These works turn to literary works whose fictional narrative space articulates with the subjectivity of human experience, composing the existential landscape bearing meanings of what the human being experiences and is as being-in-the-world. This is a phenomenological perspective of approach to literary space that brings Literature closer to areas of knowledge with which it has not traditionally spoken, such as Cultural Humanist Geography. In the rationale, the theoretical contributions of Morin (2005), Santos (2010), Fazenda (1994, 2008), Tuan (2012; 2013), Dardel (2015), Relph (2014), Marandola Jr; Gratão (2010), among others. This is a qualitative, bibliographical and analytical research. As a result, the viability of the interdisciplinary approach between literary art and geographic science in the humanist field can be evidenced, and that such practice extends the analytical perspective of literary texts by fostering readings from the aesthetic constitution of works in articulation with the human experiences of space and place, which represents an enrichment to the academic formation of scholars and a significant contribution to their performance as researchers and as teachers. Keywords: Interdisciplinarity. Starting with the definition of style by K.A. Dolinin, the article proposes to reflect on the perspectives of an interdisciplinary approach to stylistic research, using primarily the achievements of psychology and philosophy, as the style of a literary work is the result of the subject’s choices, which in turn result from his/her individual way of thinking. The interdisciplinary approach will also allow for more effective aesthetic assessment of the work. The article analyses three literary texts based on memories: The childhood years of Bagrov-grandson, serving as a continuation of the Family Chronicle by S.T. Aksakov, The Life of Arsenyev by I.A. Bunin and Be Like Children by V.A. Sharov. On the example of language constructions forming the concept of MEMORY, the researcher shows the factors that influence the choice of language means that ultimately create the individual style of the author. The study proves that this choice is influenced by non-linguistic factors: the situational context, era, the author’s professional and personal experience and education, philosophicaland aesthetic ideas, and other important circumstances that guide the artist’s thinking. Genre rules and current tastes are also of importance. The study shows that the ratio of the number of language constructions regarding experience memory and information memory can characterize the individual style of a given author. It also proves that a broader interdisciplinary view of style allows to see more determinants of the aesthetic value of a work. Among them are: the harmonious structure of the text including its spatial and temporal organization, and the compliance with the broadly understood norm that involves not only the linguistic but also the mental layer of the text, as expressed by appropriately selected means.

Formal preoccupations, which is to say specifically literary concerns, appear in small literatures only in a second phase, when an initial stock of literary resources has been accumulated and the first international artists find themselves in a position to challenge the aesthetic assumptions associated with realism and to exploit the revolutionary advances achieved at the Greenwich meridian.—Pascale Casanova, The World Republic of Letters“In our country culture has become so complex, this complexity is reflected in our literature. It takes a certain level of education to understand our novelists. The ordinary man cannot understand them …” … And she reeled off a list of authors, smiling smugly. It never occurred to her that these authors had ceased to be of any value whatsoever to their society—or was it really true that an extreme height of culture and the incomprehensible went hand in hand?—Bessie Head, A Question of Power (first ellipsis in orig.)ON WHAT BASIS ARE SELECT TRADITIONS OF LITERARY INTERNATIONALISM RECOGNIZED AS WORLD LITERATURE AND OTHERS DEEMED MERELY historical, relics of nostalgic Marxism or of resolved debates on aesthetics and politics? According to recent influential formulations, world literature is writing that in original or translated form circulates outside the author's country of origin. But what of traditions of literary internationalism, like those of working-class writing, that reverse and displace practical, utilitarian propositions to ask, instead, in more abstract terms, what is the use value of the literary? Bessie Head's A Question of Power poses a challenge to practical definitions. What of literary texts that have global currency but aren't of “any value whatsoever to their society”?

What happens when we imagine the sonic worlds of literary texts, when we focus on voice in film, or when we study the sound of social protest? How can we integrate sound studies into our academic practices? How does sound relate to space and place? How can American studies scholars understand the link between sonic and social relations? Music, voices, noise, and silence are constitutive elements of phenomena that we as American studies scholars regularly investigate. However, in contrast to the well-established prominence of visual culture studies, sound features less prominently in our field's research—an oversight (pardon the pun!) this issue of JAAAS seeks to remedy.

Abstract The basis of the connection between analytic philosophy and architecture theory was developed in the interwar period. The results of analytic philosophy – especially the neo-positivism of Vienna Circle – and modern, functionalist architecture theory were utilized in an interdisciplinary approach. The comparison was based on language puzzles, science-based building processes, the method of justification and verification, and designing an artificial language in order to express the theoretical (philosophical) and the practical (architectural) approach as well. The functionality was based on the modern way of architectural thinking that relied on the results of Carnapian neo-positivism. Interpreting modern architecture is possible by referring to the keywords of logical positivism: empiricism, logic, verification, unity of language, and science. In my paper, I first list the bases of the comparison between the philosophy of the Vienna Circle and the architecture theory of the interwar period – the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. In the 2nd and 3rd sections, I show the dialectical succession between form and function. After that, I discuss the aesthetic verification of the turn of the century and the scientific justification of the interwar period. I focus on the interwar period with the positivist approach and the theory of the ‘new architecture’. I emphasize the importance of the language of science and the machine paradigm – in contrast to historicism.

