The aim of present study was to estimate the in vitro antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea. Antioxidant activity was assessed by using 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. The extract was found to scavenge effectively the free radicals. The total flavonoid contents were determined by established methods and were found to be 0.547 mg/100mg in quercitin equivalents. Antimicrobial activity was performed against 2 stains of human pathogenic bacteria by well diffusion method. Hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea showed good antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria. The antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of significant amounts of flavonoid compounds. Results indicated that hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possess significant antioxidant effect in dose dependent manner, followed by the hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possessed good antimicrobial activity. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate the in vitro biological effect of the methanolic crude extract received from edible mushrooms; Flammulina velutipes on anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, anti-lipid peroxidation (LPO), antimicrobial activity, and anticancer activity. The scientific result obtained here was possibility of developing this variety as an ingredient in health/medical food purposes as well as a functional food.Methods: In this study, the methanol crude extract of F. velutipes has been performed and in vitro pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, anti-LPO, antimicrobial activity, and anticancer activity were evaluated.Results: The results revealed that anti-inflammatory activity of crude extract was very significant with 79.81±0.87% of the dose-dependent manner. Antioxidant and anti-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) peroxidation activity of the extract showed its capacity of free radical scavenging with high-level antioxidant compounds and lipid preventive effects (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl: 79.81±0.01%, total phenol: 991.10±0.01 μg gallic acid equivalents/0.1 g dry matter, H2O2: 93.27±0.05%, LPO: 33.33±0.00%, and LDL: 57±0.03%, respectively). Analysis has also demonstrated that the methanolic extract of F. velutipes provided an antimicrobial activity to ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. Moreover, F. velutipes extract showed a growth inhibitory effect in HepG2 cells with the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value IC50=8.25±7.59 μg/ml.Conclusion: This indicated that crude extract from F. velutipes was scientifically proved as a potential source of therapeutic agent and be able to utilize as a functional ingredient for healthy or supplement food.

Introduction. Honey, propolis and pollen belong to bee products that have beneficial biological properties. These products exhibit e.g. antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Due to biological activity and natural origin, bee products are used, e.g. in the food industry, cosmetology and pharmacy. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of honey, propolis and pollen from an apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. Material and methods. Honey, propolis and pollen used in this study came from the same apiary located in Wielkopolska Province. The antioxidant potential of bee products was evaluated applying DPPH· free radical scavenging activity assay. The antimicrobial activity of the tested bee products was determined by the point-diffusion method against 13 strains of pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the total content of phenolic compounds in honey, propolis and pollen was determined by the colorimetric method. Results. Propolis exhibited higher antioxidant activity, in comparison to honey and pollen. The antiradical activity of propolis was equal to 80% approx. activity of Trolox, the standard antioxidant. Among tested bee products, propolis was characterized by the highest total phenols content. In addition, honey, propolis and pollen showed antagonistic activity against tested bacterial strains. Conclusions. The obtained results indicate that among the tested bee products of native origin, i.e. honey, propolis and pollen, propolis characterized by the highest antioxidant activity and the total content of phenolic compounds. In addition, all bee products showed bactericidal activity against the tested bacterial strains.

An attempt has been made to evaluate antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity properties of extracts from onion (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum), leaves of guava (Psidium guajava), papaya (Carica papaya), tea (Camellia sinensis), baen (Avicennia alba) and keora (Sonneratia apetala), respectively to apply as natural preservatives for tomatoes. The air-dried plant materials of the respective plant species were subjected to ethanol-methanol extraction, concentrated and stored at 4 °C before use. The extracts were dissolved in 95% ethanol for analysis of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Of the extracts tested, tea extracts showed the highest zone of inhibition against several pathogenic bacteria (E. coli 35.0±3.2 mm; P. aeruginosa 29.3±2.6 mm; S. typhi 28.4±2.1 mm and S. pyogenes 27.7±3.7 mm) using the disc diffusion method. In regard to DPPH free radical scavenging assay, keora and guava extracts showed the highest percentage of radical scavenging activity with the values of 89.64± 0.18 and 89.39± 0.88, respectively, which were in agreement with higher total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of these extracts obtained by the phosphomolybdenum method. Brine shrimp lethality bioassay for cytotoxicity assessment showed LC50 of 132.54 ± 18.99 µg/mL for the leaf extract of keora which was found to be most toxic among all studied extracts. The initial results indicated that the extracts could be used for food preservative applications based on the antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity properties of the tested extracts. However, efficacy, stability and safety issues need to be addressed with both in vitro and in vivo studies.


