Abstrak : Kajian ini membahas dua cerita pendek dalam Kumpulan Cerita Pendek Akar Pule karya Oka Rusmini. Tulisan ini bertujuan mengungkap, menganalisis, dan mendeskripsikan penderitaan fisik dan penderitaan psikis yang dihadapi perempuan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif. Pengarang menyuarakan pemikirannya melalui kemunculan tokoh-tokoh perempuan dan berbagai permasalahan yang bersumber dari laki-laki. Posisi perempuan selalu dianggap lemah, sistem patriarki yang tumbuh subur di Bali semakin menekan kedudukan perempuan sehingga perempuan semakin tidak berdaya dan harus tunduk dengan aturan adat yang sangat merugikan pihak perempuan. Kata kunci: sastra, feminisme radikal, sistem patriarki   Abstract : This study discusses two short stories part of Akar Pule anthology written by Oka Rusmini. In this study, the writer attempts to reveal, analyze, dan describe physical and psychological oppressions experienced by the female character. In this study the writer uses qualitative method as research method. The author voices her thoughts by presenting the female characters and their problem caused by male characters (men). In these short stories female characters (women) are placed in weaker position than men. The patriarchal system which is deeply rooted in Balinese culture gives more oppression towards women making Balinese women more powerless and forcing them to obey the customs that disadvantage them. Research 'traces the female characters in the short story' Ammavuku '; a subaltern study aimed to identify the position of female characters in the patriarchal system as described by Saras in her short story 'Ammavuku'. This research able to answer questions about the position of subaltern women in a family organization. This study was conducted using qualitative and descriptive methods. Information and data obtained through the library research method were made by looking for reference materials in books, journals, the internet, as well as libraries of several public institutes of higher learning. The literature method is used extensively in this study. The Subaltern study in Saras short stories covers the rights of women who are oppressed by men in their daily lives. The rights of women studied in terms of women as mothers, wives and children. The study of subaltern theory in the 'Ammavuku' short story will be a solution to the problems faced by women and to raise awareness among women in family institutions.

The dialogue between image and text in Riana Scheepers's Dulle Griet This article examines the way in which the content and theme of Riana Scheepers’s Dulle Griet (1991) interact with the “manneplot” (traditional and/or stereotypical portrayal of female characters within novels) and with the cover illustration of the book – a detail of “Mad Meg” (as she is often referred to) from Pieter Brueghel’s Dulle Griet (1562). It explores how the women in Scheepers’s short stories are portrayed – not only as vulnerable, but also as evil and corrupt. They are abused victims; but they are also tyrannical abusers. They are innocent maidens and mothers, but also lovers, prostitutes, lesbians and murderers. The way in which the gradual degeneration of the anonymous central female character relates to Brueghel’s image of “Mad Meg” on her way to the jaws of hell is discussed in this article. But the article also demontrates Scheepers’s concern with feminist issues by using the cover as an ironic “frame”, and shows that the moral decline of the women portrayed in the text seems to be as a result of the actions of chauvinistic men, who appear in different forms throughout the text. Female degeneracy can thus be seen as a survival mechanism, in a world – and a text – dominated by the masculine paradigm, the “manneplot” of traditional male attitudes to women.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap suara-suara masyarakat yang dimarginalkan dalam kumpulan cerpen Orang-Orang Pinggiran karya Lea Pamungkas. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra dengan metode penelitian deskripsi kualitatif hermeneutik. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah karya sastra berupa kumpulan cerpen Orang-Orang Pinggiran karya Lea Pamungkas. Data pada penelitian ini berupa teks yang memperlihatkan suara-suara masyarakat pinggiran. Hasil penelitian ini berupa marginalisasi terhadap perempuan dan kelompok masyarakat. Marginalisasi pada perempuan, yaitu perempuan dianggap hanya sebagai subjek pemuas nafsu kaum laki-laki. Marginalisasi terhadap kelompok masyarakat ini berupa suara yang diabaikan dalam memenuhi kebutuhan sehingga menyebabkan kemiskinan Indonesia.Kata kunci: kumpulan cerpen, marginal, masyarakat pinggiran, sosiologi sastra ABSTRACT This study aims to reveal the voices of the marginalized in a collection of short stories Orang-Orang Pinggiran by Lea Pamungkas. This research uses sociology of literature theory with hermeneutic qualitative description research method. The Source of this research is a literary work in the form of a collection of short stories from Orang-Orang Pinggiran by Lea Pamungkas. The data in this study are in the form of texts that show the voices of marginalized communities. The result of this research is the marginalization of women and community groups. Marginalization of women, women are considered only as a subject to satisfy the lust of men. The marginalization of this community groups is in the form of their a voice that is ignored in meeting their needs, causing poverty in Indonesia.Keywords: a collection of short stories, marginal, marginal societ, literary sociology

