach’s features. In addition, the classifier of epileptiform events built using the features selected by the EFS method achieved an accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 97.64%, 96.78%, and 97.95%, respectively; finally, the stability of the EFS method evidenced a reliable subset of relevant features. Moreover, the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the EEG detector are equal to or greater than the values reported in the literature.

Thermal mapping has been implemented since the late eighties to establish the susceptibility of road networks to ice occurrence with measurements from a radiometer and some atmospheric parameters. They are usually done before dawn during wintertime when the road energy is dissipated. The objective of this study was to establish if an infrared camera could improve the determination of ice road susceptibility, to build a new winter risk index, to improve the measurements rate, and to analyze its consistency with seasons and infrastructures environment. Data analysis obtained from the conventional approved radiometer sensing technique and the infrared camera has shown great similarities. A comparison was made with promising perspectives. The measurement rate to analyse a given road network could be increased by a factor two.