Annona muricata is one of the important herbal plant that are widely used to treat antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, antimalarial, anticancer, antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In the present study, extraction procedure was carried out in few step processes method. The extract contains high percentage of steroid, alkaloid, flavonoid, phenolic and saponin. The extract was used to study the antioxidant activity; antibacterial activities and anticancer activity by standard methods. The antioxidant activity was studied by using radical scavenging DPPH, FRAP and H2O2 method and disc diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity of the following bacteria’s such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, E.coli shows the maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus which is around 1.7 cm. The anticancer activity was carried out by MTT assay using Hep-G2 as cell line and results are reported in the paper.

Dibenz[b,f]azepine and its five derivatives bearing different functional groups were synthesized by known methods. The compounds thus synthesized were evaluated for antioxidant potential through different in vitro models such as (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity,ß-carotene-linoleic acid model system, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum method. Under our experimental condition among the synthesized compounds dibenz[b,f]azepine (a) and 10-methoxy-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine (d) exhibited potent antioxidant activity in concentration dependent manner in all the above four methods. Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid (AA) were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. The most active compounds like dibenz[b,f]azepine and its methoxy group substituent have shown more promising antioxidant and radical scavengers compared to the standards like BHA and ascorbic acid. It is conceivable from the studies that the tricyclic amines,i.e. dibenz[b, f]azepine and some of its derivatives are effective in their antioxidant activity properties.

 Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the pharmacological evaluation of previously isolated compounds (CR-1 to CR-5) from the areal part of Cuscuta reflexa Roxb. is reported.Methods: The antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the isolated compounds (CR-1 to CR-5) from C. reflexa was determined by the disc-diffusion method and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) model, respectively. The antimicrobial activity was performed against four strains Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Results: The results revealed that highest zone of inhibition is measured by compound CR-5 against E. coli. The antioxidant activity is evaluated for in vitro antioxidant activity using DPPH radical scavenging activity, inhibitory concentration 50% (IC50) (120.92–76.38 %), respectively. The results indicate that isolated compound CR-1 and CR-2 having IC50 76.38 and 76.94 μg/ml, respectively, showed potent antioxidant activity comparable to standard ascorbic acid (IC50 43.42 μg/ml).Conclusion: This study suggests that areal part of C. reflexa have bioactive compounds for a new antimicrobial and antioxidant drug development.

The metal complexes of Fe(III) and Cu(II) were prepared by using 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNPH) and thiocyanate (SCN) with stirrer refluxed for about 6 h. The prepared Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility and electronic spectrum, FT-IR spectral studies. The result suggested the octahedral geometry for Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes. Powder X-ray diffraction indicate the crystalline nature of the metal complexes. The antimicrobial activities of the Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes were tested with various micro organisms by disc diffusion method. The antimicrobial results indicate that the metal complexes are highly active with compared to the free ligand. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the free ligand and its metal complexes was assayed by radical scavenging activity (DPPH). The result proposed that Fe (III) and Cu(II) complexes exhibited strong antioxidant activity than that of the ligand.

The use of natural food additives is currently a rising trend. In the present study, the aim was to determine the antimicrobial effects of plum, pomegranate, Seville orange and sumac sauces on E. coli O157:H7,E. coli type I,Listeriamonocytogenes, Listeria ivanovii, Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus. Different concentrations (1%, 10%, 100%, v/v) of the sauces were tested on the studied bacteria in vitro using the agar diffusion and minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) methods. The results showed that the sumac sauce had the highest antimicrobial activity. The Seville orange, plum and pomegranate sauces also exerted antimicrobial activity in descending order. The antimicrobial activity of the fruit sauces was more effective at a concentration of 100% than at 10% and 1%, v/v. The most inhibitory effect was recorded for sumac sauce at a concentration of 100% (v/v) on L.monocytogenesand E. coli O157:H7. The findings of the MIC method aligned with the agar diffusion method. In addition, the in situ(food method) antimicrobial effect of the sauces on the indigenous microflora of chicken breast samples sold in stores was determined. Chicken samples hosting aerobic mesophilic bacteria, coliforms and E. coli were treated for two hours at 4 °C with plum, pomegranate, Seville orange and sumac sauces and were then monitored. The findings revealed that the Seville orange and sumac sauces were the most effective in reducing the indigenous microbial growth on the chicken samples. The plum sauce showed higher antimicrobial activity than pomegranate sauce. The phenolic content and acidity of the samples significantly (P< 0.05) affected the antimicrobial activity both in vitro (agar diffusion and MIC) and in situ (chilled chicken breast). In conclusion, the sumac and Seville orange sauces were found to be the most promising natural antibacterial agents, and their use could be recommended, for example, in catering services to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.

