Natural products from dietary components such as Indian species and medicinal plants are known to possess antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are inhibitors of oxidation are compounds which prevent the oxidation and in general prolong the life of the oxidizable matter. Majority of the diseases/disorders are mainly linked to oxidative stress due to free radicals. The free radicals (oxidants) are species with very short half-life, high reactivity and damaging activity towards macromolecules like proteins, DNA and lipids. In general, the reactive oxygen species circulating and react with the electron of other molecules in the body and these also affect various enzyme systems and cause damage which may further contribute to conditions such as cancer, ischemia, ageing, adult respiratory distress syndromes, rheumatoid arthritis etc. Dietary plants contain variable amounts of antioxidants. It has been proved that plant antioxidants may contribute to the beneficial health effects of dietary plants. The present study was to evaluate antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of iv vivo whole plant and in vitro leaf callus of Mollugo oppositifolia L. is an important traditional medicinal herb belonging to the family Molluginaceae using 2,2-diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays. The results obtained showed that the ethanolic extracts of whole plant in vivo and in vitro leaf callus showed significant DPPH activity with IC50 value of 52.82± 0.0017 μg/mL and 58.66±0.004μg/mL respectively, while IC50 of vitamin C as standard was 84.84±11.54μg/mL. Present study revealed that an antioxidant activity was higher leaf callus extract compare to whole plant extract of Mollugo oppositifolia L.

The aim of present study was to estimate the in vitro antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea. Antioxidant activity was assessed by using 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. The extract was found to scavenge effectively the free radicals. The total flavonoid contents were determined by established methods and were found to be 0.547 mg/100mg in quercitin equivalents. Antimicrobial activity was performed against 2 stains of human pathogenic bacteria by well diffusion method. Hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea showed good antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria. The antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of significant amounts of flavonoid compounds. Results indicated that hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possess significant antioxidant effect in dose dependent manner, followed by the hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possessed good antimicrobial activity. Radikal bebas yang berbahaya jika konsentrasi ROS akan meningkat sehingga akan mengakibatkan stress oksidatif. Stress oksidatif biasanya disebabkan oleh konsentrasi tinggi dari radikal bebas dalam sel dan jaringan yang dapat diinduksi oleh beberapa faktor negatif seperti gamma, UV, radiasi sinar-X, tekanan psiko-emosional dan makanan yang tercemar.Untuk meminimalisir radikal bebas dalam tubuh diperlukan antioksidan alami seperti ekstrak buah kiwi dan ekstrak buah apel. Uji aktivitas antioksidan pada masing- masing ekstrak dilakukan dengan metode DPPH (1,1- difenil-2-pikrihidazil). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa nilai IC50 dari ekstrak buah kiwi lebih rendah daripada IC50 ekstrak buah apel. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak buah kiwi mempunyai aktivitas antioksidan lebih kuat dari ekstrak buah apel. Oxidative stress is usually caused by high concentrations of free radicals in cells and tissues which can be induced by several negative factors such as gamma, UV, X-ray radiation, psycho-emotional pressure and contaminated food. To minimize free radicals in the body natural antioxidants such as kiwi fruit extract and apple extract. The antioxidant activity test on each extract was carried out by the DPPH method (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrihydazyl). The results showed that IC50 value of kiwi fruit extract was lower than IC50 of apple fruit extract. This shows that kiwi fruit extract has stronger antioxidant activity than apple extract. This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

Plants are adundantly and are very promisive to be used as source of drugs in many diseases or infections and also it is a main agents of antioxidants which prevents the oxidative stress that are caused by the free radicals. There are numerous studies based on the pharmaceutical and classification of medicinal plants throughout the world. Leaves, fruits, roots are most frequently plant parts used in many research and studies. Here the present study was aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity of aqueous and ethanol leaf extracts of Andrographis paniculata Nees and Rhinacanthus nasutus Kurz. Antioxidant is a substance which is used to prevent some types of cell damage in the body. Determination of their in vitro antioxidant activity were carried out by using methods such as DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl assay), ABTS (2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazolin 6-sulfonic acid assay), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power assay) and SOD (super oxide anion scavenging) assay, H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging) assay. Moreover the ethanolic leaf extracts showed best antioxidant activity than the aqueous leaf extracts. Experimental results reveals that the leaves of A. paniculata have potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity than R. nasutus. Further investigation must be done for these two medicinal plants for the discovery of the bioactive compounds.

