In this paper, we report on the “VIsual Dataset for Visually Impaired Persons” (VIDVIP), a dataset for obstacle detection during sidewalk travel. In recent years, there have been many reports on assistive technologies using deep learning and computer vision technologies; nevertheless, developers cannot implement the corresponding applications without datasets. Although a number of open-source datasets have been released by research institutes and companies, large-scale datasets are not as abundant in the field of disability support, owing to their high development costs. Therefore, we began developing a dataset for outdoor mobility support for the visually impaired in April 2018. As of May 1, 2021, we have annotated 538,747 instances for 32,036 images in 39 classes of labels. We have implemented and tested navigation systems and other applications that utilize our dataset. In this study, we first compare our dataset with other general-purpose datasets, and show that our dataset has properties similar to those of datasets for automated driving. As a result of the discussion on the characteristics of the dataset, it is shown that the nature of the image shooting location, rather than the regional characteristics, tends to affect the annotation ratio. Accordingly, it is possible to examine the type of location based on the nature of the shooting location, and to infer the maintenance statuses of traffic facilities (such as Braille blocks) from the annotation ratio.

This paper presents a compact and wearable frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar on a semi-flexible printed circuit board (PCB) for an anti-collision system. This can enable visually impaired people to perceive their environment better and more safely in their everyday lives. In the proposed design, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array with four receivers (RXs) and three transmitters (TXs) has been designed to achieve obstacle-detection ability in both horizontal and vertical planes through a specific geometrical configuration. Operating at 76–81 GHz, an aperture coupled wide-beam patch antenna with two parasitic patches is proposed for each channel of RXs and TXs. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm has been implemented in the radar chip AWR1843 for intermediate frequency (IF) signals to generate a range-Doppler map and search precise target angles in high sensitivity. The complete system, which includes both the MIMO antenna array and the radar chip circuit, is utilized on a six-layer semi-flexible PCB to ensure compactness and ease in wearability. Field testing of the complete system has been performed, and an obstacle-detection range of 7 m (for humans) and 19 m (for larger objects) has been obtained. A wide angular detection range of 64-degree broadside view (±32°) has also been achieved. A voice module has also been integrated to deliver the obstacle’s range and angle information to visually impaired persons.

<p>Visually impaired persons possess a specific set of functional and sensory requirements for their successful existence in architectural environments. Unfortunately, a majority of our existing built infrastructure is ill-equipped to address these requirements. Both existing forms of solution for this issues, technological and architectural, are incapable of compensating for the inadequately considered design of public spaces and are subject to widespread general criticisms from the vision loss and architectural community (Human Rights Commission, 2012; Pawluk et al., 2015).   This thesis recruits the native capabilities of emerging consumer-level digital technologies in order to explore new solutions to this complex problem. This research saw the proposition tested through the development of a digital platform which blended the design strategies of universal design and assistive technologies with a wide range of theoretical perspectives drawn from medical, psychological, sociological, and geolocational literature. The resulting integration generated unique forms of architectural engagement which improve the spatial comprehension abilities of the visually impaired.  The early design outcomes focus on two distinct modes of engagement with a virtual, augmented environment. The first is direct bodily interaction, in which the human-scale perception of the user is bolstered through an object-detection system, which provides users with sensory cues to identify objects in their direct vicinity. The second was the development of various methods for distance-based spatial engagements. Engagement with an environment from a distance significantly expands the scale of potential spatial understanding. These methods allow users to explore spaces in a myriad of different ways, with each mechanic providing different environmental information through diverse sensory outputs. The later design work reflects on these creations and through a process of redevelopment and evaluation draws larger observations regarding the development of the tools and what they offer in terms of spatial understanding. Final conclusions from the thesis provide a framework for research which would allow for the digital adaptation of our currently unsuitable infrastructure.</p>

Currently, several outdoor navigation and orientation electronic traveling aid (ETA) solutions for visually impaired (VI) people are commercially available or in active development. This paper’s survey of blind experts has shown that after outdoor navigation, the second most important ETA feature for VI persons is indoor navigation and orientation (in public institutions, supermarkets, office buildings, homes, etc.). VI persons need ETA for orientation and navigation in unfamiliar indoor environments with embedded features for the detection and recognition of obstacles (not only on the ground but also at head level) and desired destinations such as rooms, staircases, and elevators. The development of such indoor navigation systems, which do not have Global Positioning System (GPS) locational references, is challenging and requires an overview and evaluation of existing systems with different navigation technologies. This paper presents an evaluation and comparison of state-of-the-art indoor navigation solutions, and the research implications provide a summary of the critical observations, some insights, and directions for further developments. The paper maps VI needs in relation to research and development (R&D) trends using the evaluation criteria deemed most important by blind experts.

In This Paper we present a real time domain obstacle detection system for the visually impaired persons to improve their mobility in daily life with the help of obstacle detection sensor installed in their walking stick .System is having a lower cost so it is easily purchasable so it can have a major significance in life of visually impaired persons. This Paper proposes a system to detect any object attached to the floor regardless to their height [1]. Obstacle on the floor in the front of user can be reliably detected in real time using the proposed system implemented by the IR sensor installed on the walk stick of the visually impaired person. Project also contains a navigation system for visually impaired persons to make the life of such persons easier up to some extent. This project is suited for the area where the possibility of blind person is high (like blind school, college)[6]. For transport facility of blind we have first decided the common bus roots of blind then we have placed RF tag to all those buses with unique code. At the second side we have placed RF reader, microcontroller and voice processor. The RF reader receive unique code, microcontroller process this code with defined code, if match found, voice processor get activated and starts speaking bus name, initial destination and final destination. The obstacle detection is also included in the project with voice. The system aims at increasing the mobility of visually impaired people by offering new sensing abilities.

Analisar o conceito de promoção da saúde da pessoa com deficiência visual segundo Walker e Avant. Após delimitação do conceito a ser analisado, foi realizada revisão integrativa da literatura em seis bases de dados utilizando-se os descritores: pessoa com deficiência visual e promoção da saúde. Procedeu-se à análise do conceito mediante leitura dos artigos selecionados. Educação em saúde e tecnologias assistivas adaptadas às pessoas com deficiência visual e, ações de prevenção foram identificados como atributos essenciais. Necessidades de acessibilidade, de promoção da saúde de forma acessível e de reorientação dos serviços de saúde contemplaram os principais antecedentes; e, mudanças de comportamento, empoderamento e melhoria da qualidade de vida foram definidos como consequentes.
