This article contains a meta-analysis of representations of the main models of recruiting women into the field of professional business in European, English language and Russian periodical press. The aim of this study is to systemize the theoretical-conceptual and practical aspects of reproducing certain means of recruitment into the economic elite, as well as the restrictions which women face when choosing a professional development trajectory. A meta-description of the career paths of those women who established themselves in the entrepreneurial field allows for reconstructing women’s scenarios of choosing and forwarding their career in business, as well as for constructing a typology of narrative strategies which affect women’s choices in professional development trajectories in the context of different countries. The empirical basis for this study consists of full-text articles from periodical and serial publications in leading foreign and domestic academic journals. Using critical discourse analysis of articles and open data allows for reconstructing the significance of gender aspects when it comes to choosing a career in business, as well as for tracing the influence of the context of developing female entrepreneurship on recruitment mechanisms in various countries. The results of the empirical study show that the representation of mechanisms for recruiting women into the professional environment is differentiated in different ways in English language and Russian periodic press. Peculiarities inherent to different countries are one of the factors which affect the development of business trajectories specific to certain regions. In Europe a discourse-system education prevails as the most adequate means for establishing oneself in the economic field. Eastern Asian countries mostly focus on the immigration process. In Russia we see gender labeled strategies in leadership positions. The manner in which recruitment mechanisms are pitched also varies: European articles mostly focus on positive trends and representing the discourse of successful business cases, while Russian periodical press concentrates on the obstacles and restrictions women have to deal with when choosing a career path. The narratives used for reconstructing the mechanisms for recruiting women into the realm of business, together with the terminology chosen by the authors of this article, confirm a positive representation of female entrepreneurship in Europe, an ambiguous nature of the business environment in countries of the Far East, and a certain degree of underdevelopment in Russia’s segment.

We report the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the relationship between perceptual anchoring and dyslexia. Our goal was to assess the direction and degree of effect between perceptual anchoring and reading ability in typical and atypical (dyslexic) readers. We performed a literature search of experiments explicitly assessing perceptual anchoring and reading ability using PsycInfo (Ovid, 1860 to 2020), MEDLINE (Ovid, 1860 to 2019), EMBASE (Ovid, 1883 to 2019), and PubMed for all available years up to June (2020). Our eligibility criteria consisted of English-language articles and, at minimum, one experimental group identified as dyslexic - either by reading assessment at the time, or by previous diagnosis. We assessed for risk of bias using an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Six studies were included in this review, but only five (n = 280 participants) were included in the meta-analysis (we were unable to access the necessary data for one study).The overall effect was negative, large and statistically significant; g = -0.87, 95% CI [-1.47, 0.27]: a negative effect size indicating less perceptual anchoring in dyslexic versus non-dyslexic groups. Visual assessment of funnel plot and Egger’s test suggest minimal bias but with significant heterogeneity; Q (4) = 9.70, PI (prediction interval) [-2.32, -0.58]. The primary limitation of the current review is the small number of included studies. We discuss methodological limitations, such as limited power, and how future research may redress these concerns. The variability of effect sizes appears consistent with the inherent variability within subtypes of dyslexia. This level of dispersion seems indicative of the how we define cut-off thresholds between typical reading and dyslexia populations, but also the methodological tools we use to investigate individual performance.

