The isotopic composition of carbon and oxygen of 165 samples of carbonate rocks of genetically different organogenic structures: the Upper Ordovician Bol'shaya Kos'yu reef, the Upper Devonian Shar'yu microbial mound, the Kozhym skeletal mound, the Upper Miocene Kazantip bioherm complex and deep-water organogenic-carbonate structures of the north of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was studied. The reef and microbial mound are characterized by δ 13СPDB values within the limits close to normal-sedimentary marine carbonates (–0.33—3.13 ‰) and (0.8—3.0 ‰), but with significant variations in δ 18ОSMOW — (22.24—30.0 ‰) and (20.4—26.3 ‰), respectively. The most isotopically-heavy carbon composition (5.1—7.3 ‰) in combination with varying δ 18ОSMOWvalues (22.4— 30.0 ‰) is characteristic of limestones and brachiopods of the skeletal mound. Fluctuations of δ 13СPDB and δ 18ОSMOW values in carbonate rocks of the Kazantip bioherm complex are the most expressive (–2.76—7.17 ‰) and (24.20—33.1 ‰), respectively. Deepwater organogenic structures from the bottom of the axial zone with active volcanism, in contrast to others, showed stable δ 13СPDB values (–0.98—0.83 ‰) within the area of normal-sedimentary marine carbonates, whereas for oxygen the values are istopic-heavy (32.27—39.75 ‰). As a result, the specificity of the development of the objects under study, established by lithological-paleoecological and chemical-physical methods, found its substantiation in isotopic values, paleosalinity and paleotemperatures caused by paleogeographic and climatic conditions.

Results from 27 dredge hauls (75 samples) spaced from 150 km west to 70 km east of the Median Valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at about 45 °N are reported. Basalt is the most common rock type. The basalts have a mean remanent intensity of 92 × 10−4 and a mean susceptibility of 0.9 × 10−4 cgs cm−3. The remanence varies with distance from the axis, samples from the Median Valley (mean 574 × 10−4) being ten times more magnetic than samples at a greater distance. Most of this decrease of intensity occurs within a few kilometers (less than 6 km) of the central axis and within the zone of active volcanism. It is suggested that this dramatic drop in intensity is caused by viscous decay enhanced by thermal cycling or by chemical change in the narrow volcanic axial zone.Certain other properties of the basalts vary with distance; the blocking temperatures and stability (versus a.f. demagnetization) increase, and the ratio FeO/Fe2O3 decreases with distance. These changes are most marked at the inner slopes of the Crestal Mountains not within the narrow axial zone, and it is possible that they reflect sampling bias, the samples from the Median Valley being from flow margins, whereas the collections from the flanks contain material from the centers of flows.Non-basaltic rocks include serpentinized peridotite, greenstone, gabbro, and diabase. Serpentinized peridotite samples are strongly magnetic and have a mean intensity of 23 × 10−4 cgs cm−3. Greenstones, gabbros, and diabases are weakly magnetized, with mean intensities of about 10−4. Moreover, basalt showing partial alteration to greenstone has intermediate intensities showing that such a metamorphic process effectively demagnetizes a rock. This result is more consistent with the idea that Layer 3 is composed predominantly of gabbro and metamorphosed basalt rather than of serpentinized peridotite. The remanence and susceptibilities of 18 "erratic" samples, which are thought from other evidence to have been deposited by Pleistocene icebergs, have a wide and irregular spread.

A new lithostratigraphic scheme is erected for the uppermost Ordovician and lower Silurian shelf carbonate rocks of Peary Land and Kronprins Christian Land, eastern North Greenland. All carbonate rocks were deposited on a fairly stable shelf which was bordered to the north and east by deep-water basins. The shelf foundered in the latest LIandoverian, terminating carbonate production. Five formations and two members are defined and extend from the uppermost Ordovician (Cincinnatian) to the uppermost LIandoverian, or possibly lowermost Wenlock in the Silurian. Lithostratigraphic units include: Turesø Formation (new) composed of alternating light and dark grey peritidal to shallow subtidal laminated or massive dolomites, cryptalgal laminites and fenestral lime mudstones – uppermost Ordovician (Richmondian, Cincinnatian) to Lower or Middle Llandoverian; Ymers Gletscher Formation (new) composed of light grey peritidal lime mudstones, fenestral lime mudstones and cryptalgal laminites 0150 Lower to Middle Llandoverian; Odins Fjord Formation (new) composed of shallow to deep subtidal dark lime mudstones, wackestones and commonly floatstone and rudstone biostromes – Middle (possibly Lower) to Upper Llandoverian; Melville Land Member (new) composed of light grey peritidal lime mudstones, fenestral lime mudstones and cryptalgal laminites – Middle (possibly Lower) Llandoverian; Bure lskappe Member (new) composed of drowned shelf, dark grey to black laminated lime mudstone with terrigenous mudstone interbeds – Upper Llandoverian; Samuelsen Høj Formation (new) composed of light grey to white reef limestones – uppermost Llandoverian; Harefjeld Formation (new), a faulted, folded and cleaved black lime and terrigenous mudstone unit in eastern Kronprins Christian Land – Ordovician to Silurian (Llandoverian).

