This paper presents an attractive force estimation system and an automatic activation system for an electropermanent magnet (EPM) for an inspection UAV. Adsorption to infrastructures for inspection at a distance is extremely difficult to perform safely because the operator cannot detect the state of adsorption of the drone equipped with a magnetic adsorption device. Therefore, in this paper, we clarify the relationship between the magnetic flux density and attractive force of the EPM through experiments, and develop an estimation algorithm for the attractive force based on the results. An automatic activation system, using the induced voltage in the coil when the EPM approaches the magnetic substance, is developed and mounted on a quadrotor for a flight experiment along with the estimation system for the attractive force. The developed system is verified using flight and adsorption experiments on the quadrotor.

An effective method is proposed in this paper for calculating the transient magnetic field and induced voltage in the photovoltaic bracket system under lightning stroke. Considering the need for the lightning current responses on various branches of the photovoltaic bracket system, a brief outline is given to the equivalent circuit model of the photovoltaic bracket system. The analytic formulas of the transient magnetic field are derived from the vector potential for the tilted, vertical and horizontal branches in the photovoltaic bracket system. With a time–space discretization scheme put forward for theses formulas, the magnetic field distribution in an assigned spatial domain is determined on the basis of the lightning current responses. The magnetic linkage passing through a conductor loop is evaluated by the surface integral of the magnetic flux density and the induced voltage is obtained from the time derivative of the magnetic linkage. In order to check the validity of the proposed method, an experiment is made on a reduced-scale photovoltaic bracket system. Then, the proposed method is applied to an actual photovoltaic bracket system. The calculations are performed for the magnetic field distributions and induced voltages under positive and negative lightning strokes.

Abstract In recent years, robotic applications have been improved for better object manipulation and collaboration with human. With this motivation, the detection of objects has been studied with serial elastic parallel gripper by simple touching in case of no visual data available. A series elastic gripper, capable of detecting geometric properties of objects is designed using only elastic elements and absolute encoders instead of tactile or force/torque sensors. The external force calculation is achieved by employing an estimation algorithm. Different objects are selected for trials for recognition. A Deep Neural Network model is trained by synthetic data extracted from STL file of selected objects . For experimental set-up, the series elastic parallel gripper is mounted on a Staubli RX160 robot arm and objects are placed in pre-determined locations in the workspace. All objects are successfully recognized using the gripper, force estimation and the DNN model. The best DNN model capable of recognizing different objects with the average prediction value ranging from 71% to 98%. Hence the proposed design of gripper and the algorithm achieved the recognition of selected objects without need for additional force/torque or tactile sensors.

In order to improve the angle measurement performance of a coprime linear array, this paper proposes a novel direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for a coprime linear array based on the multiple invariance estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (MI-ESPRIT) and a lookup table method. The proposed algorithm does not require a spatial spectrum search and uses a lookup table to solve ambiguity, which reduces the computational complexity. To fully use the subarray elements, the DOA estimation precision is higher compared with existing algorithms. Moreover, the algorithm avoids the matching error when multiple signals exist by using the relationship between the signal subspace of two subarrays. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this article, a novel electro-mechanical energy conversion model of power harvesting from the vibration-induced the piezoelectric stator of the traveling wave rotary ultrasonic motor was proposed. Based on the curvature basis approach, the relationship between the deduced voltage and the mechanical stain induced by piezoelectric polarization was formulated. In addition to the relationships between the maximum induced voltages at the resonance frequency, the conversion energy density and the dimensions of the piezoelectric stator were also derived. The analytical model shows that the vibration-induced voltage is proportional to the exciting electrical voltage magnitude and square of height of the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) but is inversely proportional to the permittivity of PZT and the damping coefficient of the stator. Some simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the maximum output voltage coincides with the energy conversion analytical model.

Asymmetric windows are of increasing interest to researchers because of the nonlinear and adjustable phase response, as well as alterable time delay. Short-time phase distortion can provide an essential improvement in speech coding, and also has better performance in speech recognition. The merits of asymmetric windows in the aspect of spectral behaviors have an important function in frequency component detection and parameter estimation. In this paper, the phase response of windows were further studied, and the phase characteristics of symmetric and asymmetric windows are described. The relationship between the barycenter of windows in the time domain, and the phase characteristic at the center of the main lobe in the frequency domain, was established. In light of the relationship, an improved version of the asymmetric window- based frequency estimation algorithm was proposed. The improved algorithm has advantages of straightforward implementation and computational efficiency. The numeric simulation results also indicate that the improved approach is more robust than the traditional method against additive random noise.

Concentrated stresses and residual ones are critical for the metal structures’ health, because they can cause microcracks that require emergency maintenance or can result in potential accidents. Therefore, an accurate approach to the measurement of stresses is key for ensuring the health of metal structures. The eddy current technique is an effective approach to detect the stress according to the piezoresistive effect. However, it is limited to detect the surface stress due to the skin effect. In engineering, the stress distribution is inhomogeneous; therefore, to predict the inhomogeneous stress distribution, this paper proposes a nondestructive approach which combines the eddy current technique and finite element (FE) method. The experimental data achieved through the eddy current technique determines the relationship between the applied force and the magnetic flux density, while numerical simulations through the FE method bridge the relationship between the magnetic flux density and the stress distribution in different directions. Therefore, we can predict the inhomogeneous stress nondestructively. As a case study, the applied stress in a three-point-bending simply supported beam was evaluated, and the relative error is less than 8% in the whole beam. This approach can be expected to predict the residual stress in metal structures, such as rail and vehicle structures, if the stress distribution pattern is known.