Abstract Introduction Exercise is widely accepted to improve health, reducing the risk of premature mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. However, several epidemiological studies suggest that the exercise-longevity relationship may be ‘J’ shaped; with elite athlete’s likely training above these intensity and volume thresholds. Therefore, the aim of this meta-analysis was to examine this relationship in former elite athletes. Methods 38,047 English language articles were retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed and SportDiscus databases published after 1970, of which 44 and 24 were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis, respectively. Athletes were split into three groups depending on primary sport: Endurance (END), Mixed/Team, or power (POW). Standard mortality ratio’s (SMR) and standard proportionate mortality ratio (SPMR) were obtained, or calculated, and combined for the meta-analysis. Results Athletes lived significantly longer than the general population (male SMR 0.69 [95% CI 0.61–0.78]; female SMR 0.51 [95% CI 0.40–0.65]; both p < 0.01). There was no survival benefit for male POW athletes compared to the general population (SMR 1.04 [95% CI 0.91–1.12]). Although male athlete’s CVD (SMR 0.73 [95% CI 0.62–0.85]) and cancer mortality (SMR 0.75 [95% CI 0.63–0.89]), were significantly reduced compared to the general population, there was no risk-reduction for POW athletes CVD mortality (SMR 1.10 [0.86–1.40]) or END athletes cancer mortality (SMR 0.73 [0.50–1.07]). There was insufficient data to calculate female sport-specific SMR’s. Discussion Overall, athletes live longer and have a reduced incidence of both CVD and cancer mortality compared to the general population, refuting the ‘J’ shape hypothesis. However, different health risks may be apparent according to sports classification, and between sexes, warranting further investigation. Objectives This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of HCQ in improving the maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancies with SLE. Methods A literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database for relevant English language articles, and Wanfang, CNKI and VIP for Chinese articles, from the databases’ inception to April 30, 2020. These studies compared the maternal and/or fetal outcomes between pregnant patients with SLE who were administered HCQ during pregnancy (HCQ+ group) and those who were not administered HCQ (HCQ− group). Two investigators extracted the data and assessed the quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and GRADE criteria independently. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. All statistical analyses were conducted using the Stata 12.0 software. Results Nine studies involving 1132 pregnancies were included in the study (3 case controls, 2 prospective cohorts, 4 retrospective cohorts). Preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and prematurity were significantly lower in the HCQ+ group than in the HCQ− group (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.21–0.59), (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.19–0.89) and (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.36–0.86), respectively. There were no significant differences in the rates of HELLP Syndrome (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.19–3.96), gestational diabetes (OR 2.3, 95% CI 0.44–12.12), thrombotic events (OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.05–1.51), spontaneous abortion (OR 1.77, 95% CI 0.96–3.26), premature rupture of membranes (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.24–1.39), oligohydramnios (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.38–2.14), live birth (OR 1.22, 95% CI 0.60–2.47), stillbirth (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.50–2.00), congenital malformation (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.14–2.04), low birth weight (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.43–1.39), intrauterine distress (OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.41–2.76,), intrauterine growth restriction (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.06–5.43), or five-minute APGAR score <7 (OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.20–2.58) between the two groups. Conclusions HCQ treatment during pregnancy could reduce the risk of preeclampsia, pregnancy hypertension and prematurity in SLE patients. The certainty of evidence is high but majority of the studies included are retrospective studies and not randomized controlled trials. Therefore, the multidisciplinary management of pregnant patients with SLE should promote HCQ use, irrespective of disease activity or severity.

Abstract BACKGROUND Although meningiomas are among the most prevalent types of brain tumors, AMs account for around 4% of all meningiomas. AMs tend to be more aggressive with relatively higher rates of recurrence and mortality. Gross total resection (GTR) has been the standard of care when possible. However, GTR itself is not always enough to prevent the recurrence of AMs. The role of PORT remains controversial in AM as the comparative studies to support its use have provided conflicting RESULTS: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the impact of PORT on clinical outcomes according to the extent of resection in AMs. METHODS A review of the medical literature was conducted using online databases. Inclusion criteria consisted of AM diagnosis, English language, Simpson graded resections, and comparative studies reporting recurrence rates (RcR), Progression-Free Survival (PFS), and Overall Survival (OS) with hazard ratios (HR) or Kaplan-Meier curves. A meta-analysis was conducted using an inverse variance method with a random-effects model. RESULTS Twenty-two comparative studies with a total of 5,129 patients were included and analyzed. When GTR was attained, PORT was associated with improved RcR (HR =0.72, 95%CI:0.59-0.86) and PFS (HR=0.77, 95%CI:0.65-0.90), but not OS (HR=0.93, 95%CI:0.83-1.04). When subtotal resection (STR) was attained, PORT was associated with improved PFS (HR=0.35, 95%CI:0.26-0.48) as well as OS (HR=0.70, 95%CI:0.54-0.89). The extent of surgery also impacted AM outcomes as GTR demonstrated superior PFS (HR=0.45, 95%CI:0.31-0.65) and OS (HR=0.30, 95%CI:0.13-0.72). CONCLUSIONS This is the first meta-analysis to show that PORT is associated with PFS benefit in AMs with GTR and STR. Moreover, PORT significantly improved OS of AMs that underwent STR but had no impact on OS when GTR was achieved. In the absence of randomized clinical trials, this meta-analysis represents the most compelling data supporting the use of PORT in this patient population.

