Disease pandemic has shown that human health does not belong to health human resources only but beyond it. People should realize that health issues could not only be relied on the health sector but it also needs a cross-cutting stakeholders such as social scientists, economists, politicians, non-governmental organizations, mass media, private entities, mass participation etc. So, human health belongs to the participation of everyone because it comes from everyone. No one will deny it!

The non-governmental organizations (NGOs) require human resources to carry out their activities. This includes both the professionals who are paid and the volunteers. The capture of this resource acquires as much importance as the implementation of the social goals that these organizations promote. It can be said then that just as the commercial or cultural sectors are approached from the field of communication and design, it is valid to make an academic approach to this social problem. Fundraising was born as a strategy applied in NGOs with the purpose of generating resources for them to be able to sustain themselves through time.

Abstract An Organization Capacity Assessment done in Bomu hospital in April 2015 with an aim to strengthen the local institution’s capacity for sustainable fight against HIV Aids pandemic led to the development of this excel-based cost effectiveness analysis tool. Objective: The specific objectives were to develop a cost-effectiveness analysis excel tool complete with instruction manual for use in costing, determining prices of services and carrying out economic evaluations. Method: A technical working team (TWG) comprising of senior management of the hospital and the University of Nairobi Fellow was formed. The TWG identified program where cost indicators would be derived, developed cost indicators collection tools, collected costing data and build necessary consensus and assumptions. The data was used to design the tool complete with working instructions. Results: The tool comprises of processes, instructions, excel data entry provisions and inbuilt formulae in excel sheets. The unique tool features include; simple to use instructions, systematic listing of cost elements with a drop down option to allow selection as required, allows additional cost elements to be added thus increasing scope of use . The tool also separates costs and sub-costs in a manner that allows cost drivers to be known precisely as well as avoid double costing among others. Conclusion: The tool is transferable to other facilities and can be replicated in all hospitals within the country, in private, public and non – governmental organizations. Its regular review, improvements and utilization will be important for the health sector to fully benefit from its use. It will be necessary to sensitize health facilities to address information gaps and also ensure that data is available in form and detail necessary for costing purposes. AbstractStrengthening health systems to provide equitable, sustainable health care has been identified as essential for improving maternal and reproductive health. Many donors and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have contributed to undermining health system strengthening, however, through adhering to what Swidler and Watkins call the “sustainability doctrine,” policies that prioritize time-limited, targeted interventions best suited for short-term funding streams, rather than the long-term needs of local populations. This chapter presents ethnographic data from semi-structured and key informant interviews with 16 policymakers and NGO directors in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 2011 to 2012. I illustrate how sustainability doctrine policies were put into practice, and how they have persisted, despite their shortcomings, using examples of donor-prioritized maternal healthcare initiatives in Tanzania rolled-out several years apart: prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC) programs in the late 2000s, and more recent efforts to implement respectful maternity care (RMC) programs. I focus on several issues informants identified as crippling efforts to build strong health systems, particularly the internal brain drain of healthcare workers from the public sector to higher-paying NGO jobs, and the prioritization of types of programs donors believed could be sustained after the funding period ended, specifically trainings and workshops. I describe how despite these issues, international organizations still design and implement less effective programs that often fail to account for local circumstances in their efforts to solve some of the more intractable health issues facing Tanzania today, in particular, the country’s stagnating maternal mortality rate. In this chapter, I argue that practices promoted and implemented under the guise of “sustainability” in policy papers and reports generated by donors paradoxically contribute to health system precarity in Tanzania.

 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have been promoted in the development activities in Nepal since the restoration of democracy in 1990. NGOs have been recognized as one of the development facilitator institutions in Karnali Zone. The objective of this study was focused to identify the status of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on the basis of its structure, environment, values and Impact. The study had adopted the civil society index as a theoretical tool of study. Randomly in total 562 respondents were selected from five districts of Karnali zone. The findings of ANOVA showed that there was a significant difference between respondents in the structure of NGOs in P=0.007 significant level at 95% confidence interval. But other three components environment, values and impact were not significantly difference. It could be assumed that because of the geographical differences, involvement of human resources, basic infrastructure, access on communication and technologies and perception on NGOs activities are the major factors which made the perceptual difference among the respondents in structure of NGOs. Similarly, contribution of NGO in promotion of political awareness, transparency of their work and empowering citizenship were more or less in the same level in all five districts so response of participants became similar in environment, values and impact of NGOs. It is necessary to identify the locally reliable and related indicators of NGO to assess the NGO's status and their performance.