In this article, existential sentences are examined as a syntactic dominant of I. A. Bunin’s lyrical poetry. The interest in the originality of the syntax of Nobel laureate’s literary texts is due to the lack of research on this issue, linguists’ focus on the aesthetic salience of the vocabulary, its expressive properties and combination potential, as well as stylistic figures and tropes. Meanwhile, it is the writer’s selection of specific syntactic structures for the implementation of the idea, the representation of key ideas and concepts that reflect his personality and the peculiarities of his perception of the surrounding world. The author refers to Bunin’s poems from 1886–1917 and 1918–1953 published in Bunin’s collected works in 9 volumes. In the writer’s poetic oeuvre, existential sentences are regularly used. Despite the traditional structure that underlies them and is represented by three meanings (‘the object of being’, ‘being’, and ‘area of being’), the richness of the lexical content of each of the main components stands out. As a result, existential sentences become a universal form used to represent completely different situations in the author’s individual worldview: the existence of natural objects in space, meteorological phenomena, events, time periods, artifacts, etc.; physical states of the surrounding world; psychological states of the subject. Acting as a semantic core of a poetic text, existential sentences do not have a fixed place in it, and are used as a lyrical beginning, an interposed element, or an ending in its structure. In each position, their use is conceptually significant. It is established that the peculiarity of existential sentences in Bunin’s lyrical poetry is their syntactic unconditionality (attachment to three registers of speech, i.e. reproductive, informative, and generative) and polyfunctionality (performing the pictorial, characterising and concluding, and generalising functions).

This article identifies a body of work—films, literary texts, and theories of the aesthetic—that can help us reopen the question of what it means for an artwork to project a vision of classlessness. The article begins by focusing on early-twentieth-century proletarian modernism, in particular in the cinematic work of Sergey Eisenstein and in British literary works that repurposed Woolfian and Joycean styles during the later interwar years. Proletarian modernism, I argue, highlights an alternative route taken by modernist literature and art: unlike the late modernists feted in much recent scholarship, proletarian modernists aimed to retool modernism, opening up new and global political futures for it rather than anticipating its end. The article concludes by showing that the cultural genealogy of proletarian modernism mapped out here doubles as a prehistory of contemporary aesthetic theory: it enables us to recognize the significant political and theoretical erasures that structure recent accounts of art's democratic potential.

During the last few decades most landscape archaeologists have noted the diffusion and the demographic importance of the rural landscapes of Archaic Etruscan communities and have tried to define their significance within Etruscan society in the same way as others have attempted to evaluate the political significance of the Greek rural landscape. Recent research on Italian landscapes has led to a great increase in the available data regarding the different paths of development for the various communities, allowing them to be outlined and compared. The growing dichotomy between the studies of field archaeologists and historians or art-historians may appear to be a problem. Landscape studies in Italy have been dominated since the 1950s by an Anglocentric tradition of economic and environmental archaeology, with important work focusing on long-term phenomena. Historians and art-historians, on the other hand, have tried to define an interdisciplinary approach involving the use of several sources of evidence (art-historical, epigraphic, literary) and focusing on historical events and medium-or short-term phenomena. Yet field and historical archaeology are simply two sides of the same coin, and should be viewed as complementary rather than incompatible approaches to understanding the comolex evidence of the Dre-Roman cultures.

The change of literary texts for the subject of Malay Literature i n schools brings with it the hope that the text chosen is one of “quality” in order to successfully reach the aims of the National Education Policy. This article is an analysis of the novel Jeriji Kasih (The Confines of Love) which supposedly is written with “an interesting story-telling technique” and is said to be able to impart “knowledge” as well as to shape students into people conscious of goodness, truth and a refined character. The analysis is based on the locally- developed framework of Genuine Literature ( Persuratan Baru ) which aims to examine the extent to which both these claims are true. The main idea in Genuine Literature is the emphasis on “knowledge” as opposed to “narrative”. This analysis shows how the text shapes a “narrative axis” and comes together in a “narrative space”. The analysis of this text also shows that the “narrative space” has been occupied with the “contents of the narrative” through the manipulation of a number of elements such as character and plot. This analysis reveals that the “knowledge” claimed to be contained in this text diverges from the idea of “knowledge” as put forth by Genuine Literature. Keywords: Genuine Literature, narrative axis, narrative space, knowledge, narrative

This study presents a critical approach to the poetic aspects of Qassim Haddad’s texts (Oh coal, my master) in his rewritings of Van Gogh's life. The importance of the study lies in the new experience of the text as Qassim has provided a distinguished artistic style where he presented the biography of the Dutch artist based on the heterobiography logic. He explored the artist’s paintings which reflected his attitudes towards life and art and invested in the content of his massages. The attractiveness of this topic is the reason for conducting the study as the poet Qassim Hadadd was able to explore deeply Van Gogh's ideas and consequently presented to us a biography of an exceedingly beautiful poetic style that presented his reading of the paintings and messages. Furthermore, texts are written in an elegant poetic language and are rich in color interpretations. The study adopts the Artistic Analytical approach that analyzed the figurative expressions of colors that have poetic connotations different from their denotative meanings which led to appreciate the aesthetic aspects of such literary texts.