The Qatari government views English language learning as crucial to the country’s future success. Anecdotal evidence suggests, however, that English language teachers (ELTs) employed in Qatar may not necessarily have the appropriate training, qualifications, and experience to enable them to teach successfully. Despite growing research and interest in the continuing professional development (CPD) experiences and needs of ELTs in Western contexts, there remains a lack of research in Middle Eastern countries in general and in Qatar in particular. The aim of this study was to address this gap by exploring female ELTs’ perceptions and experiences of CPD in Qatar in order to develop new practical and theoretical insights into our understanding of this area. The study draws on data from life history interviews undertaken with 16 female ELTs with at least 3 years of teaching experience in Qatari schools. The study found that the participants had very different experiences of CPD based on their personal and professional characteristics. This suggests that for it to be perceived as a positive experience, the current model of professional development for ELTs may need revising. We propose a paradigm shift from a traditional “one size fits all” CPD model towards a more dynamic and interactive style of teacher development that facilitates both personal reflection and professional discourse among teachers. It is argued that such a shift would prove a considerable step forward for English language teaching in this country.

This article reviews research on the achievement outcomes of elementary mathematics programs; 87 rigorous experimental studies evaluated 66 programs in grades K–5. Programs were organized in six categories. Particularly positive outcomes were found for tutoring programs (effect size [ES] = +0.20, k = 22). Positive outcomes were also seen in studies focused on professional development for classroom organization and management (e.g., cooperative learning; ES = +0.19, k = 7). Professional development approaches focused on helping teachers gain in understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy had little impact on student achievement. Professional development intended to help in the adoption of new curricula had a small but significant impact for traditional (nondigital) curricula (ES = +0.12, k = 7), but not for digital curricula. Traditional and digital curricula with limited professional development, as well as benchmark assessment programs, found few positive effects.

This qualitative case study carried out at a Turkish university with four English language teachers aims to explore what teachers experience in the planning, implementation, analysis, and reporting phases of the lessons study process and what the implications of lesson study for teacher professional development can be. Data in this four-month study were gathered through observations, interviews, whole group discussions, and reflective reports. Findings revealed that lesson study had potential challenges and benefits for the professional development of teachers. The model poses challenges in finding a topic and research question, determining the lesson design and teaching style, making student thinking observable and analyzing qualitative data. On the other hand, it benefited teachers in terms of increasing their pedagogical content knowledge, reflectivity, research skills, collaboration, and collegiality. This study suggests that lesson study might be a good starting point for institutions wishing to adopt a more teacher-led, inquiry-driven and collaborative perspective for professional development.

Abstract Background Morning report is accepted as an essential component of residency education throughout different parts of the world. Objective To review the evidence of the educational value, purpose, methods, and outcomes of morning report. Methods A literature search of PubMed, Ovid, and the Cochrane Library for English-language studies published between January 1, 1966, and October 31, 2011, was performed. We searched for keywords and Medical Subject Heading terms related to medical education, methods, attitudes, and outcomes in regard to “morning report.” Title and abstract review, followed by a full-text review by 3 authors, was performed to identify all pertinent articles. Results We identified 71 citations; 40 articles were original studies and 31 were commentaries, editorials, or review articles; 56 studies (79%) originated from internal medicine residency programs; 6 studies (8%) focused on ambulatory morning report; and 63 (89%) originated from the United States. Identified studies varied in objectives, methods, and outcome measures, and were not suitable for meta-analysis. Main outcome measures were resident satisfaction, faculty satisfaction, preparation for professional examinations, use of evidence-based medicine, clinical effects on patient care, adverse event detection, and utilization of a curriculum in case selection. Conclusions Morning report has heterogeneous purposes, methods, and settings. As an educational tool, morning report is challenging to define, its outcome is difficult to measure, and this precludes firm conclusions about its contribution to resident education or patient care. Residency programs should tailor morning report to meet their own unique educational objectives and needs.

Although the Chinese media’s construction of unmarried citizens as ‘leftover’ has incited much controversy, little research attention has been given to the ways ‘leftover men’ are represented in discourse. To fill this gap, this study performs a critical discourse analysis of 65 English language news reports in Chinese media to investigate the predominant gendered discourses underlying representations of leftover men and the discursive strategies used to construct their identities. The findings show that the media perpetuate a myth of ‘protest masculinity’ by suggesting that poor, single men may become a threat to social harmony due to the shortage of marriageable women in China. Leftover men are represented as poor men, troublemakers and victims via discursive processes that include referential, predicational and aggregation strategies as well as metaphor. This study sheds light on the issues and concerns of a marginalised group whose predicament has not been given much attention in the literature.
