Abstract Background: Previous studies have shown that lipid ratios [total cholesterol (TC)/high-densitylipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP, lg [triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C]), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/HDLC, non-HDL-C/HDL-C] were associated with the risk of diabetes in non-hypertension population. However, the relationship between different lipid ratios and diabetes is unclear in the H-type hypertension population. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between lipid ratios and diabetes in Chinese adults with H- type hypertension.Methods: The current study included 13,581 H-type hypertension participants from the China hypertension registry study. Logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting were used to assess the association between different lipid ratios and diabetes.Results: Prevalence of diabetes was 17.8%. All lipid ratios (TC/HDL-C, AIP, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C) were positively and independently associated with diabetes. In the fully adjusted model, AIP manifested the largest ORs of diabetes (OR:2.84, 95%CI:2.37-3.41). However, the fully adjusted ORs (95%CI) of TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C and non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratio was only 1.34 (1.27, 1.43), 1.40 (1.29, 1.51), 1.42 (1.35, 1.50), respectively. Comparing the area under receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC), we found that AIP had the stronger ability to identify diabetes.Conclusions: all lipid ratios (TC/HDL-C, AIP, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C) were independently and positively correlated with the risk of diabetes in the Chinese population with H-type hypertension. Compared with other lipid ratios (TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C), AIP was superior in discriminating diabetes.

Abstract Background Current studies support lipid ratios [the total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio; the triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C ratio; the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL -C)/HDL-C ratio; and non-HDL-C] as reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, whether lipid ratios could serve as markers for hyperuricemia (HUA) remains unclear due to limited research. This study aimed to explore the association between lipid ratios and HUA in hypertensive patients. Methods The data from 14,227 Chinese hypertensive individuals in the study were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting models examined the relationship between lipid ratios and HUA. Results The results showed positive associations between the lipid ratios and HUA (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, lipid ratios were converted from continuous variables to tertiles. Compared to the lowest tertile, the fully adjusted ORs (95 % CI) of the TC/HDL-C ratio, the TG/HDL-C ratio, the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C in the highest tertile were 1.79 (1.62, 1.99), 2.09 (1.88, 2.32), 1.67 (1.51, 1.86), and 1.93 (1.74, 2.13), respectively (all P < 0.001). Conclusions The study suggested that high lipid ratios (TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C) are associated with HUA in a Chinese hypertensive population. This study’s findings further expand the scope of the application of lipid ratios. These novel and essential results suggest that lipid ratio profiles might be potential and valuable markers for HUA. Background.The apolipoprotein (apo) B/apoA-I ratio represents the balance between apoB-rich atherogenic particles and apoA-I-rich antiatherogenic particles, and this ratio is considered to be a marker of cardiovascular risk. Although many studies have demonstrated the importance of the apoB/apoA-I ratio in predicting the presence or absence of cardiovascular disease, less is known about apoB/apoA-I ratio as a marker of plasma atherogenicity.Methods.A total of 157 normolipidemic men aged 20–59 years were included in the study. The plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apoA-I, apoB, and apoE were determined after a 12 h fasting period.Results. The median of the apoB/apoA-I ratio in the studied normolipidemic subjects was 0.52, with values ranging from 0.19 to 2.60. The percentage of subjects with the apoB/apoA-I ratio exceeding 0.9 (the accepted risk value of cardiovascular disease) was 19.1%. The subjects with apoB/apoA-I>0.9 were characterized by higher TG levels and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and lower values of ratio of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to apoB (LDL-C/apoB) and apoE levels compared with men with apoB/apoA-I<0.9.Conclusion. Despite normolipidemia, the subjects with the unfavorable apoB/apoA-I ratio had more atherogenic lipid profile.