Kaempferol (Kae) is a natural flavonoid with potent antioxidant activity, but its therapeutic use is limited by its low aqueous solubility. Here, a series of Kae derivatives were synthesized to improve Kae dissolution property in water and antioxidant activity. These compounds included sulfonated Kae (Kae-SO3), gallium (Ga) complexes with Kae (Kae-Ga) and Kae-SO3 (Kae-SO3-Ga). The compound structures were characterized by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermal methods (TG/DSC). The results showed that a sulfonic group (-SO3) was successfully tethered on the C3’ of Kae to form Kae-SO3. And in the metal complexation, 4-CO and 3-OH of the ligand participated in the coordination with Ga(III). The metal-to-ligand ratio 1:2 was suggested for both complexes. Interestingly, Kae-SO3-Ga was obviously superior to other compounds in terms of overcoming the poor water-solubility of free Kae, and the solubility of Kae-SO3-Ga was about 300-fold higher than that of Kae-Ga. Furthermore, the evaluation of antioxidant activities in vitro was carried out for Kae derivatives by using α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) free radical scavenging. The results showed that Kae-SO3-Ga was also optimal for scavenging free radicals in a dose-dependent manner. These data demonstrate that sulfonate kaempferol-gallium complex has a promising future as a potential antioxidant and as a potential therapeutic agent for further biomedical studies.

Background: The Algerian medicinal plant Thymus pallidus Coss. is traditionally known to be used as an anti-infective, expectorant, healer of wounds and against inflammatory and gastrointestinal diseases. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the antioxidants and the antibacterial activities of the aerial part extracts of this plant. Methods: Polyphenols extraction was performed with methanol 85%, followed by preliminary fractionation based on the polarity of the solvent. The extraction and fractionation process gave the crude extract (CrE), chloroform extract (ChE), ethyl acetate extract (EtAE) and aqueous extract (AqE). The antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated using in vitro assays. While the antimicrobial activity was determined using disk diffusion method. Results: Quantitative analysis of polyphenol and flavonoids showed that EtAE includes the highest amount (P≤0.001) with 495.12±1.91 μg GAE/mg of extract and 97.25±2.84 μg QE/mg of extract, for both polyphenols and flavonoids respectively. The results of the antioxidant activity of extracts showed that the EtAE exhibited the highest inhibition activity on XO (IC50 =51.6±0.2 μg/ml) compared to other extracts (P≤0.001). Moreover, the EtAE was the most effective fraction in free radical scavenging assay against ABTS radical and hydrogen peroxide (EC50= 3.21±0.03 μg/ml and EC50 =12.12±0.05 μg/ml, respectively) compared to other extracts (P≤0.01). Using β-carotene/ linoleic acid bleaching assay, the AqE and ChE recorded a considerable inhibition effect on linoleic acid oxidation with a ratio of 81.81% and 80.86%, respectively. In the antimicrobial activity evaluation, the extracts exhibited moderate antibacterial activity against bacterial strain, with inhibition zone ranging from 07 to 14 mm. In addition, the EtAE showed a good action spectrum against six bacterial strains. In conclusion, the EtAE of Thymus pallidus showed good antioxidant activity and antibacterial effect. Conclusion: The obtained results revealed the presence of a strong correlation between the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the extract and its total phenolic content. Furthermore, they reported that the EtAE has a considerable antioxidant capacity. This can be considered as an alternative natural source of antioxidants used generally as additives in food and pharmaceutical preparation.
