The article presents the results of operational tests of engine oil, including the observation of changes in the values of selected physicochemical parameters of oil in subsequent operation cycles, in accordance with the service life specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Preliminary analysis of defined indicators characterizing the condition of engine oil were performed in terms of their suitability for the ongoing monitoring of the technical condition of the engine. On the basis of the values of selected indicators of fresh oil recorded in the course of operational tests and during replacement, one indicator was selected, the kinematic viscosity at 100°C, for which an unambiguous trend of changes was observed during the tests. The last stage was to verify the hypothesis about the correlation between the observed changes in the value of the indicator and the mileage of the engine – vehicle.

Abstract This article is a continuation to the theme of the article Operational diagnostics synthesis of the naval gas turbines operated by the Polish Navy published in SJ of PNA No. 1/2017. This article presents examples of results of energy research carried out by the Polish Naval Academy in the years 1985–2016, for the purpose of operational diagnostics of this type of engine, operated by the Polish Navy. The research conducted since 1985 covered four types of naval gas turbines (DE 59, DR 76, DR 77 and LM 2500), with a total of 24 engines. Currently in operation there are four LM 2500 type engines. In the near future, another LM 2500 engine will commence operations, along with a project 661M patrol ship. The energy research covers the engine start-up process, their operation in idle mode and within the whole range of load variations, as well as the process of engine stopping. The article presents examples of characteristics specific to the above processes, determined based on the results of studies of individual types of engines. Currently ongoing studies allow for constructing strategies for naval gas turbines, operated in the Polish Navy, according to technical condition.

ABSTRACTChemical reactions were systematically investigated with regard to the propagation of Si-network in the vicinity of the growing surface by using various precursors, SiHn, SiHnFm, and SiHnCim (n+m≤3) generated by plasma-induced decomposition of SiH4, SiF4, SiH2Cl2 and SiHCl3. Atomic hydrogen was an effective agent to promote the propagation reaction due to its strong chemical affinity for silicon and its ability to diffuse through the Si-network. A preliminary analysis was made of the kinetics of the propagation reactions.

The article discusses the method of preliminary analysis of the reliability of the design of peat machines (PM) at the design stage. For the designed TM, it is possible to assess the reliability using generalized statistical data on similar peat machines, but significant errors arise that do not allow predicting the technical condition of the equipment under development with the required accuracy. The proposed technique makes it possible to evaluate the developed design of the machine in terms of reliability based on the analysis of the operation of similar units of existing PM. For this, the existing peats machines are divided into separate mechanisms, for which there are statistics on failure parameters. The division of the designed machines is carried out in a similar way; while in order to obtain the necessary reliability parameters, it is proposed to use the coefficient calculation method, taking into account the presence in the developed PM design of the number of the most critical parts and assemblies. Thus, the use of data from the operation of existing PM makes it possible to improve the quality of predicting changes in the reliability parameters of the machines being developed, and as a result, during their operation, a decrease in the number of downtime due to difficult-to-predict failures is achieved, which makes it possible to increase the seasonal productivity of PM.

The problem of increasing the dependability of the engine, which is the most complex and expensive unit of an automotive vehicle, cannot be solved without objective and reliable information on the failures and malfunctions of its components, their causes, actual life, as well as the factors affecting such indicators in real operational conditions. Manufacturing factories do not always have such information, hence design deficiency failures associated with design and development flaws are among the most common causes of loss of engine operability. The aim of this paper is to study the engine operational dependability using the results of their maintenance and repair. The methods are based on operational tests of engines that yield the most complete and objective information on their dependability, as they were conducted in typical operational conditions of automobile operating companies in the course of vehicle maintenance and repair. The results of the studies processed with the standard Statistica 6.0 are represented in the form the statistical evaluations of the dependability of primary structural engine components (times to failure, changes in the probability of nofailure depending on the travelled distance). The analysis of the obtained information allows estimating the level of actual dependability of the engine, identifying design flaws, developing specific measures aiming to increase operational dependability. Information obtained during such tests is useful not only to the engine manufacturers, but to the operators as well, as it enables a scientific substantiation of the norms of operability. For the purpose of identification and localization in the process of maintenance and repair of specific engine malfunctions, the paper substantiates a set of diagnostic parameters and their standard values.Conclusions. The research allowed elaborating a set of diagnostic parameters for evaluation of the technical condition of primary engine systems (cylinder-piston group, crank and gas distributing mechanisms) that define and limit its dependability. The application of the findings in the automobile maintenance and repair processes enables a significant improvement of the engines’ operational dependability and reduction of the costs of ensuring their operability.

The research aimed to investigate the bioremediation of spent engine oil on selected contaminated soils within Ilorin metropolis. To achieve this, soil samples were collected from three (3) mechanic workshops along Taiwo axis within the metropolis. The soil samples were then subjected to bioremediation using the land-farming approach. The physicochemical parameters of the soil samples before and after bioremediation were analyzed using standard methods. Bacteria were isolated using standard procedures and identified using biochemical tests and molecular methods. Results for the physicochemical parameters of the soil samples before bioremediation include particle size (all sandy in nature); pH (6.00 ± 0.14 - 6.20 ± 0.14); Organic carbon (14.65 ± 3.20 - 17.54 ± 1.87), Organic matter (33.50 ± 0.85 - 43.45 ± 9.12) and heavy metals (ND - 11.74 ± 0.07). Values after bioremediation for pH, organic carbon, organic matter and heavy metals were 8.25 ± 0.07 - 8.90 ± 0.14, 13.07 ± 0.05 - 13.25 ± 0.84, 37.25 ± 1.06 - 44.80 ± 1.13, ND - 9.40 ± 0.04 respectively. Values for bacterial count before and after bioremediation of the soil samples were 8.00  1.41 - 67.50 ± 2.12 x 105 CFU/mL and 6.50 ± 2.12 - 164.00 ± 11.31 x 105 CFU/mL respectively. Bacterial isolates were identified as Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp., Acinetobacter sp., and Bacillus sp. while the hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria were identified as Thalassospira mesophila strain JCM 18969; Pseudomonas fluorescens F113; Siccibacter turicensis LMG 23730; Pseudomonas Zeshuii strain KACC 15471; Pseudomonas stutzeri strain CGMCC 1.1803 and Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus strain ATCC 49840. In conclusion, the bacteria isolates effectively bioremediated the spent engine oil contaminated soils with a reduction of hydrocarbon pollutants.

The behaviour of engine oil is very important. In this paper has been evaluated temperature dependence kinematic viscosity of engine oils in the low temperatures. Five different commercially distributed engine oils (primarily intended for automobile engines) with viscosity class 0W–40, 5W–40, 10W–40, 15W–40, and 20W–40 have been evaluated. The temperature dependence kinematic viscosity has been observed in the range of temperature from −15 °C to 15 °C (for all oils). Considerable temperature dependence kinematic viscosity was found and demonstrated in case of all samples, which is in accordance with theoretical assumptions and literature data. Mathematical models have been developed and tested. Temperature dependence dynamic viscosity has been modeled using a polynomials 3rd and 4th degree. The proposed models can be used for prediction of flow behaviour of oils. With monitoring and evaluating we can prevent technical and economic losses.