Abstract Background: Current studies support nontraditional lipid profiles [total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C ratio, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL -C)/HDL-C ratio, non-HDL-C] as reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. However, whether nontraditional lipid profiles can be used as reliable markers for hyperuricemia (HUA) remains unclear due to limited research. The present study investigated the relationship of nontraditional lipid profiles with HUA in hypertensive patients.Methods: We analyzed data from 13,721 Chinese hypertensive population untreated with lipid-lowering drugs. The relationship between non-traditional lipid profiles and HUA was examined by multivariate logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting (penalized spline method).Results: The results showed that there were positive associations of TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C with HUA, respectively (all P <0.001). Furthermore, nontraditional lipid profiles were converted from continuous variables to tertiles. Compared with lowest tertile, the multivariate adjusted ORs (95% CI) of TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and non-HDL-C in highest tertile were 1.79 (1.62, 1.99), 2.09 (1.88, 2.32), 1.67 (1.51, 1.86), 1.93 (1.74, 2.13), respectively (all P <0.001).Conclusions: In Chinese hypertensive population, there were positive associations between nontraditional lipid profiles (TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C) and HUA. Our findings further expand the scope of application of nontraditional lipid profiles. These novel and important results suggest that nontraditional lipid profiles can be used as potential and valuable indicators of HUA, and provide a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of HUA.

Background: Hyperlipidemia is one of the important risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease in post menopausal women.Our study compared the serum lipid profile and atherogenic index of plasma between premenopausal and post menopausal women.Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in Kathmandu Medical College. A total number of 194 women in the age group 30 to 60 years were studied. They include 108 postmenopausal women and 86 premenopausal controls. Total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides were determined. Results: The mean value of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride were significantly increased in postmenopausal women when compared to premenopausal women. There was increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in postmenopausal women but the difference was not significant. The atherogenic index of plasma was increased in postmenopausal women (0.22 ± 0.25 mmol/l). This shows that postmenopausal women in our setting are at medium risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Atherogenic index of plasma was positively and significantly correlated with age (r= 0.29, p<0.05), body mass index (r=0.24, p<0.05), systolic blood pressure (r=0.20, p<0.05) and diastolic blood pressure (r=0.45, p<0.05).Conclusions: Postmenopausal women were at greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease when compared to premenopausal women due to increase in atherogenic lipid profile. There was a significant correlation of atherogenic index of plasma with age, body mass index, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure.Keywords: Keywords: Atherogenic index of plasma; lipid profile; menopause.