There is very little research conducted in Kenya on the prevalence of dementia. Although there is no specific strategy on dementia care in Kenya, the government of Kenya has made several strides towards improving mental health service provision. In 1982, the Kenya government became one of the signatories to the International Plan of Action on Ageing in Vienna, Austria. Later on, it incorporated the rights of the elderly into the 2010 Constitution and recently launched a mental health policy to address mental health issues in Kenya. While something has been done by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in mental health, there is still a huge gap in access to mental health services, particularly dementia. This can be overcome through massive research and collaboration between the government and NGOs to identify and treat dementia, as well as other mental disorders.

The relations between society and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been relatively neglected in the field of China NGO studies, which remains largely wedded to a state–NGO problematic within a state–society framework. In this anthropological study of an NGO’s post-Wenchuan earthquake recovery programme, we adopt an actor-oriented approach to identify the main lines of tension between the strategies, rationalities, and techniques deployed by the different actors in the field. Focusing on NGO–society relations, we take the NGO not as an incarnation of society vis-a-vis the state, nor as an incarnation of the state vis-a-vis society, but as a key link in a shifting chain of state and non-state actors that aims to introduce to local society an assemblage of techniques, discourses, and values for the promotion of self-government. This ‘international development package’ is a specific form of what social scientists have theorized as ‘governmentality’. In this case study, the modalities of participation and cooperative self-government promoted within this development package are in tension with local values, social relations, and political structures. The case shows that dynamic tensions between the actors are mediated by the deployment of practices of governance that circulate between international institutions and networks, state agencies, NGOs, and local authorities and actors.

Mental health is the condition of an individual’s well-being. Mentally healthy individuals realize their abilities, cope effectively with the everyday stresses encountered in life, show resilience during extreme events in life, perform efficiently, and participate in the community's development. The global concern of mental health issues is enormous, under-appreciated, and mostly not fulfilled. Hence, the paper assessed the awareness on the Mental Health Law of the registered social workers in Negros Occidental in the areas of general provisions, psychiatric, neurologic, and psychosocial services. It also social workers' mental health services in educational institutions, communities, hospitals, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

SummaryBirdwatching has become a global pastime and a driving force for conservation. Because of China’s economic and environmental importance, the emergence of birdwatching as a mass participation leisure activity in China over the past three decades is of global interest. We documented this emergence by conducting an extensive literature search and two online questionnaires which we used to describe the history, geographic distribution, demographics, activities, motivations, and environmental concerns of Chinese birdwatchers. The emergence happened because of (1) the transfer of ornithological knowledge to birdwatchers, (2) the increasing political tolerance to pursue pastimes, (3) the increasing leisure time, affordability of optical equipment, and urbanisation of China’s society, (4) increased internet use, and (5) interactions of birdwatchers with the media and foreign birdwatchers. Of the 576 respondents to our questionnaires, two-thirds were male, about half were younger than 35 years of age, approximately 90% were university-educated, and many also had an above-average income and originated mostly from the more urbanised coastal or near-coastal provinces. Our respondents were thus part of China’s economic and educational elite who largely birdwatch for enjoyment, but also because of the knowledge gained about the birds’ ecology. Many birdwatchers have become concerned about the deteriorating state of the environment and are frustrated about the lack of government action. Within the political constraints set by the government, many birdwatchers support environmental conservation through various activities, which have yielded some conservation successes. However, birdwatching societies remain constrained by the same legislative and administrative restraints which limit the actions of other environmental non-governmental organizations, thus hindering the effective discourse between China’s government and its emerging but still strictly controlled and regulated civil society.