Background: Presence of free radicals in human body are harmful and cell systems are induce many diseases like cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer, inflammation, neuro-degenerative disorder, atherosclerosis, cataract, etc. Antioxidants can balance the effect of free radicals. Antioxidant-rich herbs are identified for preparation of drugs that can be administered to neutralize the free radicals. In the present context the selected medicinal plant is “Origanum majorana” (Family- Lamiaceae) widely known as Marwa in India sub-continent. As the medical professionals show their desires towards composite or lateral treatment, application of drugs with herbal origin gained its importance. Objective: This review presented various in vitro and in vivo methods used in the antioxidant activity study of O.majorana and observed its efficacy to reduce oxidative stress. Methods: Referred many reliable sources like Research gate, PubMed, Science Direct, Google scholar, Wiley online library, books to collect all information about the antioxidant activity of the selected plant. Results: Used several methods to determine the antioxidants activity of O.majorana, such as superoxide radical scavenging, ferric ion reducing antioxidant potency, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation inhibition, etc. The selected plant contains many phytoconstituents such as gallic acid, ferulic acid, apigenin, catechin, rutin, quercetin, luteolin, linolenic acid, β-sitosterol, and essential oils, which may be responsible for antioxidant activity. Conclusions : The review article provides information for investigating and developing new antioxidant methods and major phytoconstituents from O.majorana for better therapy of oxidative stress-mediated complications.

Antioxidants are compounds needed by the body to fight free radicals that can cause adverse effects on health. All parts of turmeric plant have antioxidant activity, so does the flower. It is thought that the endophytic fungi from turmeric flowers also have antioxidant activity and no studies have reported it yet. The purpose of this study was to study the antioxidant activity of single and mixed cultures of endophytic fungi isolated from turmeric flowers. In vitro antioxidant activity assay was conducted using the DDPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging method by measuring its absorption using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 517 nm. The extract of single and mixed cultures of endophytic fungi isolated from turmeric flowers showed antioxidant activity. The combination of fungal cultures can increase the antioxidant activity of a single culture. This study is the first to report that the combination of endophytic fungi from turmeric flowers can increase its antioxidant activity. Therefore, the presence of the endophytic fungi in turmeric flowers that have antioxidant activity can provide additional information so that the utilization of turmeric flowers as a source of natural antioxidants will increase.

Excessive accumulation of free radicals can cause a variety of diseases. According to reports, chalcone has the activity of scavenging free radicals. In this study, we synthesized a chalcone derivative CZM-3-5 and evaluated its antioxidant activity using a chemical assessment method (2,2and#39;-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS•+) assay, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) assay and total reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay) and a cell model of oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The chemical evaluation results show that the compound CZM-3-5 has good antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging ability. MTT analysis showed that the compound has cytoprotective activity in H2O2-induced PC12 cells, and the mechanism may be related to the cytoprotective substance superoxide dismutase (SOD) is related to the level of glutathione (GSH). Overall, our findings indicate that compound CZM-3-5 has potential antioxidant activity in vitro.

The current study was carried to make available phytochemical information and evaluation of antioxidant activity of Acampe praemorsa (Roxb.) Blatt. & McCann. The phytochemical analysis was carried out using procedures and quantified phenolic and alkaloid contents. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by in-vitro and in-vivo studies. The In-vitro antioxidant activity was carried on free radicals such as superoxide, hydroxyl DPPH, hydrogen peroxide, evaluation of reducing power. In-vivo study was carried on albino Wistar rats with different doses of extracts. The results provide that, A. praemorsa extracts have diversified phytochemicals in extracts like steroids, alkaloids, phenolics, glycosides, oils, quinones, tannins etc. The hydroalcoholic extract has more phenolic (26.80±0.51) and alkaloid (20.59±0.22) contents. The antioxidant activity results provide information that the extracts possess concentration dependent activity on tested free radicals. The hydroalcoholic extract has more protective nature against superoxide, DPPH, H2O2 free radicals and reducing power but ethyl acetate extract has more potential against hydroxyl free radical than hydroalcoholic extract. The extracts were found to be safe on toxic studies and In-vivo study results and they play significant role in controlling the oxidative enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, lipid peroxidation (malonaldehyde) in the body. Thus, it was determined that A. praemorsa have potential bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity.

The aim of our present study was to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-lipid peroxidation activity of ethanolic extracts of <em>Bougainvillea species viz B. shubhra, B. peruviana and B. bhuttiana</em> golden glow. Phytochemical constituents viz. total phenolics, flavonoids and tannins were assayed using standard protocol. The antioxidant activity was studied by DPPH assay, FRAP assay, reducing power assay and in-vitro inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Of the three species, <em>B. bhuttiana</em> golden glow showed highest amount of phenols (6.78±0.001), flavonoids (27.7±0.012) and tannin (11.08±0.008) contents. It also showed highest antioxidant activity of 15.15± 0.008 and 8.08± 0.018 as determined by FRAP assay and reducing power assay respectively. The percent DPPH radical scavenging activity was 82.72% and in-vitro inhibition of lipid peroxidation in mitochondrial membrane was also found to be highest in <em>B. bhuttiana</em> golden glow.
