Multicriteria Optimization of Composite Wing of an Unmanned Aircraft

The article considers the results of multicriteria optimization of the unmanned aircraft composite wing. Minimum deflection, mass and normal stresses acting along the reinforcement directions are taken as optimization criteria. The thicknesses of the load-bearing frame elements and wing skin elements were selected as optimization parameters for three types of composites: carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) based on unidirectional carbon layers, CFRP based on carbon fabric layers, and fiberglass laminate based on E-glass fiberglass. A checking calculation of the optimal composite wing stability was performed using a geometrically nonlinear model. The calculation of the stress-strain state of the wing was performed using an anisotropic linear elastic material model. Calculations were carried out using finite element software packages ANSYS and FEMAP.

The classical Fo¨ppl equations, governing the deflection of plane membranes, constitute the first-order consistent approximation in the case of linear elastic material behavior. It is shown that despite the static and kinematic nonlinearities present, for arbitrary load histories a correspondence principle for viscoelastic material behavior exists if all relevant relaxation moduli are of uniform time dependence. Application of the principle is illustrated by means of a popular material model.

Abstract Based on hierarchic shape functions and an effective convergence procedure, the p-version and h-p adaptive analysis capabilities were incorporated into a finite element software system, called COSMOS/M. The range of the polynomial orders can be varied from 1 to 10 for two dimensional linear elastic analysis. In the h-p adaptive analysis process, a refined mesh are first achieved via adaptive h-refinement. The p-refinement is then added on to the h-version designed mesh by uniformly increasing the degree of the polynomials. Some numerical results computed by COSMOS/M are presented to illustrate the performance of these p and h-p analysis capabilities.

This paper describes a method for optimizing the design of a spar-type composite aircraft wing structure based on multi-criterion approach. Two types of composite wing structures such as two-spar and three-spar ones were considered. The optimal design of a wing frame was determined by the Pareto method basing on three criteria: minimal weight, minimal wing deflection, maximal safety factor and minimal weight. Positions of wing frame parts, i.e. spars and ribs, were considered as optimization parameters. As a result, an optimal design of a composite spar-type wing was proposed. All the calculations necessary to select the optimal structural and design of the spar composite wing were performed using nonlinear static finite element analysis in the FEMAP with NX Nastran software package.

This paper presents numerical simulation of blanking process for cold-rolled steel sheet metal. The problem was modeled using axial symmetry in commercial finite element software ADINA. Data obtained by experimental measurement were used to create multi-linear plastic material model for simulation. History of blanking force vs. tool displacement was obtained.

This paper describes a theoretical background, implementation and validation of the newly developed Jardine plastic hardening-softening model (JPHS model), which can be used for numerical modelling of the soils behaviour. Although the JPHS model is based on the elasto-plastic theory, like the Mohr-Coulomb model that is widely used in geotechnics, it contains some improvements, which removes the main disadvantages of the MC model. The presented model is coupled with an isotopically hardening and softening law, non-linear elastic stress-strain law, non-associated elasto-plastic material description and a cap yield surface. The validation of the model is done by comparing the numerical results with real measured data from the laboratory tests and by testing of the model on the real project of the tunnel excavation. The 3D numerical analysis is performed and the comparison between the JPHS, Mohr-Coulomb, Modified Cam-Clay, Hardening small strain model and monitoring in-situ data is done.

A novel approach is adopted to assess the static behavior of vaulted structures, such as cantilevered masonry stairs, assuming a linear elastic no-tension material model. Masonry is substituted by an equivalent orthotropic material whose elastic properties vary locally and with a negligible stiffness where tensile strain occurs. In order to recover a tension-free state of stress, an energy-based minimization procedure is carried out to establish the distribution and the orientation of the equivalent material for a given compatible load. The capability of the approach in defining purely compressive stress solutions in masonry walls under dead load and both in-plane and out-of-plane live loads has already been assessed. A meaningful application to a cantilevered masonry stair is here presented; the results are in good agreement with those available in the technical literature on historical masonry constructions.

Understanding the effect of thermomechanical loads during finish cutting processes, in our case hard milling, on the surface integrity of the workpiece is crucial for the creation of defined quality characteristics of high-performance components. Compared to computationally generated modifications by simulation, the measurement-based determination of material modifications can only be carried out selectively and on a point-by-point basis. In practice, however, detailed knowledge of the changes in material properties at arbitrary points of the high-performance component is of great interest. In this paper, a modification of the well-known Johnson–Cook material model using the finite element software Abaqus is presented. Special attention was paid to the kinematic hardening behavior of the used steel material. Cyclic loads are relevant for the chip formation simulation because, during milling, after each cut, the material under the surface is loaded plastically several times and not necessarily in the same direction. Therefore, in analogy, multiple bending was investigated on samples made of 42CrMo4. A pronounced Bauschinger effect was observed in the bending tests. An adaptation of the material model to the results of the bending tests was only possible to a limited extent without kinematic hardening, which is why the Johnson–Cook model was supplemented by the Armstrong–Frederick hardening approach. The modified Johnson–Cook–Armstrong–Frederick material model was developed for practical use as a VUMAT and verified by bending tests for simulation use.

A continuum-based microstructure-level material model for simulation of polycarbonate carbon nanotube (CNT) composite machining has been developed wherein polycarbonate and CNT phases are modeled separately. A parametrization scheme is developed to characterize the microstructure of composites having different loadings of carbon nanotubes. The Mulliken and Boyce constitutive model [2006, “Mechanics of the Rate Dependent Elastic Plastic Deformation of Glassy Polymers from Low to High Strair Rates,” Int. J. Solids Struct., 43(5), pp. 1331–1356] for polycarbonate has been modified and implemented to capture thermal effects. The CNT phase is modeled as a linear elastic material. Dynamic mechanical analyzer tests are conducted on the polycarbonate phase to capture the changes in material behavior with temperature and strain rate. Compression tests are performed over a wide range of strain rates for model validation. The model predictions for yield stress are seen to be within 10% of the experimental results for all the materials tested. The model is used to study the effect of weight fraction, length, and orientation of CNTs on the mechanical behavior of the composites.

The cold of this cardboard is to abstraction and analyze the amount accustomed accommodation and weight accumulation of blended aircraft (Aluminium Silicon Carbide) addition with that of Aluminium wing and appropriately access the acceptable aircraft addition of minimum weight accomplished of address a accustomed changeless amount after failure. And also this paper presents a model and a static analysis of the aircraft wing, using the finite element software ANSYS. The geometry was created in CATIA V5 R18 and imported. The static and model analysis are carried out in analysis software ANSYS. The result of from the static analysis refers to the total deformation, equivalent stress, shear stress and shear intensity on the skin of the aircraft wing. The model analysis will be carried out to find out the first six modes of vibrations and the different mode shape in which wing can deform without the application of load. Compared to the conventional Aluminium wing, the hybridized composite wing experience far lower stresses and the aircraft wing weight nearly 40% and 50% lower stress.
