Cystoseira is a relevant alga, which forms dense meadows on rocky substrates up to 100 meters deep. They are widely recognized as bioindicators for their restricted habitat (sub-coastal zone) and low tolerance to pollution. We have monitored Cystoseira sensu lato (sl) spp. in abrasion platforms in Cabo de Las Huertas (Alicante, SE Spain), a total of seven species. A cladogram has been constructed using fifteen phenotypic taxonomic relevant characters. We have also optimized Cystoseira DNA extraction and sequenced amplicons from mt23S, tRNA-Lys, and psbA genes of five Cystoseira sl species from Cabo de Las Huertas. Our phylogenetic supertree, built with these sequences, backs three clades in the genus. Rare species Treptacantha sauvageauana and Treptacantha algeriensis, sequenced for the first time, are included with T. elegans and the Atlantic species T. baccata and T. abies-marina in Cystoseira-VI or Cystoseira-II clades. Our data supports a complex colonization of Cystoseira (sl) spp. in the Mediterranean, perhaps involving Atlantic clades.

Cystoseira sensu lato (sl) are three genera widely recognized as bioindicators for their restricted habitat in a sub-coastal zone with low tolerance to pollution. Their ecological, morphological and taxonomic features are still little known due to their singular characteristics. We studied seven species of Cystoseira sl spp. in Cabo de las Huertas (Alicante, SE Spain) and analyzed their distribution using Permutational Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) and Principal Component Ordination plots (PCO). A morphological cladogram has been constructed using fifteen phenotypic taxonomic relevant characters. We have also developed an optimized Cystoseira sl DNA extraction protocol. We have tested it to obtain amplicons from mt23S, tRNA-Lys and psbA genes. With these sequence data, we have built a phylogenetic supertree avoiding threatened Cystoseira sl species. Cartography and distribution analysis show that the response to hydrodynamism predicts perennial or seasonal behaviors. Morphological cladogram detects inter-specifical variability between our species and reference studies. Our DNA phylogenetic tree supports actual classification, including for the first-time Treptacantha sauvageauana and Treptacantha algeriensis species. These data support a complex distribution and speciation of Cystoseira sl spp. in the Mediterranean, perhaps involving Atlantic clades. The high ecological value of our area of study merits a future protection status as a Special Conservation Area.

Sampling studies in İzmir Bay revealed the occurrence of a pycnogonid species, Ammothella longioculata (Faraggiana, 1940). A. longioculata is reported only one time from the Turkish waters, up to now. The presence of this rare species is reported herein for the first time from the İzmir Bay, and also second time from the Turkish waters. The distribution map of the species in the Mediterranean Sea is provided, together with photographs and line drawings of the species. Moreover, all of the early studies were reviewed on the pycnogonid fauna of İzmir Bay, distribution of each species, depth range, and type of substrate are given.

This article reports the occurrence of the thalloid liverwort Cyathodium denticulatum Udar et Srivastava was collected first time from the Achanakmar – Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve (AABR) Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. It is shown that Cyathodium denticulatum a narrow Himalayan endemic has been reported earlier from Darjeeling, India. There is no record of its occurrence from central India. Cyathodium denticulatum is a rare species known only from eastern Himalayan region. A key to related Indian taxa and taxonomic description is provided.

Three rare species of discomycetes in the family Hyaloscyphaceae are reported from Central Russia (Oryol and Bryansk Regions). Proliferodiscus tricolor is recorded for the first time in Russia. Comments are made on Aeruginoscyphus sericeus and Eriopezia caesia previously reported only from Moscow Region and North Caucasus respectively.

The revision of the herbarium material, collected in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk in 1965–1966 and stored in VNIRO, allowed to expand the taxonomic list of macrophyte algae of the coastal zone of this area. The locations of discovery of 24 previously unmentioned species are described. Myrionema balticum, Ulvella repens, Syncoryne reinkei, Acrochaetium arcuatum were found in the Sea of Okhotsk for the first time. Most species new for the Sea of Okhotsk is represented by epiphytes of the family Ulvellaceae (Chlorophyta). The final taxonomic list of this region, including literature data, consists of 169 species.

This book offers a comprehensive examination of the shape and impact of piracy in the eastern half of the Mediterranean and the Ottoman Empire’s administrative, legal, and diplomatic response. In the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, piracy had a tremendous effect on the formation of international law, the conduct of diplomacy, the articulation of Ottoman imperial and Islamic law, and their application in Ottoman courts. Piracy and Law draws on research in archives and libraries in Istanbul, Venice, Crete, London, and Paris to bring the Ottoman state and Ottoman victims into the story for the first time. It explains why piracy exploded after the 1570s and why the Ottoman state was largely unable to marshal an effective military solution even as it responded dynamically in the spheres of law and diplomacy. By focusing on the Ottoman victims, jurists, and officials who had to contend most with the consequences of piracy, Piracy and Law reveals a broader range of piratical practitioners than the Muslim and Catholic corsairs who have typically been the focus of study and considers their consequences for the Ottoman state and those who traveled through Ottoman waters. This book argues that what made the eastern half of the Mediterranean basin the Ottoman Mediterranean, more than sovereignty or naval supremacy—which was ephemeral—was that it was a legal space. The challenge of piracy helped to define its contours.

During the annual fly survey at Doi Nang Kaew in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai Province of Thailand in 2011, Isomyia paurogonitaFang & Fan, 1986 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Sumatria latifrons Malloch, 1926 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were collected for the first time in Thailand. They are the rare species of the subfamily Rhiniinae (tribe Cosminini). Prior to this finding, fifteen species of Isomyia and two species of Sumatriawere recorded from Thailand. Therefore, 96 blow fly species have been found in this country. These new locality records of both flies are very important for further research on their biology and ecology in Thailand.