Abstract The approach taken in this essay proceeds from the assumption that the biblical text of Esther reflects a patriarchal ideology and it is largely the males in the story who wield the power. However, instead of examining the negative consequences for the female characters and how the patriarchal system forces them to operate, I look to the male characters to see how they fare in the system of patriarchy which they undoubtedly inhabit. In the first part of the essay, I consider the call issued by womanist and liberation theologians from traditionally marginalized communities for the need for liberation of both the oppressed and the oppressors from systems of oppression. In the second part of the essay, I respond to this call via an analysis of the book of Esther. First, I examine four different actions or attitudes that characterize the men in the story. Second, I observe some places where their power clearly brings them loss. Third, I argue that the destructive attitudes, actions, and relationships of the men in the story demonstrate their own need for liberation from the oppressive system of patriarchy from which they supposedly benefit.

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan transgresi seksual yang terdapat dalam novel Para Penebus Dosa karya Motinggo Busye. Metode yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah metode deskriptif analitis. Data dari novel dideskripsikan untuk memperoleh gambaran transgresi seksual. Dalam novel tersebut pelanggaran terhadap kebiasaan seksual, norma, dan kelas digambarkan melalui peristiwa seksual yang dialami oleh para tokoh, terutama tokoh perempuan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa tokoh perempuan digambarkan banyak melakukan tindak transgresi dibandingkan dengan tokoh laki-laki. Analisis juga menunjukkan bahwa narator dalam novel memiliki sikap bias gender dan mendukung nilai-nilai patriarki dengan lebih banyak memberikan hukuman terhadap tokoh perempuan yang melakukan tindak transgresi seksual dibandingkan kepada tokoh laki-laki.Abstract:The paper aims at describing sexual transgression in Motinggo Busye’s “Para Penebus Dosa”.  The research applies descriptive method. The sexual transgressions elaborated in the novel are presented through the deviance of sexual affairs, social norms, and class experienced by the characters, especially female character. The result of the research shows that  female characters described in the story committed a lot of sexual transgressions compared to male characters. The study also reveals that the narrator in the novel  has a gender bias act. Moreover, he supports values of patriarchy by giving more punishment to the female committing sexual transgression act than to the male.

Paul Schrader’s connection with director Robert Bresson is often explored through his male characters, the ‘man in his room’ of Light Sleeper and American Gigolo, but Taxi Driver before them and First Reformed most recently. However, Schrader’s two primary experiments with female characters, Cat People (1982) and Patty Hearst (1988), also follow a similar Bressonian trajectory and end with each female character incarcerated, yet finding a kind of spiritual freedom that helps them realize their identities. This chapter explores Schrader’s women primarily through close examination of Cat People’s Irina (Nastassja Kinski) and Natasha Richardson’s eponymous heroine in Patty Hearst, but use his representation of women in the male-driven films for points of comparison and contrast. In addition, this chapter approaches Schrader’s women as reflections of his male characters, many of whom are driven by existential anxiety that motivates them to seek self-actualization in redemptive violence.

<p>Eka Kurniawan's Corat-coret di Toilet short stories compilation book contains twelve short stories that tell about light stories everyday but full of social criticism. Some of the short stories that portrayed female characters presented women who were not free in their lives, one of which was titled Dongeng Sebelum Bercinta and Si Cantik yang Tak Boleh Keluar Malam. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the position of women and their resistance toward patriarchal domination. This is interesting to be studied further by using feminist theory to find the position of women in literary works written by male writers. This research will focus on the actions of female characters which shape their position in the story. The data used in this study are in the form of words, sentences or expressions from short stories that show the dominance of patriarchy towards women and their efforts to get out of domination. From research using feminist theory it was found that patriarchal domination arises in the closest male characters to female characters such as fathers, male friends and husbands. Women resistance in the story was a form of false resistance which in turn strengthened the dominance of patriarchy and the dichotomy between men and women. This was found based on the fact that every resistance made by women turned to weaken women themselves.</p><p> <em> </em></p>

