Background: Thymus species are well-known as medicinal plants. It was aimed to investigate the chemical composition of Thymus pectinatus (TP) and its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, and angiogenic activities. Materials and Methods: After essential oil of TP (EO-TP) was obtained with clevenger distillation system, it was analyzed for chemical composition with GC-MS. To study antispasmodic activity, eight male Wistar albino rats each weighing approximately 250-300 g were used. Results: The results of the analysis revealed 19 components, which equals to 92.93 of the essential oil. The following are the main components; thymol (48.77%), m-cymene (9.15%), isoborneol (5.19%), trans-caryophyllene (4.43%), carvacrol (3.91%) and -terpinene (3.54%). It has been found that microorganisms subjected to whole all of microbiological tests are highly resistant to EO-TP. 2,2- diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl radical, along with superoxide radical scavenging, and lipid peroxidation says were utilized to show the antioxidant activities of the EO-TP. In measuring its effect, 0.1 mg/mL and 0.5 mg/mL dosage of the EO-TP was applied to the rat ileum as a result of which the magnitude and the frequency of the contractions were observed to be significantly. Conclusion: It was also understood that EO-TP had angiogenic effect upon the vein system of the embryos of chicks. There is a need for further studies to clarify the mechanisms of antimicrobial, antioxidant and angiogenic effects and to determine the constituents of EO-TP responsible from these effects, especially the angiogenic.

The different extracts of Holoptelea integrifolia (H.integrifolia) leaves, stem bark and fruits were studied as a potent natural source of antimicrobial, antioxidant and wound healing potential. This work was carried out to evaluate antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of different extracts of H.integrifolia. The antimicrobial activity of the H.integrifolia ethanolic extract was studied against five fungal and bacterial strains by utilizing the agar well diffusion method and MIC. Among several strain, the ethanolic extract of fruit has shown higher antimicrobial inhibition zone as 9.25-16 mm compare to other two extracts of stem and leaves as 10- 13.25 mm and 6-10.2 mm respectively. The antioxidant activities for different extract were also determined by DPPH free radical assay, Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging and Nitric Oxide Radical Scavenging Activity method. The anti-inflammatory activity also estimated basedon formalin induced paw edema method on Wistar albino rats. The different extracts of leaves, stem bark and fruit parts of Holoptelea integrifolia were estimated for in vivo anti-inflammatory activity against the animal model of female Wistar albino rats. The results of anti-inflammatory activity revealed that the Ethanol extracts showed vital and dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effects. Our findings revealed that aerial parts of H.integrifolia contais potential antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, which expose the medicinal potential of the selected plant could be a significant drug candidates against microbial, oxidative and inflammation-related pathological processes as a future alternative medicine.

The chemical composition of Tornabenea bischoffii J. A. Schmidt essential oil from Cape Verde was studied by GC and GC/MS. Sixty volatile compounds were identified of which myristicin was the major constituent (33.6%). Using the 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging method and the in vitro assay for prevention of lipid peroxidation by thiobarbituric reactive species, significant antioxidant activities were evidenced.

The chemical composition of the hydrodistilled leaf essential oil from Pulicaria stephanocarpa Balf Fil was determined by GC-MS analysis, and its antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticholinesterase (AChE) activities were evaluated. Eighty-three compounds were identified representing 97.2% of the total oil. ( E)-Caryophyllene 13.4%, ( E)-nerolidol 8.5%, caryophyllene oxide 8.5%, α-cadinol 8.2% spathulenol 6.8% and τ-cadinol 4.7%, were the main components. Antimicrobial activity of the oil, evaluated using the disc diffusion and broth dilution methods, demonstrated the highest susceptibility on Gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans. The free radical scavenging ability of the oil was assessed by the DPPH assay to show antiradical activity with IC50 of 330 μg/mL. Moreover, the oil revealed an AChE inhibitory activity of 47% at a concentration of 200 μg/mL using Ellman's method.

Purpose. The purpose of this study is to determine the antifungal and antioxidant activities of the essential oil fromAngelica koreana.Methods. Essential oil was obtained from the dried roots ofA. koreanaby steam distillation, and its composition was identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the oil fraction and its main components were determined by broth dilution assay using common pathogenicAspergillusandTrichophytonspecies. The combined effects of the oils with itraconazole were evaluated using a checkerboard titer test. In addition, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) free radical scavenging, nitrite inhibition, and reducing power were determined to assess the antioxidant activity of this oil.Results. The essential oil fraction and its main components showed inhibitory activity against all of the tested fungi, with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 250–1000 μg/mL. Furthermore, this oil exhibited synergism when combined with itraconazole.Conclusion. In the treatment of infections caused byAspergillusandTrichophytonspecies, combining itraconazole with eitherA. koreanaessential oil or its main components may reduce the minimum effective dose of itraconazole required and, thus, minimize its side effects. In addition, this oil is a promising source of natural antioxidant agents.