A growth in the number of deer and an increase in their productivity are closely related to the solution of the complex problem of reproduction and rational use of deer females. Significant damage to reindeer husbandry is caused by the barrenness of northern domestic deer, the level of which has been quite high in recent years. So, in the Republic of Sakha, on 01.01.2020, the number of domesticated reindeer was 152,068, of which female deer and heifers — 71,818, offspring per 100 females — 59, business yield amounted to 52 fawns per 100 females. The causes of infertility are very diverse, as the natural and climatic conditions of the breeding zones have a significant influence on the reproductive function of reindeer. In Yakutia, the main population of northern domestic deer is bred in mountain taiga and tundra natural-climatic zones, so there are about 55 thousand deer in the mountain taiga zone and more than 65 thousand deer in the tundra zone. In this regard, the study of the peculiarities of the postpartum period course in domestic reindeer females, its morphophysiology, and behavioral reactions depending on the natural and climatic conditions of breeding is of great importance.

Впервые в мире создана популяция зубров на территории 60 градусов северной широты. В новых климатических условиях разведения и сохранения зубров определены и проанализированы факторы существования вида на севере Европейской части РФ. Выявлены признаки, динамика численности, которые являются составной частью системы, предназначенной для управления биоразнообразием. Интродукция, являясь процессом введения в экосистему нехарактерных для нее видов, может усиливать изменения биоценозов как положительно, так и отрицательно. Насколько быстро и успешно проходит процесс адаптации заселенного вида, и усматривается его влияние на окружающую среду зависит дальнейшее существование зубров и в целом биоразнообразия. В статье обсуждаются вопросы взаимоотношения зубров с другими видами копытных и хозяйственной деятельностью человека, а также дальнейшим использованием зубров в сельскохозяйственном производстве. Пластичность зубров, выявление изменений и их анализ при вселении видов в новые условия обитания необходимы не только для определения развития или деградации биоценозов и в целом экосистемы, но и прогноза социально-экономических последствий интродукции как одного из методов сохранения редких и исчезающих видов фауны.For the first time in the world, a bison population has been created in an area of 60 degrees north latitude. In the new climatic conditions of breeding and preservation of bison, the factors of the species existence in the north of the European part of the Russian Federation are identified and analyzed. The signs, dynamics of abundance, which are an integral part of the system designed to manage biodiversity are identified, since the preservation of biological diversity on the planet is one of the main problems of our time. Introduction, being the process of introducing non-typical species into an ecosystem, can enhance changes in biocenoses, both positively and negatively. The question posing sounds especially when it comes to such a large hoofed animal as the European bison. How quickly and successfully the process of adaptation of the universe takes place and its environmental impact is seen depends on the continued existence of bison and biodiversity in general. The article discusses the relationship of bison with other types of ungulates and human activities, as well as the further use of bison in agricultural production. How these issues will be resolved positively depends on the future of these animals. Thus, the plasticity of bison, the identification of changes and their analysis, with the introduction of species into new habitat conditions is necessary not only to determine the development or degradation of biocenoses and the ecosystem as a whole, but also to predict the socio-economic consequences due to the introduction as one of the methods of preserving rare and endangered species of fauna.