Abstrak: Tulisan ini menampilkan posisi tokoh perempuan pada tiga cerpen karya pengarang Kalimantan Timur pada tahun 1980-an. Ketiga cerpen tersebut berjudul ”Perkawinan”, ”Buah Hati”, dan ”Luka Cinta” . Pada cerpen-cerpen tersebut posisi perempuan berada di tengah-tengah budaya patriarki. Kondisi itu menyebabkan perempuan mengadakan perlawanan dengan pola berbeda-beda. Perlawanan perempuan menimbulkan konflik identitas pada perempuan. Dengan teori feminisme, penelitian ini menganalisis sebab dan akibat tokoh perempuan mengalami konflik identitas.  Bentuk-bentuk konflik identitas yang dialami tokoh perempuan juga akan dianalisis. Relasi tokoh perempuan dengan tokoh-tokoh lain dengan demikian juga akan dianalisis lebih lanjut. Tokoh-tokoh tersebut meliputi tokoh-tokoh yang menjadi ikon patriarki dan tokoh-tokoh yang mendukung tokoh perempuan untuk melakukan perlawanan.  Analisis menunjukkan konflik identitas yang terjadi pada perempuan disebabkan patriarki yang secara terus menerus melakukan upaya agar perempuan merasa melakukan kesalahan apabila perlawanan tersebut berhasil. Analisis juga menunjukkan kondisi tersebut disebabkan pula oleh tidak kuatnya pertahanan perempuan untuk memilih identitasnya. Cerpen-cerpen Kalimantan Timur tahun 1980-an menunjukkan pergulatan perempuan dalam memilih identitasnya. Kata kunci: perempuan, identitas, patriarki Abstract:This paper presents the position of female characters in three East Kalimantan short stories   in the 1980s. The three short stories are "Marriage", "Baby", and "Luka Cinta". In these short stories, women are in patriarchal culture. This condition makes women deal with their condition differently. Women’s resistance creates identity conflicts. Using the theory of feminism, this study analyzes the the forms, causes, and effects of the conflicts and also  the connection between female character and the others, including patriarchal icons and others who support women to fight back. The analysis shows that identity conflicts are caused by patriarchy that continuously make women feel wrong if their struggle is successful and also caused by women's lack of strength in their struggling to choose their identity. East Kalimantan short stories in 1980s show women’s struggle in choosing their identity. Keywords: women, identity, patriarchy

The paper analyses the depiction of male characters in the select texts of the Slovak writer Ivana Dobrakovová. Although male protagonists are not rare in her prose, little attention is paid to them. This literary approach to their depiction is determined by the writer’s strong focus on the main female protagonists – the female characters make the majority in Dobrakovová’s short stories. However, men regularly appear as fathers or intimate partners of her female characters, and these relationships – ranging from informal to institutional – play a specific role in her works.

Ida Ayu Oka Rusmini is a major contemporary Indonesian author. She has published two novels, Tarian Bumi (2000) and Kenanga (2003a), a collection of short stories, (Sagra, 2001), and a volume of poetry, Patiwangi (2003b, republished in 2007 as Warna Kita, with the omission of some 12 poems). Born in Jakarta in 1967 of Balinese parents, she was a member of the highest Balinese caste, the brahmana caste, but renounced this status, including her title, after her marriage to the East Javanese essayist and poet Arif B. Prasetyo. Oka Rusmini is a graduate of the Indonesian Studies Department, Udayana University, and lives in Den Pasar where she works as a journalist for the Bali Post. Most of Oka Rusmini’s prose works explore the constraints into which the socioreligious practices of caste place all members of society, but most especially women. Both of her novels tell of a woman’s abandonment of her brahmin caste status as the result of her marriage to a sudra. The title of the poetry book, Patiwangi, refers to the ritual practice by which this degradation is confirmed, and the poem which gives the book its title bears the footnote: ‘Patiwangi: pati = death; wangi = fragrant. Patiwangi is a ritual that is performed on a noble women in her Village Temple to remove her noble status as a consequence of having married a man of a lower caste. The ritual often has a serious psychological impact on noble women’ (107). In both novels, and many short stories and poems, their loss of status brings enormous scorn and hardship to the major woman characters. Nevertheless, as we shall see, stepping outside patriarchally-dominated caste ties may also provide an ambiguous freedom for any woman who is positioned to take advantage of the opportunities which the modern, potentially secular, nation state of Indonesia, offers her. In this paper, I am interested in the way in which the short story, ‘Cenana’ (Sagra, 270-318), uses a traditional myth to deal various cross-caste transgressions in contemporary Balinese society. The story draws on one of the foundation myths of medieval Javanese history, the story of Ken Angrok, founder of the dynasty of Singhasari, East Java, in 1222 AD, and his consort, Ken Dedes, the wife of Ken Angrok’s predecessor. To my knowledge, although the myth has been the subject of a number of modern literary works, Oka Rusmini’s is the only account by a Balinese woman. Through its focus on the transgressions committed by strong female characters of all caste backgrounds, and dissolute male characters, Oka Rusmini’s narrative in ‘Cenana’ allows for a revision of conceptions of feminine agency in a society based on respect for high caste men and marriage to them.