The chemical composition of hydrodistilled oil from the fruit residue of Ficus altissima was analyzed for the first time by GC/GC–MS. As a result, a total of seventeen compounds were identified, representing all of the oil. Aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters and alkylenes were found to compose three major chemotype accounted for 64.25%, 26.00% and 9.75% of the oil, respectively. The main components was demonstrated to be dibutyl phthalate(18.14%), n-docosane(7.94%), diisooctyl phthalate(7.86%), n-heptadecane(7.70%), n-tricosane(7.68%), phytane(7.19%). Antioxidant activity of the oil was assessed by the free radical scavenging (DPPH). The study offers theoretic basis for pharmaceutical utilization of the landscape plant F. altissima.

Essential oil (EO) of Laurus nobilis, from Tunisian, France and Austrian were screened for their chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and compared. GC-MS analysis showed that leaves of Tunisian L. nobilis had camphor (34.43%), 1,8-cineole (20.21%) and α-terpineol (7%) as major components. France and Austrian EOs had a high content of 1,8-cineole (45.8% and 43.4%, respectively) followed by bornyl acetate (13.8% and 17.7% respectively) and methyl eugenol (7.7% and 10.9% respectively). Antioxidant potential was measured by ABTS and DPPH tests. Tunisian L. nobilis EO showed greater radical scavenging by ABTS activity (IC50=44.8±0.1 mg/L) than the France and Austrian EOs (76.4±3.2 mg/L and 81.4±4.0 mg/L, respectively). However, for DPPH test system, French and Austrian EOs activities were excellent (IC50=176.1±5.1 mg/L and 236.3±2.9 mg/L respectively) then Tunisian L. nobilis EO (IC50=2859.7±99.0 mg/L). A good Antimicrobial activity was observed on the yeasts and fungi for all EOs. Tunisian laurel EO show a better antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonial, E. coli and Salmonella enterica CMI: 0.004 mg/ml) than gram-positive ones (Bacilus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes CMI: 0.01 mg/ml). A significant antifungal activity of Tunisian EO was also observed against fungi and yeasts species (CMI: 0.004 mg/ml). France essential oil shows better activities against all organisms tested wail Austrian oil activity is more important against yeasts species tested and Mucor ramannianus (fungi).  Chemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Tunisian L. nobilis essential oil, were different from that of France and Austrian and it give the opportunity for its uses in new pharmaceuticals and natural therapies of infectious diseases.

The composition of essential oil isolated from Salvia fruticosa, wild growing in Libya, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Forty-five compounds could be identified. The essential oil contained 1,8-cineole (49.34%), camphor (7.53%), ?-pinene (7.38%), myrcene (7.38%), ?-pinene (5.15%), ?-caryophyllene (4.13%) and ?-terpineol (3.25). Antioxidant activity was analyzed using the DPP H free radical scavenging method and low antioxidant activity was found (IC50 = 15.53 mg/ml). The oil was also screened for its antimicrobial activity against eight bacteria (four Gram-negative and four Gram-positive) and eight fungi. The essential oil of S. fruticosa showed minimal inhibitory activity (MIC) at 0.125-1.5 mg/ml and bactericidal (MBC) at 0.5-2.0 mg/ml. In addition, it exhibited fungistatic (MIC) at 0.125-1.0 mg/ml and fungicidal effect (MFC) at 0.125-1.5 mg/ml.

Background: The genus Thymus is one of the well-known members of the Lamiaceae, which comprises about 215 species. It is a polymorphic genus in this family. Therefore, possible differences in chemical composition among polymorphs may result in differences in their biological activities. Objective: This study was designed to specify chemical composition in order to assess antioxidant activities and to characterize active constituents of essential oil from Thymus pubescens. Methods: Essential oil was collected by hydrodistillation and was analyzed using GC-MS and GC-FID. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by ABTS radical cation scavenging and β-carotene bleaching inhibition methods. Detection and identification of antioxidant components were performed by TLC-bioautography assay using ABTS•+ reagent. Results: GC analyses indicated the presence of 39 components, accounting for 96.64% of total constituents, with thymol (38.67%), γ-terpinene (7.46%), and p-cymene (5.54%) as the main components. The IC50 values for antioxidant activities were equal to 1.15 (1.05 – 1.25) μg/mL and 0.45 (0.33 – 0.62) μg/mL for ABTS•+ scavenging and β-carotene bleaching inhibition tests, respectively. TLC-bioautograpgy of oil resulted in identification of thymol as the major antioxidant compound. Conclusion: Essential oil exhibited very potent and significant antioxidant activities correlated well with increasing dose in vitro.
