The authors carried out modeling of the electrophysical properties of composite media. The frequency dependences of the dielectric constant on the type of inclusions in the composite are investigated. On the basis of the nanocomposite considered in the work, based on Si, B, and SiO2, the authors model a reflecting screen, the lattice elements of which have a layered hierarchically constructed structure similar to a fractal formation. The influence of the level of fractality on the optical properties of the object was also investigated, and it was found that the proposed structure makes it possible to increase the operating frequency range of the reflecting screen and the efficiency, in comparison with reflecting screens that have a lattice of traditional structure. The results obtained can be of practical interest for broadband and nonlinear radar devices, localization devices and mobile objects, microelectronics, as well as intelligent applications in the field of information security.

Studies on the Ammatowa indigenous people have been carried out by several researchers. Unfortunately, none of these studies have focused on the role and position of women in the Ammatowa people, both in their daily lives and in regard  to education. Therefore, this study fills that void. This study aims to identify the position and role of women in the life of the Ammatowa people; what specific roles are performed by women in customary areas; and how the traditions are still firmly held provide space for women to express themselves. As a study of a unique community, this study uses an ethnographic approach, by collecting, classifying, and analyzing the various positions of women in the Ammatowa Kajang community. In the traditional structure of Tana Towa, women have an important, strategic and respected position. In the structure of these customs, there is an important role played by a woman called Angrota who has the task and responsibility of preparing all the needs for traditional ceremonies, facilitating the selection of Ammatowa and inaugurating them. In the economic aspect, women have an important role in supporting the family’s financial, such as weaving, selling in the market, and farming. Meanwhile, education for Tana Towa women is still a major issue that needs serious attention. It is because the education world is related to issues of customs, and the family economy.

The third issue of the theological almanac “Buddhist Studies” was published in December 2020 under the Institute of Mongolian, Buddhist, and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The issue retains the traditional structure of the annual book, which covers the problems of philosophy and soteriology, history of Buddhism, its historiography, translations of Buddhist texts, and other aspects of Buddhist teaching, as well as noteworthy events in life of the Institute and Buddhology overall. The peer review covers the central scientific problems, which manifest as the subject of research in the almanac and their importance for modern Buddhology. Brief analysis is conducted on the content of the journal and the fundamental theoretical problems brought up therein. It is indicated that Buddhism, as the world religion and philosophy, is oriented towards the formation of spiritual personality, traditional moral-ethical values, such as compassion, mercy, tolerance, peacefulness, etc. Such personality model deeply contrasts with the selfish consumer personality that is oriented towards wealth and sensual pleasure formed by the modern liberal-capitalist system. As a result of escalating moral-ethical crisis that takes place in modern society, and search for the ways to overcome it, attention of the researchers is drawn to the traditional spiritual teachings; therefore, Buddhology plays an important role in promoting the traditional spiritual values and countering the modern all-round crisis of the liberal model.

PurposeThe vulnerability of worn-out textures in the face of natural disasters is one of the most significant challenges that have forced planners and urban managers to intervene in these structures. In this context, the new-urbanism, or the new urbanization, movement is one of the most novel approaches. This paper aims to organizing one of the worn-out neighborhoods in Rudsar, northern Iran with an approach toward the new urbanism.Design/methodology/approachThe procedure adopted in this research is a combination of both quantitative and qualitative practices with an applied approach. Therefore, through utilizing the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and space syntax methods, the principles of the new urbanism are examined using the Expert Choice and Depthmap software. Subsequently, the appropriate priorities are mentioned for organizing the neighborhood with the new-urbanism approach using the building information system (BIM) and strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) techniques.FindingsThe findings of this study indicate that among the main characteristics of the new urbanism, walkability is recognized as the most important factor. Afterward, the components of maintaining the traditional structure of neighborhoods and connectivity were in the second and third ranks, respectively, of importance. Accordingly, by identifying the societal potential of roads according to their spatial configuration, it is possible to boost walkability, as well as economic prosperity in these areas.Originality/valueThe combination and correlation of the four utilized methods in this research can be adopted in the future studies as a new outlook of the mixed methods in the field of urban studies.

