Plant-derived digestive enzyme inhibitors particularly those targeted to carbohydrate metabolism has been the focus of recent studies as natural supplements for weight control and diabetes. The present study explores the salivary amylase inhibition activity of Garcinia mangostana (Linn.) pericarp extracts and Carica papaya (Linn.) leaf extracts and fractions, as well as perform phytochemical screening and quantification, and thin layer – and high performance liquid chromatographic profiling. ­Results show that crude extracts and purified fractions were able to inhibit salivary amylase, with C. papaya fraction 1 being the most active at 30.89% inhibition. Phytochemical screening of all extracts tested ­positive for tannins, glycosides, phenolics, flavonoids and alkaloids. Quantification of phenolics showed that extracts contained high levels of phenolics, with C. papaya crude extract having the highest content with 219.0±12.7 mg GAE/g extract followed by G. mangostana crude extract with 247.1±18.0 mg GAE/g extract. Quantification of total flavonoids also showed C. papaya crude extract to contain the highest content with 55.12±0.679 mg QE/g extract. All extracts contained negligible alkaloid content, though. HPLC and TLC profiling showed several peaks and bands, when viewed in 210 nm and UV light, respectively. These results demonstrate in vitro the salivary amylase inhibitory activity of both plants and their potential as antidiabetic drug candidates; however, further studies need to be done, like isolation and structure elucidation of active components and toxicity assays. Keywords: Amylase inhibition, phytochemical quantification, Carica papaya, Garcinia mangostana

The present study was aimed at the development of topical gel of extract of Mangifera indica L. seed kernel and evaluation of its in vitro antibacterial activity. Various extracts using different solvents were prepared and evaluated for in vitro activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Ethanolic extract of M. indica L. seed kernel exhibited the highest in vitro antimicrobial activity and was considered further. Topical gels of this ethanolic extract were prepared using different polymers such as Carbopol 974P, Xanatural 180 and Methocel K15M in varying concentrations. The topical gel of 10 % w/w ethanolic extract of M. indica L. seed kernel with 2% w/w Carbopol 974P was uniform and yellowish transparent with satisfactory spreadability. The developed gel showed greater in vitro antimicrobial activity as compared to marketed herbal cream. These results indicate the potential of topical gel of ethanolic extract M. indica L. seed kernel as anti-acne formulation developed from plant waste product.

Abstract The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity, antioxidant, toxicity and phytochemical screening of the Red Propolis Alagoas. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by disk diffusion method. Determination of antioxidant activity was performed using the DPPH assay (1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FTC (ferric thiocyanate) and determination of phenolic compounds by Follin method. Toxicity was performed by the method of Artemia salina and cytotoxicity by MTT method. The phytochemical screening for the detection of allelochemicals was performed. The ethanol extract of propolis of Alagoas showed significant results for antimicrobial activity, and inhibitory activity for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida krusei. The antioxidant activity of the FTC method was 80% to 108.3% hydrogen peroxide kidnapping, the DPPH method showed an EC50 3.97 mg/mL, the content of total phenolic compounds was determined by calibration curve gallic acid, resulting from 0.0005 mg/100 g of gallic acid equivalent. The extract was non-toxic by A. salina method. The propolis extract showed high activity with a higher percentage than 75% inhibition of tumor cells OVCAR-8, SF-295 and HCT116. Chemical constituents were observed as flavonones, xanthones, flavonols, and Chalcones Auronas, Catechins and leucoanthocyanidins. It is concluded that the extract can be tested is considered a potential source of bioactive metabolites.

 Objective: This study examined the antioxidant and anticancer potential activities of the hexane fraction from the male flower of Carica papaya L., which is long been known to be a very important source of nutraceutical and pharmaceutical.Methods: Standard fractioned (fraction) method with phytochemical screening. The antioxidant activity was carried out using the α,α-diphenyl-β- picrylhydrazyl method and the anticancer potential activity was carried out using 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-. 2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay to check the cytotoxic activity on WiDr (colon cancer cell) and Vero cell (normal cell).Result: Phytochemical screening of the hexane fraction from the male flower of papaya shows a strong sign of triterpenoids and steroids; while the IC50 of antioxidant value was 100.81±1.180 μg/ml. Cytotoxic effect shows that the hexane fraction of papaya male flower had selectivity to WiDr cell (colon cancer cell).Conclusion: This study provides evidence that C. papaya L. male flower possesses antioxidant activity, as well as cytotoxic and chemopreventive properties. It might be beneficial as medicinal plant as an antioxidant and anticancer nutraceutical and pharmaceutical sources.
