Code-Switching as a Communication Strategy in Educational Settings

The study attempts to analyze the types of communication strategies used in English classroom presentation by the English education students of UNIMUDA Sorong and the reasons why they used the strategy. The study took place at UNIMUDA Sorong in TEFL class where 30 students were participated and observed during their presentation activity in this subject. The study employed descriptive method, where the data obtained through open interviewed and video recording. The result showed that from twelve features of communication strategies, there are six of them that the students used during presentation. They are appoximation, circumlocation, examplification, word coinages, code switching and use fo fillers. Circumlocation was used because the students wanted to make direct contact to the students in order to make the successful teaching and learning process. Examplification was used because it can reflect the meaning of the concept. Word coinages was used because they might forget the appropriate words/term. Code switching was used because they felt more comfortable in case she combined between Bahasa Indonesia and the English language. Use of fillers was used because the strategy was very significant particularly second or foreign language speaker. The most frequently communication strategy that the students used is use of fillers.

The aim of this study is to investigate the goals of Code-Switching and Code-Mixing and how it is used in a communicative strategy among the stand banners in Lombok Epicentrum Mall (LEM). Data were collected by documenting with pictures of stand banners at several outlets in LEM. The method used in analyzing the data is qualitative in approach by identifying, classifying, describing and explaining the code-switching and the code mixing data in the corpus and how they have been used to promote the products sold at the stores. The result shows that the purposes of using Code-Switching and Code-Mixing as a communication strategy in their promotion and it also shows that code mixing is more dominant than code switching. The advertisers mix-match the languages that they use with English and Bahasa Indonesia because they assume that these practices are the right ones and matching Indonesian words into English makes it sound cooler instead of using Bahasa Indonesia. This indicates that English signifies a high culture and class status while Indonesian is inferior in status. In fact, being commonly used in numerous stand banners for a long period of time, the mixing use of Indonesian and English as well as matching the sounds in the languages have been very common and accepted in Indonesian discourse practices. Therefore, the implication that they communicate their business strategy of promotion their products by using CS and CM is to inform and attract the customers that they are in a higher level or class, thus, it acquires them to communicate or promoted like so.


The sociolinguistic phenomenon of Code-Switching (CS) was addressed in dramatically different academic contexts where English is spoken as a first language (L1) (i.e., inner circle), as a second language (i.e., outer circle), as well as where English is spoken as a foreign language (EFL) (i.e., expanding circle). Nevertheless, very few studies examined the issue of CS among undergraduate students in expanding circle countries such as Algeria. Basically, this study sought to find answers that would, firstly, help apprehend the overriding reason (s) that stimulate the occurrence of CS in the third year students' oral production, secondly, identify the communicative functions of English-Arabic CS in the students' class interaction, and thirdly, gauge its practicality and effectiveness in multilingual classes. Following a qualitative research approach, a case study design was adopted with a purposively (deliberately) chosen sample. Accordingly, data were collected by means of two tools of inquiry, namely observation and an unstructured questionnaire. The findings revealed that the underlying factor that prompted the occurrence of language-switching was the linguistic interference that germinated from the students' L1, among other subsidiary linguistic factors. Furthermore, it was found that CS grants its appliers the opportunity to reiterate what they exactly said in another way, to hold the floor and continue speaking for an extended period, and to insist on what was being communicated. Regarding CS technique, it was concluded that it might be considered as a productive and, simultaneously, a detrimental communication strategy to develop EFL students’ speaking competence. Finally, the findings of this study supported the initially formulated hypotheses, and, thus, reported positive results.

<p class="1"><span lang="X-NONE">Code-switching is an observed common discourse linguistic behaviour in Zimbabwean popular dramas. The motives and effects of the use of code-switching in such communicative contexts is however an understudied area. This article examines the communicative impact/effects on the audience, of code-switching as a communication strategy in <em>Studio 263</em>, one of Zimbabwe’s popular dramas (soap operas). Observing that code-switching has become part and parcel of Zimbabwean everyday discourses – a situation chiefly resulting from the Zimbabwean linguistic situation characterised by bi/multilingual societies – the analysis explores the rhetorical and communicative potential of code-switching as a communication strategy within the communicative contexts that popular dramas represent and in a bi/multilingual society. The Zimbabwean language situation promotes the use of the English language in all formal communicative events while the ‘indigenous’ languages (Shona and Ndebele) do not enjoy similar privileges. Because English is a second language to the majority of the residents of Zimbabweans, this has resulted in the proliferation of bi/multilingual communities. This article critiques the justification of the use of code-switching in <em>Studio 263</em> as well as its use as a tool for communicating to a ‘larger’ audience.</span></p>

