The year 2021 is marked by the 175-th anniversary of the birth of Anna Egorovna and Vasiliy Vasilievich Dokuchaevs. This is a wonderful occasion to recall an amazing and remarkably modest woman who played an important role in the life and work of the great Russian natural scientist, the founder of genetic soil science. If many works were written about her outstanding world-wide known husband, films were made, pictures were created, his photos are preserved, then the life of his wife is undeservingly poorly described, and the appearance of this very beautiful woman is depicted in the only one famous portrait. This article, dedicated to the memory of Anna Egorovna Dokuchaeva, is based on both the quotations from the already published memoirs of the follower and the friend of V.V. Dokuchaev – Franz Yulievich Levinson-Lessing, and the excerpts from Anna Egorovna’s letters to Varvara Ippolitovna – the wife of F.Yu. Levinson-Lessing. These letters were collected from the archives of the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and copied by the employee of the V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute – Sergey Petrovich Lyalin – in the 1980s, and they are now kindly provided by the Central Soil Museum by V.V. Dokuchaev (the Branch of the Federal Research Centre “V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute” in St. Petersburg).

The world-class geologist and petrographer - Frants Yul’evich Levinson-Lessing (1861-1939) was one of the followers and apprentices of V.V. Dokuchaev, the founder of the Soil Science. In 1882-1892 he took part in Dokuchaev’s expeditions. Thereafter, Levinson -Lessing carried out research in the field of petrography; he assumed various administrative positions and constantly lent support to his teacher’s life-work. He was the chairman of the Soil Commission of the Russian Free Economic Society (1905-1912), one of the founders of Dokuchaev Soil Committee and its council member (1912-1916), headed Soil Science Department and Soil Science Institute of the Commission on Natural Production Forces affiliated with Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1917-1925), V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute (1926-1929). In 1927 in cooperation with V.I. Vernadskiy and K.D. Glinka he gained recognition of the Soil Science as a fundamental science in Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which resulted in establishment of special Soil Science Institute of Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Fruiting is an important characteristic of plant adaptation to new growing conditions. This is especially actual for ornamental plants, which, after successful introduction, can be used in landscaping of settlements. The genus Syringa L. has about 30 species, many of which can replenish the range of ornamental plants in the region. The collection of lilacs of the South Ural Botanical Garden-Institute of the UFIC RAS (Ufa Federal Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences) currently contains 11 species that have reached a generative state. The aim of this research is to identify the features of fruiting species of the genus Syringa during introduction in the conditions of the Bashkir Cis-Urals. The fruiting level of lilac species in the collection of the Botanical Garden was studied by determining the total number of fruits of the mother bushes. It is revealed that the fruiting level of introduced species of lilac is determined by the biological (hereditary) characteristics of the species and seasonal changes of weather conditions. S. velutina is characterized by the highest fruiting level, S. vulgaris and S. wolfii – by the lowest ones. It is assumed that there might be a tendency for dependence of the degree of fruiting on the quality of the formed pollen. Two taxa among all studied ones demonstrate fruiting level instability: S. reticulata ssp. reticulata blooms and bears fruit irregularly, while S. reticulata ssp. amurensis has regular abundant flowering, but there is a lack of fruiting in some years.

The paper deals with topical issues of biologization of introduced and selective studies, which represent new approaches to conservation and rational use of plant resources. An extensive gene pool of subtropical, flower and southern fruit crops has been mobilized at FRC SSC of RAS (Sochi). Bioresource collections include 2,650 cultivar samples, of which 20% are perennial herbaceous plants, 12% are bulbous and bulbotuberiferous, 11% are tree and shrub crops, 10 % are irises, 8 % are pelargoniums, 5 % are citrus crops and others. Based on the collections studies, adaptive assortments have been developed for the humid subtropics of the Russian Federation, research is continuing for a number of cultures. A special place in the Centre’s research is occupied by the study of the collected species of natural flora, most of which have unique, including decorative, medicinal and other properties. The collections are the basis for conducting breeding research in various areas. Over the past 10 years, 85 cultivars of flower crops have been created (including 36 pelargoniums, 13 fruit crops, 4 hazels and 1 tea plant).

The article provides information inderlining the necessity of conducting seismological monitoring in North Ossetia, as one of the earthquake-prone regions of the Russian Federation. Describes the sources, creation, stages of development of the seismological service, participation of well-known scientists in the fi eld of geophysical studies. A brief analysis of the technical and technological state of the seismological network is given, the importance and the need of further development of the NOB FRC GS RAS network within the Federal System of Seismological Observations.

The article considers the biologization of plum trees protection system from shot hole disease caused by the phytopathogenic fungus Wilsonomyces carpophilus in the humid subtropics of the Krasnodar region. Several biological fungicides based on different strains of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis (Alirin-B®, Bactophyt®, Gamair®, Phytosporin-M®, Vitaplan®), the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens (Rhizoplan®) and the fungus Trichoderma harzianum (Glyocladin® and Trichocin®) were tested on Stanley plum trees at the experimental base of the Federal Research Centre the Subtropical Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Sochi) in 2015–2017. According to seasonal features of shot hole disease and the results of experiments, the optimal timetable schedule for plum treatment with the fungicides was found (3 treatments in May–June).