Objective: There is lack of data regarding lipid patterns and the relationship of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP with glycemic control in Malaysian diabetes patients. This study aimed to assess the lipid patterns and association of AIP with HbA1c in diabetes patients at a tertiary care hospital in Malaysia.Methods: The study was conducted on 72 diabetes patients who were randomly chosen and agreed to participate in the study. AIP values were calculated using log triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio. Data were analysed using SPSS 23.Results: Mean age and body mass index (BMI) of the participants were 56.88±8.89 (years) and 28.81±4.78 (kg/m2) respectively. Hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) values were found in 55.5 %, 41.7 %, 45.5 % of total participants respectively and less than desirable HDL values were observed in 25% of total participants. Overall, 37.5% patients were categorised into high-risk AIP category. BMI categories had a significant association with AIP category (p = 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation of AIP with HbA1c (r = 0.34; p = 0.0 04). HDL was negatively correlated with AIP (r = 0.27; p = 0.02). Duration of diabetes and ethnicity showed no significant association with AIP risk values.Conclusion: Diabetes patients in this study exhibited significant lipid abnormalities with increased AIP. AIP was significantly correlated with HbA1c.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Diabetes Melitus are proven to be prone to atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, especially type 2 Diabetes Melitus (T2DM) patient who have higher risk and mortality for cardiovascular risk factor. The Dyslipidemia condition is very common in T2DM as one of the risk factors. Diabetic dyslipidemia is marked by the increased triglyceride (TG), low HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), and increased small dense LDL and apolipoprotein B. Therefore the aim of this study is to assess the differential and correlation between Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), ratio of small dense low density lipoprotein (sdLDL)/lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) and ratio of sdLDL/cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) of controlled and uncontrolled T2DM.METHODS: This study was observational with cross sectional design. In total of 72 patients with T2DM consist of 36 controlled and 36 uncontrolled, participated in this study. The serum TG, HDL-C, sdLDL, LCAT and CETP were examined in their relationship with to T2DM risk.RESULTS: The results of the study indicate that the AIP (p<0.001) increase controlled and uncontrolled T2DM and the ratio of sdLDL/CETP (p=0.004), odds ratio of AIP was 4 (95% CI : 1.501-10.658) and odds ratio of sdLDL/CETP ratio was 4 (95% CI : 1.501-10.658) in uncontrolled T2DM.CONCLUSION: This study showed that the AIP and ratio of small dense LDL/CETP had a significant correlation with the uncontrolled T2DM. Inflammation is associated with a reduced availability of NO in the vasculature. We investigated the possible involvement of altered levels of the substrate (arginine) and the inhibitor [ADMA (asymmetric ω-NG,NG-dimethylarginine)] of NOS (NO synthase). Plasma concentrations of arginine and ADMA, the inflammatory markers CRP (C-reactive protein) and MPO (myeloperoxidase), and oxLDL [oxidized LDL (low-density lipoprotein)] were measured in 369 male and 377 female participants (aged 50–87 years) of a population-based cohort study. The arginine/ADMA ratio decreased significantly across increasing tertiles of CRP and MPO. These negative associations remained significant in a linear regression model with both MPO (P=0.002) and CRP (P<0.001) as independent variables and adjusted for age, sex and cardiovascular risk factors. In a fully adjusted regression model, MPO was positively associated with ADMA {5.4 [95% CI (confidence interval), 1.3–9.4] nmol/l change of ADMA per S.D. increase in MPO; P=0.010}, whereas CRP was not (P=0.36). Conversely, in a fully adjusted model, CRP was negatively associated with arginine [−2.8 (95% CI, −4.0 to −1.6) μmol/l arginine per S.D. of CRP; P<0.001], without a significant contribution of MPO (P=0.23). The relationship between MPO and ADMA became stronger with increasing levels of oxLDL (1.8, 5.2 and 8.7 nmol/l ADMA per S.D. of MPO for increasing tertiles of oxLDL), consistent with the ability of MPO to amplify oxidative stress. In contrast, the relationship between CRP and arginine was not modified by levels of oxLDL. In conclusion, an unfavourable NOS substrate/inhibitor ratio may contribute to the reduced NO bioavailability associated with inflammation.

Dyslipidemia is highly prevalent in sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients and is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases induced by oxidative stress in Africa. The aim of this research was to investigate the correlation between higher atherogenic index of plasma (API) and oxidative stress in a group of patients living with SCA in Cameroon. Methods. A group of 85 homozygote SS patients (male and female) were enrolled at the Central hospital of Yaounde in Cameroon between May and October 2017. After informed consent through the signature of a consent form was obtained, the plasma was collected to determine the lipid profile while the lysate solution of RBC was used to explore some markers of oxidative stress using spectrophotometric methods. Results. Among the 85 patients included in our study, the mean age was 30 ± 5 years and the female to male ratio was 0.97. The majority of the patients (52–81%) had dyslipidaemia, and 22.4% of the patients demonstrated a higher level of atherogenic index of plasma. The patients with a higher level of total cholesterol (TC) (>240 mg/dl) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) (>159 mg/dl) had at least 1,334 fold of malondialdeheyde (MDA) concentration than those with normal level. Also in the same patients, the higher atherogenic plasmatic index (API) significantly (p<0.05) increased with the concentration of MDA. Except HDL-C, the other parameters of lipid profile had significant (p<0.05) correlation with reduced glutathione (GsH) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The significant (p<0.05) and linear regression was found between the increased MDA and higher API. Conclusion. Dyslipidemia increases oxidative stress and higher API which leads to coronary vascular disease in patients with SCA.