Introduction. The article deals with artistic bilingualism which is interpreted as the creative use of two languages in creating works of literature based on precise understanding of the specific features of semantic and pragmatic potential of these languages. The purpose of the article is to identify the features of artistic bilingualism in the work of the modern Udmurt poet B. Anfinogenov. Materials and Methods. The main source of research is the collection of B. Anfinogenov’s poetry “Aishet of the future”. The methodological framework includes linguistic analysis of poetic texts, synthesis and generalization of the achievements in literary studies, structural analysis, etc. The research is based on the use of the descriptive method as well as the method of full coverage and methods of contextual and situational-contextual analysis. Results and Discussion. Based on the analysis of the poetry of the young Udmurt author Bogdan Anfinogenov, it was revealed that one of the techniques inherent in the bilingual communication strategy is the use of code switching, which performs various functions. In addition to the traditional thematic function, emotional, decorative, recipient, factual and emphatic functions of code switching, artistic bilingualism in the work of this author draws the reader’s attention to the Udmurt language and culture. Also, the Udmurt poet deliberately emphasizes changes in the social environment and orientation towards Western culture. In other words, the use of code switching introduces additional semantic nuances into the literary text, a certain system of values, a certain type of modal-emotional meanings. Conclusion. The main constituent elements of code switching are language units representing all language levels: phonetic, morphological, syntactic. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of code switching, represented at the level of the graphic system of the Udmurt language.

This study was aimed at exploring the use of code switching (CS) as interlanguage communication strategy by EFL students when they were communicating in English. Particularly, this study tried to describe the patterns of CS as communication strategy and factors that contributed to the use of the CS as communication strategy by the EFL learners. It was a qualitative research using 30 students of one of Junior High School in Surakarta as research subjects. The data were collected through elicitation technique in which the research subjects were given a task to describe a cartoon. Their utterances were recorded and used as primary data source. Utterances that contained CS were identified and used as primary data. The data were analyzed qualitatively by inductive techniques, using Dornyei and Myers-Scotton analysis frameworks. The research findings were then interpreted based on relevant theory. The results showed that the students used three types of CS, namely tag code switching, intra-sentential code switching and inter-sentential code switching. Three factors identified as the reasons of the use of CS as communication strategy were bilingual, limited mastery of English and as a compensation strategy. It can be concluded that the use of CS by EFL learners is a natural and unavoidable phenomenon since this represents one of the communication strategies to compensate for the EFL learners' limited mastery of the target language they are learning. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi penggunaan alih kode sebagai strategi komunikasi bahasa antar pembelajar bahasa Inggris di Indonesia. Secara khusus, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pola alih kode dan faktor yang berkontribusi pada penggunaan alih kode tersebut sebagai strategi komunikasi oleh pembelajar bahasa Inggris. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan subjek penelitian 30 siswa dari salah satu SMP di Surakarta. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik elisitasi, yang dilakukan dengan memberikan tugas kepada subjek penelitian untuk mendeskripsikan sebuah kartun. Ucapan mereka direkam dan digunakan sebagai sumber data primer. Ucapan yang mengandung alih kode diidentifikasi dan digunakan sebagai data primer. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dengan teknik induktif yang menggunakan kerangka analisis Dornyei & Myers-Scotton. Temuan penelitian kemudian diinterpretasikan berdasarkan teori yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan tiga jenis alih kode, yaitu alih kode tag, alih kode intrasentensial, dan alih kode antarsentensial. Tiga faktor yang berkontribusi terhadap penggunaan alih kode tersebut adalah kedwibahasaan, penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang terbatas, dan sebagai strategi kompensasi. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan alih kode oleh pembelajar bahasa Inggris merupakan fenomena alami dan tidak dapat dihindari dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Hal ini merupakan salah satu strategi komunikasi untuk mengompensasi keterbatasan penguasaan bahasa sasaran.

