A new engineering methodology is proposed to improve the automation process in monitoring the water quality in a small scale aquaculture system. Behavioural Response Analysis using Vision Engineering Network or BRAVENet is proposed, as a support system to a traditional sensor-based system, to monitor critical water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen. BRAVENet is based on the reactions or behavioural responses of tiger prawns to different water conditions. The performance of both the sensor-based system and BRAVENet are analysed and discussed. It is shown that the BRAVENet can identify unsafe levels of water parameters and is a good monitoring and prediction tool for water conditions especially those instances when industry grade sensors fail or become erroneous. Promising results show that BRAVENet can be used as a support system, if not as a replacement, in continuously monitoring the status of the critical water quality parameters of aquaculture systems.

The paper presents a multiparameter aquaculture water quality tester with a decision support system. A device was developed to aid aquaculture farmers in monitoring water quality parameters and maintaining or achieving optimal levels by suggesting ways on how a farmer can respond to such measurements. The AQUACISION device measures six different water quality parameters; temperature, practical salinity, pH level, total dissolved solid (TDS), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and algae density. Measurements were sent to the AQUACISION application where they were processed to determine the course of action that was best to maintain or achieve optimal levels using fuzzy rules. Based on the comparative result, the AQUACISION was accurate in measuring temperature, practical salinity, pH level, TDS, and ORP during the actual testing. The application also received an excellent rating on the ISO/IEC 25010 software quality model standard

Zooplankton acts as the first level consumer, i.e. transferring energy from producers to second level consumers, zooplankton can be used as study material to find out the quality and fertility of water that is needed to support the use of coastal and marine resources. This study aims to determine the abundance of zooplankton, the types of zooplankton and the relation of water quality parameters with the abundance of zooplankton in Morosari Coastal Water, Demak. Research using methods of surveying and determining the location was chosen using the purposive sampling method, data analysis includes abundance, diversity index, uniformity, dominance, and relationship analysis. The results showed that correlation value between water parameters and abundance of zooplankton is 0,799 (DO), 0,928 (temperature), 0,758 (salinity), -0,019 (pH), -0,138 (current). Based on the results of the water quality parameters, especially DO, temperature, and salinity have a close relationship to the abundance of zooplankton in the waters of Morosari Beach.

Water-quality monitoring is one of the main instruments for water-resource management. This work therefore evaluated the water quality of the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant as well as the relationship between physicochemical water parameters, and analyzed the seasonal variation of water quality parameters as a function of rainfall. The study area encompassed the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant, formed mainly by the drainage areas of the Pelotas stream and its tributary, the Quilombo Stream, located in the city of Pelotas - Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A set of 118,368 data points for each stream was analyzed between 2007 and 2012. The following water quality parameters were evaluated: turbidity, temperature, color, pH, hardness, dissolved oxygen, organic matter, and alkalinity. Results showed that dissolved oxygen and water pH values conformed with Brazilian legislation in the 6 years evaluated. However, water color was the parameter that remained the greatest number of days above the set limits, mainly in the Pelotas Stream. Result indicates the need for conservation actions in the catchment, especially considering the importance of color for the assessment of water quality for public supply, in terms of both treatment costs and of public health. Highest values for water color, turbidity, and organic matter coincided with the occurrence of the highest rainfall values. Agricultural activities may potentiate sedimentation in the contribution basin of the Sinnott water treatment plant.

Wind has a considerable effect on many water quality parameters. Some of the parameters are directly affected by the wind, while others are influenced by other physical water parameters like the velocity, temperature. etc. that are affected by wind and hence transfer their effect to water quality parameters. As the wind has an effect on water quality parameters, also covering waterways has a great effect on the water quality of those covered waterways. This is because covering a waterway alters the concentrations of its water quality parameters. This research is concerned with studying the combined effect of wind and covering of canals on different water quality parameters. The main Sheikh Zayed canal of the New Valley project in Toshka governorate in Egypt is taken as case study. Water quality parameters studied are dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) and total dissolved solids (TDS). Mathematical model was developed in order to carry on the simulation. After simulating the effect of wind and covering on these two water quality parameters it was found that the studied water quality parameters concentrations increased as the wind is gradually increased. Thus, TDS and DO showed maximum increase with increased wind speed and with uncovered canal area. TDS showed the max increase; namely 16%.

The fish cultivation system in several villages in Kalitengah District uses an overtime system, namely a fish cultivation system that is carried out within 1 year (12 months) without passing rice planting. The research objective was to determine the abundance of plankton and the status of water quality fish cultivation “sawah tambak” with overtime system in Kalitengah District Lamongan. This is a quantitative research using descriptive methods. Based on the plankton abundance value at Station 1,2 and 3, the waters in the overtime system of ponds are in the Eutrooph category, with the abundance value > 12,000 Ind / L. Meanwhile station 4,5, and 6 are included in the Oligotrooph category since its abundance <10,000 Ind / L. The diversity value is within the range of 0.714267-1.823 which include in the category of small diversity and low community stability because the value of 0 <H '<1.5. All stations are in a moderate level of pollution which the diversity index value is within the range of 1 <H '<3. The Dominance Index (D) is in the range 0.212-1.224, Station 1 has a high dominance value because of the dominant species, namely Batrachospermum. Water quality parameters at all stations such asthe temperature ranges between 28.8-34.2 0C; the pH 8.5-9.2; Dissolved oxygen  4-10.44 mg / l; ammonia 0.009-0.17 mg / l; phosphate ranges from 0.025-2.3 mg / l. From the measurement results, water quality parameters show a good value for the growth of aquatic organisms.
