From a private collection of palm leaf manuscripts the text Gaṇithagannaḍi has been unearthed and studied. The contents follow the traditional texts with all the chapters starting from the calculation of ahargaṇas to the predictions of eclipses. The text presents a unique method of calculation which the author, Viddaṇācārya, declares to be his own invention. In this paper, the procedures are described with the help of the elaborate commentary, written in Kannaḍa language, by Shankaranārāyaṇa Jōisaru of Sringeri.   This paper highlights the uniqueness of the procedure for calculating the ahargaṇa and the dhruvās for the positions of planets.

 Mathemagics or ‘Magic Maths’ consists of a series of non-conventional maths formulas that turn Mathematics into a fun subject and create innovative minds. The magical system could help steer the country towards a knowledge economy. The magic formulas, based on Ancient Indian Scriptures, were in use by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Intel Corporation, Microsoft, IBM and India, for its competitive exams preparations. The high speed mental mathematics could speed up math calculation by up to 1500 % and turn students into human bio-calculators. Mathemagics presents varieties of methods which can be used according to one’s needs in solving even the most difficult math problems. This is unlike the conventional system consisting of rigid, sometimes monotonous, procedures that are uniformly applied to all problems of a given type. The conventional method of calculation was not user – friendly with hardly any room for choice and experimentation. A seemingly difficult calculation like 998 x 997 can be solved in less than five seconds and even mentally. There is also a unique method to check the accuracy of answers to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, in keeping with the basic needs of students for faster calculations with 100 % accuracy. Innovation of the formula would make students become more confident and gain self – esteem while cultivating an interest for numbers and help eliminate math – phobia in them. The system also opens a new horizon for mathematics lovers as it presents a wider platform for experimentation in the subject. Besides, it promotes development of the right brain which governs the ability to solve complex calculations that require the use of visualization, photographic memory, speed reading and sub-conscious learning together with the left – brain that is employed by students for 90 % of subjects taught at school.

The unpublished seventeenth-century Kannaḍa-language mathematical work Gaṇitagannaḍi is transmitted in a single palm-leaf manuscript.  It was composed by Śaṅkaranārāyaṇa Jōisaru of Śṛṅgeri and is a karaṇa text cast as a commentary on the Vārṣikatantrasaṅgraha by Viddaṇācārya. Gaṇitagannaḍi's unique procedures for calculations wer introduced in an earlier paper in volume 8 (2020) of this journal.  In the present paper the procedures for calculations of the mean and true positions of planets are described.

Abstract: The rapid development of the number of islamic banks should be balanced with the availability of infrastructure to carry out daily operational practices. The operational tools include hardware as like as representative office, computerized system, reliable human resources and software as like as method, culture and financial and islamic banking knowledge. In terms of development of Islamic finance is the paper "Alternative Calculation of Return Shahibul Mal on Mudharabah Scheme on Bank Syariah" was written. During this calculation of return shahibul mal has not been standardized in a formula, thus causing two serious effects. First, in the theoretical level, the formula has not yet created a difficulty. Secondly, in practical level, the formula is not impressive enough to recalculate the complexity of return calculations obtained by shahibul mall, causing laziness of the community using the services of islamic bank. This paper using mathematical and arithmetic equations with the help of modeling made by the author to refine and improve the method of calculation that has been available. The purpose of this paper is to create a standard formula that facilitates the calculation of return earned by a shahibul mal in a mudaraba scheme in a islamic bank.

Underground spaces in town centres present a big attraction for investors. However, they put special requirements to the internal environment. Those requirements can be fulfilled by means of daylighting. Examples of lighting of underground spaces are discussed. It is shown that the common systems of natural lighting are not always possible to use and cause big heat losses. Hollow light guide pipes allow avoid the shortcomings of common daylight systems. Method of calculation of daylight factors from hollow light guide pipes is shown. The results of calculation of daylight factors under the light guide pipes of different diameters in the different depths are presented.

Most of the approximately 75 known eggs of the extinct great auk ( Pinguinus impennis) are in public museums, with a few in private collections. A small number of these eggs has sustained damage, either at the time of collection or subsequently, and two of these eggs are known to have been repaired. The two eggs suffered rather different types of damage and were subsequently restored using different techniques. The first, known as Bourman Labrey's egg, sustained extensive damage sometime prior to the 1840s, when the shell was broken into numerous pieces. This egg was repaired by William Yarrell in the 1840s, and when it was restored again in 2018, it was discovered that Yarrell's restoration had involved the use of an elaborate cardboard armature. This egg is currently in a private collection. The second egg, known as the Scarborough egg, bequeathed to the Scarborough Museum in 1877, was damaged (by unknown causes) and repaired, probably by the then curator at Scarborough, W. J. Clarke, in 1906. This egg was damaged when one or more pieces were broken adjacent to the blowhole at the narrow end (where there was some pre-existing damage). The media reports at the time exaggerated the extent of the damage, suggesting that the egg was broken almost in two. Possible reasons for this exaggeration are discussed. Recent examination using a black light and ultraviolet (UV) revealed that the eggshell had once borne the words, “a Penguin's Egg”, that were subsequently removed by scraping.

Roberto Massimo Lawley (1818–1881) was a non-academic naturalist who made a major contribution to the Tuscan scientific community of his time. He was involved in the foundation of two societies (Società Italiana di Malacologia, 1874–1899; Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali, 1874–today) and a publishing house (Biblioteca Malacologica Italiana). He first devoted himself to malacology, but Neogene fossil fishes became his main interest. Over the years, he gathered a huge private collection of fossils and produced 18 scientific papers, dealing mainly with fossil sharks. Subsequent revisers criticized his approach to fossil taxa: their observations were generally sound, but they failed to fully recognize Lawley's scientific merits. His scientific papers, new taxa established by him and eponymys are given in the Appendix.
