Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the role of slack (both moderating and mediating) to stimulate the relationship between total quality management (TQM) factors and innovation outcomes relative to gaining competitive industry advantages. Design/methodology/approach The research methodology includes a multi-item scale questionnaire completed in three waves between 2016 and 2017, and later analysed in 2018. A final response rate of 29.5 per cent was obtained, representing 190 organisations from both manufacturing and service industries in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to test the multi-collinearity, moderation and mediation analysis. Findings Analysis confirmed that factors such as continuous improvement (CI), human resource management (HRM) and information measurement (IM) were positively linked to innovation. However, when slack was introduced as a moderator, innovation outcomes were stimulated through HRM and IM. The results indicate that slack acts as a full mediator for management leadership but only partially mediates supplier quality, IM, CI, HRM and process management. Research limitations/implications In terms of geographical coverage, research was limited to the UAE. Organisations striving for excellence through innovation may benefit from the outcomes, as they help in understanding the relationship between TQM and innovation moderated and/or mediated by slack. This could also lead businesses to develop new strategies that harmonise TQM policies with “rationale” slack policies, thus, promoting innovation. Originality/value This study is the first to examine the use of slack to stimulate the relationship between TQM factors and innovation outcomes. Using slack as a mediator can help in understanding when TQM might influence innovation, while slack as a moderator could invert the relationship between the two.

This paper is made to present a Total Quality Management (TQM) Model for Healthcare Industry for Indonesia. From previous study, there are nine Total Quality Management (TQM) practices in healthcare industry such as Top Management Commitment (TMC), Teamwork and Participation (TWP), Process Management (PM), Customer Focus and Satisfaction (CFS), Resource Management (RM), Organizational Behavior and Culture (OBC), Continuous Improvement (CI), Training and Education (TE) and Information Management (IM) . However, these practices are not integrated yet. Therefore, this paper aims to integrate these practices by applying Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). After administering about 200 questionnaires using Linear Structural Relations (LISREL) program, the p-value is at 0.45 above required 0.05 giving the meaning that the model is good fit. This signifies that these nine TQM practices are required to achieve goals of the industry

Total Quality Management (TQM) is a method of organizational improvement that is quite widely used in the world. Unfortunately, there are still many failures in its implementation, especially in Indonesia, for many reasons. The aim of this study was to determine the readiness of organizations and individuals in implementing TQM and its influence on the quality performance in Indonesia's manufacturing industries. The sample of this research consisted of 48 employees from about 20 privately owned companies at Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) areas, Indonesia. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires, followed by statistical analysis with Structural Equation Modelling using Partial least squares (PLS) method. The results of this study indicated that, within the sector, the individual and organizational readiness in implementing TQM, as well as their quality performance, was found to be at a good level. Furthermore, the level of individual and organizational readiness in implementing TQM showed a significant effect on the quality performance, with the significance levels of 84% and more than 99%, respectively. Accordingly, 43% variation on quality performance was influenced by the individual and organizational readiness in implementing TQM, and the rest (57%) was influenced by other factors.

Background: The quality of management has become a problem and significant issue of the late decade in Indonesia's professional nursing practice. By implementing total quality management (TQM), the organization would identify a health organization system's performance to improve patient satisfaction and patient safety for independent nursing practice services. Objective: This study aimed to assess the quality of independent nursing practice in Indonesia based on TQM indicators. Methods: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods design. Participants were 105 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of independent nursing practices who answered a TQM survey using The Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence (MBCfPE). The quantitative responses were analyzed using SmartPLS version 3.0. For qualitative data, selected six participants from total respondents were interviewed to explore the participants' understanding of TQM. All the responses were transcribed and uploaded using NVIVO ver. 11 for thematic analysis. Results: Leadership positively influenced strategic planning, customer attention, assessment analysis, and information management (focusing on personnel process management and efficiency) (p <0.001). In addition, process management indicated a positive influence on performance results (p <0.001). Interview transcriptions concentrated on the following themes that emerged, such as quality focus, service focus, human resource focus, performance result, leadership, service system design, strategic planning, and information system. Conclusion: TQM with the adaptation of MBCfPE criteria improves the organization's performance and serves as a strategic component in assessing and implementing sustainability change. The findings of this study can be used by CEOs of independent nursing practices for continuous improvement. In addition, the results serve as a basis for the ministry of health for accreditation to ensure the high quality of health care services.

This empirical study examines the association of TQM practices (i.e. leadership, customer focus, strategic planning, people management, information analysis and process management) with the innovation performance as perceived by the managers in Malaysia. The research model is constructed on the basis of established theory and on well-known criteria such as Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Six hypotheses are formulated and tested by multiple regression based on a sample of 206 managers working in the ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturing firms in Malaysia. The results of this study show that TQM has a significant positive relationship with innovation performance. In particular, the findings of this study show that process management, strategic planning, people management and customer focus have positive relationships with innovation performance of firms surveyed in Malaysia. Therefore, both researchers and practitioners are advised to consider these relevant TQM practices when assessing the innovation performance of an organization. Implications for managers and researchers, as well as study limitations are also discussed.