Abstract Upper Ordovician strata exposed from the Baiyanhuashan section is the most representative Late Ordovician unit in the northwestern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). In total, 1,215 conodont specimens were obtained from 24 samples through the Wulanhudong and Baiyanhuashan formations at the Baiyanhuashan section. Thirty-six species belonging to 17 genera, including Tasmanognathus coronatus new species, are present. Based on this material, three conodont biozones—the Belodina confluens Biozone, the Yaoxianognathus neimengguensis Biozone, and the Yaoxianognathus yaoxianensis Biozone—have been documented, suggesting that the Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna has a stratigraphic range spanning the early to middle Katian. The Baiyanhuashan conodont fauna includes species both endemic to North China and widespread in tropical zones, allowing a reassessment of the previous correlations of the Katian conodont zonal successions proposed for North China with those established for shallow-water carbonate platforms at low latitudes. Continuous Plankton Recorder records from the North Sea and north-east Atlantic from September 1997 to March 1998 indicate an exceptional influx of oceanic indicator species into the North Sea. These inflow events, according to historical evidence, have only occurred sporadically during this century. This exceptional inflow and previous inflow events are discussed in relation to their similarity in terms of their physical and climatic conditions.

The geology of the area around the northern part of the Langjökull ice sheet in central Iceland is outlined. This area includes the termination of the western neovolcanic zone, two silicic centers, and basaltic interglacial, intraglacial, and postglacial volcanoes. The lava succession becomes older to the northwest of the area where the zone of young volcanoes gives away to a pile of lavas of pre-Bruhnes epoch age which dip at low angles towards the active zone.This active zone undergoes a change in strike from NE–SW to north–south near latitude 64 °55′N and the volcanoes north of this are smaller in volume than those on the southern extension of the zone. The area of Bruhnes epoch activity dies out above latitude 65 °10′N but much of the area between here and the north coast of Iceland was a line of volcanic activity during the preceding Matuyama epoch.The northern part of the western active zone in Iceland became inactive in late Pleistocene times, and the southern part of the zone is an area of continuing crustal growth. The zone of active volcanism does not terminate against a transform fault and crustal growth is accommodated by deformation of the crustal plate. Lines of crustal growth which subsequently die out can be invoked to explain the anticline and syncline structures in the lava pile and the currently-active Snaefellsnes zone in western Iceland.

To enhance our understanding of the reproductive biology of deep-sea hydrothermal vent mytilids, the histology of the male gonad and the ultrastructure of its gametes were studied in Bathymodiolus thermophilus, B. puteoserpentis, and B. elongatus. Specimens of B. thermophilus were collected at the 13°N site on the East Pacific ridge, while B. puteoserpentis were sampled from the Snake Pit site of the mid-Atlantic ridge and B. elongatus were obtained from the North Fiji Basin. Gonad histology conformed to the typical bivalve profile; the differences in the proportions of acinal and interacinal tissue, as well as differences in acinal fullness in B. puteoserpentis, indicate that gametogenesis is discontinuous in these deep-sea mytilids. Evidence of protandric hermaphroditism was observed in B. elongatus, which exhibited acini containing both maturing and residual male gametes and immature oocytes. The ultrastructural characteristics of the male gametes conform to those described for littoral bivalve species, and the spermatozoon is of the primitive type. No species-specific differences in spermatozoon ultrastructure were discerned. No evidence of bacterial inclusions was found in either the gametes or the associated gonad cells in any of the species examined. The male gametes are thus probably not vectors for the endosymbiotic bacteria that characterize the nutritional biology of the adults in this genus.

Abstract Changes in runoff parameters are very important for Slovakia, where stream-flow discharges, being supplied by precipitation and groundwater runoff, are preferentially influenced by climatic conditions. Therefore, teleconnections between runoff parameters, climate parameters and global atmospheric drivers such as North Atlantic Oscillation, Southern Pacific Oscillation, Quasi-biennial oscillation and solar activity were studied in the Nitra River Basin, Slovakia. Research was mostly based on records of 80 years (1931-2010) for discharges and baseflow, and 34 years for groundwater heads. Methods of autocorrelation, spectral analysis, cross-correlation and coherence function were used. Results of auto- correllograms for discharges, groundwater heads and base flow values showed a very distinct 11-year and 21-year periodicity. Spectrogram analysis documented the 11-year, 7.8-year, 3.6-year and 2.4-year periods in the discharge, precipitation and air temperature time series. The same cycles except of 11-years were also identified in the long-term series of the North Atlantic Oscillation and Southern Pacific Oscillation indices. The cycle from approximately 2.3 to 2.4-years is most likely connected with Quasi-biennial oscillation. The close negative correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation winter index and the hydrological surface and groundwater parameters can be used for their prediction within the same year and also for one year in advance.
