Teaching English grammar can be taught by some methods. Two of them are communicative language teaching (CLT) and explanation method. Both CLT and explanation method can be used to present the English language materials such as authentic materials, Scrambled sentences, language games, picture strip stories, poems, songs, poetry, map, and role play. Each of them has strength and weakness. Teaching with CLT can make the class become interesting and the student will not get bored. Whereas, by only using the explanation the student will get bored and the teacher as well. In Indonesia CLT is a modified version to adopt teaching English skills such as reading, writing and and speaking. Structural approach is still applied for teaching language elements such as structure/grammar and vocabulary. Explanation method is used to develop reading skill. However, based on the data of test result by the students, the result of explanation technique is more effectively targeted better than CLT.

Keywords: grammar, communicative, explanation, technique, teaching

The article deals with the applying of active methods in reading and the formation of linguistic competence for teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) to future bachelors in the field of Civil Engineering.Purpose of the research is to describe linguistic competence as an important component of the process of teaching active methods in reading to future engineers, to define some active methods in reading that can be implemented in the teaching of ESP in the process of training future civil engineers.Methods. Reviewing the studies on linguistic competence in reading in the process of teaching ESP and methods of active reading.Results. Prospects for teaching methods of active reading (KWL and SQ3R) to future engineers in the ESP teaching process are described. The definition of lexical competence and its components in the process of teaching methods of active reading is given. The difficulties of teaching active reading in ESP for students of technical specialties are determined.Conclusion. Taking into account that creativity and active participation are important factors in motivating students to learn ESP, we consider it appropriate to use methods of active reading (KWL and SQ3R) in combination with other intensive methods and technologies to train future engineers. We believe that exercises and tasks with different forms and models of authentic visualization of educational information (AVEI) for learning English vocabulary in professionally oriented reading are effective. AVEI, taken from professional articles and other authentic materials in the field of civil engineering, can contribute to the formation of lexical competence of students.

Over past few decades, research on authentic materials has been focused on helping teachers provide their learners teaching materials. Most of the researches in this area explore the benefits and drawbacks of authentic materials utilization in the classroom. This multiple case study aims at investigating benefits of and barriers in using authentic materials presented as a digital media used in their EFL classrooms. Document and an interview were employed to reveal the teachers perception. The findings indicate although it was considered difficult to find and organize, digitized authentic materials helped teachers in teaching English as a Foreign Language for learners with various levels and backgrounds. Its use could help teachers motivate and promote their students interest in learning. However, disselection and misuse of it might not meet students needs and interest in learning. Good teachers capacity in finding and using the digitized authentic materials could encourage better learning process and students better learning achievement. Therefore, it is recommended that for the further study, learners perception also need to be explored.
