Literature enables authors to express various societal matters. Shakespeare provides a wide range of information from the Elizabethan era through his works. An important issue that is evident in his work is gender roles. The roles of characters, as described by Shakespeare, show social norms that define female and male genders. Female characters in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and Othello are underestimated because of the stereotypical gender roles. The roles involving female characters revolve around the homestead, unless where a female character is from a wealthy family, a queen or a princess. Male dominance in society implies that the Shakespearean era advocated for women discrimination.

This research aims at the theme of the study of feminism in acting, especially in film. The female figure in this film is described as a strong and spirited female figure. This female figure exists among the domination of men as usual. A female figure is usually portrayed in a feminine role, but in this film, the roles shown are very different. From the role of this female character in this film "The Great Wall", emerges the Existentialist Feminism side, for example, that women are described as a figure who has a level of independence, a way of thinking that is not dependent on men. This study uses descriptive qualitative research using the strategy proposed by Simone de Beauvoir, how women interpret themselves, like 1) work and determine fate; 2) join intellectual groups, think, see, and define to bring about change for women; 3) work and achieve social transformation in society, and 4) refuse to internalize that women are below men. This study shows that the emotional side of a woman cannot change the character of a woman in dealing with problems, this can be seen from the storyline given in this colossal genre film.

Through the analysis of the graphic novel L’Arabe du future 1. Une jeunesse au Moyen-Orient (1978-1985) by the Franco-Syrian cartoonist Riad Sattouf, this contribution aims to investigate the construction of hegemonic masculinity in Gaddafi’s post-colonial Libya and Hafez al Assad’s Syria. First, this study intends to track the stages of Riad’s journey towards the achievement of hegemonic masculinity. In this context, a special focus will be laid on the construction of the mother’s character through that of the father, thereby showing how the female character takes shape from the male perspective. Second and finally, it attempts to analyse how the author implements a deconstruction path of hegemonic masculinity by using certain rhetorical devices, namely irony, stereotype repetition and the adoption of his own perspective as a child.

The paper is focused on the correlation between the psychological archetype of a film character and the linguistic elements composing their speech. The Nurturer archetype is represented in the film Inside Out by the personalized emotion Joy. Joy is depicted as an antropomorphous female character, whose purpose is to keep her host, a young girl Riley, happy. As the Nurturer, Joy is completely focused on Riley’s happiness, which is expressed by lexico-semantic group ‘happy’, positive evaluative tokens, exclamatory sentences, promissive speech acts, and repetitions. She needs the feeling of connectedness with other members of her family, which is revealed by lexico-semantic groups ‘support’ and ‘help’. She is ready to sacrifice everything to save the girl in her care, which is demonstrated by modal verbs, frequent word-combination ‘for Riley’, and directives.

The aims of this article are divided in two: (i) show that life stories of migrants are currently necessary because they contemplate a discursive look that is at once social, historical and psychological; (ii) to investigate the identity “mysteries” of the protagonist and narrator of the novel Lucia, written by Olga Canllo Salomon, which tells the life of a poor Argentinian girl who, through displacements/migrations, found her place in the world after being forced to flee the military regimen that ruled her country in the 1970s. This female character fits into what I call “transclass subjects” because she went through life’s hardships hoping to find something better. The article relies on the theoretical convergence of life stories according to Machado (2018; 2019) and the Semiolinguistics proposed by Charaudeau (1983; 2006), to which I also add the ideas of Cyrulnik (2015) to explain/apply the notion of resilience, a feature of the novel’s female protagonist. I hope this article serves as testimonial of the research I have been conducting for some years and to which I now add the figure of migrants. Finally, excerpts of Lucia are cited to illustrate the imaginaries of beliefs of her homeland as well as her emotions, fears, and audacity

The article aims to identify some of the peculiarities of the XIXth century outlaw novel in relation to the conventions and the stereotypes of the adventure novel, focusing on George Baronzi’s novel, Mina the Outlaw. The Girl of the Forests, an agreeable novel in spite of several narrative clumsiness. The novelty comes from the fact that the novel proposes a female character in the role of the hero, somehow accumulating the conventions and some narrative invariants specific to the outlaw novel, but also to the sentimental novel, the plot having as a starting point a love story. The novel is, therefore, chracterized by a certain naivity specific to the subgenre and to the literary period to which it belongs, but the author cannot be blamed for the lack of a certain sense of suspense and proliferation of adventures, by moving from one conflict to another, by changing the setting of the action thus activating its narrative potential.

This paper investigates the concepts of Feminism and Feminist Criticisms to identify their features in two novels; Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and Ibrahim Ahmed’s Janî Gel. The theoretical and historical backgrounds of Feminism and the other Feminist Criticisms are presented according to their importance. The paper then introduces the two novels by presenting their plot summary. This paper tries to answer how two prominent writers, one British and one Kurdish, discuss women issues. The author wants to investigate whether both writers’ cultural upbringing and social background affect the way they present women in their respective novels. Through quotations taken from the novels, one learns about the writers’ ideas regarding women’s issues; economic, social, psychological, and political. In conclusion, the present study argues that women’s experiences in English society and Kurdish society have many similarities; however, despite the many similarities, there lay differences regarding the attitudes of both writers towards women issues and representation. For instance, Wood presents an ideal female character to oppose women’s traditional roles in society in her novel. On the other hand, Ahmed paints vivid imagery of what women go through without solid women characters. Thus, this paper hopes to provide future students and researchers with helpful material on Feminism, Feminist Criticisms, and the analysis of both novels, especially the Kurdish one, since research is scarce on it.