The last decades have seen the active embracement of classroom multilingualism in educational settings. The relevance of this study is justified by the increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in Western societies, the high demand for teachers who understand the value of multilingualism, have deep knowledge of multilingual language practices, are able and willing to provide an appropriate learning environment for language learners. The main objective of the study is to investigate the pre-service language teachers’ beliefs about crosslinguistic pedagogy, code-switching, and codemixing as the leading examples of this pedagogy in educational settings. An online questionnaire was shared among teacher candidates (n=20) enrolled in teacher education programs at the University of Hamburg. The respondents were asked to answer the questions concerning their background and to mark on a Likert scale whether they agreed with the statements provided to them or would find the implementation of certain methodology useful. The findings suggest positive attitudes towards multilingualism and a high level of awareness regarding the importance of previously acquired languages for subsequent language teaching and learning. However, some discrepancies between knowledge, beliefs, and practice are indicated. The results allow us to conclude that target-language-only use in language classes is still a highly desirable goal for pre-service language teachers. Some possible implications for curriculum development arising from the study are discussed.

This paper is aimed to discuss about the concept of Theme and Rheme in relation with children code switching study case at Bale Lumbung Residence, district Labuapi. Theme and Rheme was firstly introduced by M.A.K Halliday in 1985. The reason why those terms are used in this study due to they are considered more appropriate in the present framework rather than Topic and Comment as what some grammarians used earlier. Considering Theme and Rheme as newer approach in analyzing a message, so those are relevant to measure the content of code switching. Data was taken ethnographically by recording and interviewing technique in this descriptive qualitative research. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive qualitative method through four steps, i,e. data reduction, data description, data grouping, and conclusion. The results of this study show that firstly, theme and rheme are found in children Sasak – Indonesian code switching. Secondly, code switching is used as communication strategy, to show their local identity, and to confirm that they are skilled in terms of use two languages within a communicative event.

This research aimed to describe code switching who used by the Teachers and the students especially kinds and functions to contribute to the interaction in conversation in the classroom. Codeswitching is an alternate use of two or more languages in the same utterance or conversation in a bilingual or multilingual conversation. Previous research has established that code-switching can be interpreted as a resource for bilingual or multilingual children to accomplish specific communicative goals. However, code-switching in educational settings has not been welcomed. Previous research has reported that code-switching in an educational context is considered as a deficit of interactional skills. To describe the functions, the researcher used a descriptive research which was conducted observation and interview. The location of this research was taken from the eighth-grade students of SMAN 1 Tombolo Pao, Gowa Regency with a number of the subject were 2 teachers and 36 students. The research findings of the study showed that teachers do code-switch in the conversation in the classroom, despite their claim that they do not. The English teachers used English and Indonesian. The English teachers made code switching for (1) to make questions, (2) unpleasant feeling, (3) to strengthen request or command, (4) repetition used for clarification reiteration of a message, (5) to give advice, (6) to create humor. And the students' used code switching to made they are easy to speak English and easy to understand what they want to say. Switching from English to Indonesian or other languages can also be employed as the communication strategy in English conversation classroom. The English teachers employ code switching to minimize either student's miscomprehension on the lesson or students’ difficulties in understanding the English lesson given by the English teachers in the classroom.Keywords: Code Switching, Teacher and Students Conversation

Code-switching is a widespread phenomenon used as a communicative resource both in natural and educational settings. This is very common in bilingual and multilingual settings but not in educational ones. There are varying attitudes towards the use of code switching. The present study was to investigate students’ attitudes towards teachers’ code-switching in EFL classes. Moreover, gender differences in students’ attitudes were observed. To this end, a four-section 20-item questionnaire developed by Yao (2011) was distributed to students. They were also supposed to answer the question regarding their gender identity at the top of the questionnaire. The data were tabulated, and frequencies and percentages were conducted by SPSS program. The findings displayed that students totally had positive attitudes towards code-switching used by teachers in EFL classes. However, there were some situations in which they were not interested in it. Furthermore, this study showed that gender does not cause any significant differences in students’ attitudes.