Chills (goose bumps or shivers) evoked by listening to one’s favorite music are an indicator of a rewarding experience. The current study examined the relationship between individual differences in general reward sensitivity and music-evoked chills. To assess this relationship, we measured the three subscales of the behavioral activation system (BAS) and the frequency and intensity of music-evoked chills in a large-sample survey (Study 1) and a psychophysiological experiment (Study 2). One result observed in both studies was that people with high BAS reward responsiveness experienced more intense chills from music. Moreover, the results showed that the experience of chills induced highly pleasurable emotions and psychophysiological arousal. The present study suggests that general reward sensitivity is a predictor of music-evoked chills. Although music is just a sequence of tones and not clearly related to survival value, music could create a rewarding experience partially similar to other rewarding actions or events.

The rack force is valuable information for a vehicle dynamics control system, as it relates closely to the road conditions and steering feel. Since there is no direct measurement of rack force in current steering systems, various rack force estimation methods have been proposed to obtain the rack force information. In order to get an accurate rack force estimate, it is important to have knowledge of the steering system friction. However, it is hard to have an accurate value of friction, as it is subject to variation due to operation conditions and material wear. Especially for the widely used column-assisted electric power steering (C-EPAS) system, the load-dependent characteristic of its worm gear friction has a significant effect on rack force estimation. In this paper, a rack force estimation method using a Kalman filter and a load-dependent friction estimation algorithm is introduced, and the effect of C-EPAS friction on rack force estimator performance is investigated. Unlike other rack force estimation methods, which assume that friction is known a priori, the proposed system uses a load-dependent friction estimation algorithm to determine accurate friction information in the steering system, and then a rack force is estimated using the relationship between steering torque and angle. The effectiveness of this proposed method is verified by carsim/simulink cosimulation.

Cable tension force is one of the most important structural parameters to monitor in cable-stayed bridges. For example, cable tension needs to be monitored during construction and maintenance to ensure the bridge is not overloaded. To economically monitor tension forces, this study proposes the use of an automated wireless tension force estimation system (WFTES) developed solely for cable force estimation. The design of the WFTES system can be divided into two parts: low-cost hardware and automated software. The low-cost hardware consists of an integrated platform containing a wireless sensing unit constructed from commercial off-the-shelf components, a low-cost commercial MEMS accelerometer, and a signal conditioning board for signal amplification and filtering. With respect to the automated software, a vibration-based algorithm using estimated modal parameters and information on the cable sag and bending stiffness is embedded into the wireless sensing unit. Since modal parameters are inputs to the algorithm, additional algorithms are necessary to extract modal features from measured cable accelerations. To validate the proposed WFTES, a scaled-down cable model was constructed in the laboratory using steel rope wire. The wire was exposed to broad-band excitations while the WFTES recorded the cable response and embedded algorithms interrogated the measured acceleration to estimate tension force. The results reveal the embedded algorithms properly identify the lower natural frequencies of the cable and make accurate estimates of cable tension. This paper concludes with a summary of the salient research findings and suggestions for future work.

The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect is observed in flowing electrolytic fluids and their interactions with magnetic fields. The magnetic field (B0), when perpendicular with the electrolytic fluid flow (μ), causes the shift of the charged particles in the fluid to shift across the length of the vessel (L) normal to the plane of B0 and flow, creating a voltage (VMHD) observable through voltage potential measurements across the flow (Eqn. 1)[1].(1)VMHD=∫0Lu⇀×B0⇀·dL⇀In the medical field, this phenomenon is commonly encountered inside of a human body inside of an MRI machine (Fig. 1). The effect appears most prominently inside the aortic arch due to orientation and size, and is a large contributing factor to noise observed in intra-MRI ECGs [2, 3]. Traditionally, this MHD induced voltage (VMHD) was filtered out to obtain clean intra-MRI ECGs, but recent studies have shown that the VMHD induced in a vessel is related to the blood flow through it (stroke volume in the case of the aortic arch) [4]. Further proof of this relationship can be shown from the increase in VMHD measured from periphery blood vessels during periods of elevated heart rate from exercise stress, when compared to baseline state [5]. Previously, a portable device was built to utilize induced VMHD as an indicator of flow [6]. The device was capable of showing change in blood flow, utilizing a blood flow metric obtained from VMHD, however a quantitative relationship between VMHD and blood flow has yet to be established. This study aims to define the relationship between induced VMHD and magnetic field strength in a controlled setting. Through modulating the distance between a pair of magnets around a flow channel, we hope to better realize the relationship between magnetic field strength and induced VMHD with constant flow and electrolytic solution concentration.