Abstract The impedance matching of ultrasonic focusing spherical transducer is one of the primary factors affecting its work efficiency in ultrasonic focusing flow polishing system. To realize the efficient utilization of the vibration energy of the transducer, there are different requirements for the front and rear matching structure of the transducer. That is, the front matching structure should have high transmittance, and the rear matching structure should have high reflectivity. Based on the acoustic impedance matching theory and Kirchhoff's theory, the Influence of the front & back impedance matching structure of spherical focusing ultrasonic transducer to the focus sound pressure is studied theoretically and experimentally. The new matching structure for spherical focusing transducer is proposed based on above research. The experimental result shows that the focus sonic pressure with the new matching structure is increased by 72.03% compared with the traditional structure.

This paper presents the application and the development of foam concrete (FC) to replace the traditionally used subgraded materials (typically compacted soil or granular earth rock) in high-speed railway by using cement to sand ratio of 2:1 with a target density of 500 to 700 kg/m3 and by adding polypropylene (PP) fibers with 0.25% and 0.40% by volume to improve the properties of FC. The mechanical properties were evaluated and tested in the laboratory in accordance with ASTM standard method, including compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio, and dynamic strength. In addition, the numerical model investigates the performance and analyzes the effect of applying the full cross-section PP fiber reinforced FC in slab ballastless track, under different thicknesses, on the dynamic response of the whole structure, and then compares them with that of the traditional structure. The results indicate that the strength of FC with a density of 500 to 700 kg/m3 can meet the requirements of static and dynamic loading conditions of railway earth structure. But the density of 600 to 700 kg/m3 shows good strength stability under different curing states. In addition, adding 0.25% PP fiber is an optimal volume that can significantly improve mechanical properties. The prediction of the model shows that FC at a density of 600 kg/m3 by adding PP fibers of 0.25% at a thickness of 1.5 m can reduce the stress and vibration of the track structure better than that of the traditional structure; this indicates a long-term maintainance stability of the subgrade bed.

The traditional structure of the upper structure of the track on the main railways of Ukraine in curved sections with a radius of less than 350 m is a link structure of the track with wooden sleepers. This track design is not rational under current operating conditions. The use of a more advanced jointless track design in curves with a radius of less than 350 m is limited primarily by the condition of ensuring the transverse stability of the rail-sleeper lattice. To be able to expand the use of jointless track construction in curved sections with a radius of less than 350 m, it is necessary to know the values of the transverse forces of interaction of the structures of the upper track structure with the moving carriage. Knowing the forces of interaction, it is possible to estimate by what value the transverse stability of the rail-sleeper lattice will be provided and to make constructive decisions on its increase. The method of determination of transverse horizontal forces of interaction of track and moving carriage in curves of radius less than 350 m taking into account quasi-static compressive forces in a train is given. The reasons for these forces are related to the presence of eccentricity of the autoclutch shank in the horizontal and vertical planes. Theoretical calculations of horizontal transverse forces of interaction are carried out according to the given technique and coefficients of stability of a rail-sleeper lattice in curved sites are defined. The main conclusions concerning the possibility of operation of the jointless track structure in curved sections with a radius of 350 m and less are made.

AbstractThe traditional structure of medical school curriculum in the United States consists of 2 years of pre-clinical study followed by 2 years of clinical rotations. In this essay, I propose that this curricular approach stems from the understanding that medicine is both a science, or a body of knowledge, as well as an art, or a craft that is practiced. I then argue that this distinction between science and art is also relevant to the field of medical ethics, and that this should be reflected in ethics curriculum in medical education. I introduce and argue for virtue ethics as the best opportunity for introducing practical ethical knowledge to medical trainees.

This article attempts to use emotion as the core concept to explore the historical pedigree of China. Chinese culture has always attached great importance to emotion. Traditional Chinese rule was highly dependent on notions of human kindness and compassion. Since the encounter with the Western world, the Chinese revolution gave birth to a unique emotional mode, and this had a great impact on the Chinese society. Contemporary China bid farewell to the revolution and started its market-oriented reforms. An emotional mode of consumerism has become the dominant one. Based on Raymond Williams’s theory of structure of feeling, this article divides the emotional patterns in Chinese history into the traditional structure of feeling, the revolutionary structure of feeling and the consumerist structure of feeling. This does not mean a simplified analysis of history and its complex emotional patterns, but an attempt to explore the complex interaction and social consequences of these models.
