Abstract We study in this paper the effect of the type of information provided by an ecolabel. For this purpose, in the framework of a model of vertical differentiation, we compare the effects of a partial information label (Type I) and a complete information label (Type III) on firms' profits, industry profit, consumers' surplus, environmental damage and social welfare. A partial information label indicates that the environmental quality of a good exceeds some given threshold. The authority issuing a partial information label chooses its labeling criteria while maximizing the social welfare. A complete information label indicates the exact environmental quality chosen by firms. We prove that while a partial information label always improves the social welfare and deteriorates the green firm profit compared to a complete information label, the comparison between the two types of ecolabel in terms of the brown firm's profit, the industry's profit, the consumers surplus and the environment depend in a non-obvious way on the marginal cost of quality and on the environmental sensitivity to quality.

One major concern that has emerged in the post-globalization period is climate change. Given that pollution and environmental degradation is a public bad, the adverse change in the climate of one region will have ubiquitous effect and therefore will hamper the process of sustainable development across the globe. There are substantial links between international trade and environmental issues – one being that of the perverted comparative advantage which evolves mainly out of the neglect of environmental damage caused by productive activities. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to build a theoretical framework related to intra-industry trade with production differentiation based on the environmental quality of the goods and price to address how liberalization of trade happens to affect the environment of the trading nations. The study shows a steep decline in the environmental quality of the good that was relatively cleaner under autarky while a meagre improvement in the environmental quality of the relatively dirtier good. Hence, it is revealed hereby how trade alters the nature of international inequality in the environmental quality of the productive activities.

Abstract Background To analyze the collaboration and reporting quality of the systematic reviews of social welfare in the Campbell collaboration online library. Methods The Campbell collaboration online library was searched for systematic reviews of social welfare and the basic information extracted in order to assess the reporting quality of systematic reviews using a MOOSE checklist. BICOMS-2 and UCINET software were used to produce the social network, and Comprehensive Meta Analysis (Version 2) and STATA 13.0 were used to analyze the related data. Results Fifty-seven systematic reviews of social welfare were included. Twenty-eight items of the included social welfare systematic reviews were rated as complete (≥70%). There were significant differences between ≤2013 and ≥ 2014 in five items. These differences were as follows: research published by one organization or more than one organization in one item, more than three authors or less than four authors in two items, and one country or more than one country in six items. It’s completed about researches with more than one organization, three authors or more than one country. Some items were found to have a low reporting rate of studies published before 2014, by one organization, with less than four authors or one country, respectively. The social network of authors and organizations showed good collaboration. Conclusions Some items could be further improved with regard to the rate of reporting systematic reviews of social welfare in the Campbell collaboration online library. This could improve the overall quality of social welfare systematic reviews.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find the optimal environmental quality criteria for a strategic eco-labeling authority with three objectives (i.e. maximizing the aggregate environmental quality, maximizing the industry profit and maximizing the social welfare). Particularly, the authors investigate how the existence of imperfectly informed consumers affects labeling criteria determination and competition among firms. Design/methodology/approach A game-theoretic modeling approach was adopted in this paper. A three-stage sequential game was modeled and backward induction was used to solve for a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium. To investigate the impacts of the existence of imperfectly informed consumers, the equilibrium, if all consumers are perfectly informed of the eco-label, was studied as a benchmark. Findings A more strict eco-labeling criterion improves revenues for both the labeled and unlabeled firms. It is interesting to find that the eco-labeling criteria to maximize industry profits are stricter than the criteria to maximize social welfare. Moreover, when the fraction of imperfectly informed consumers increases, the eco-labeling criteria to maximize aggregate environmental quality or industry profits will be more strict, while the criteria to maximize the social welfare will be looser. Originality/value The authors analyze the equilibrium strategies for firms against the eco-labeling criteria certified by authority with different objectives. The obtained optimal labeling strategies could provide insightful guidelines for the certifying authority to select the best suitable labeling criteria to achieve its goals.

Subject. The article addresses the implementation of socially oriented development in the Russian Federation and in the countries with traditional models of the social welfare State. Objectives. The aim is to perform a comparative analysis of traditional models of the social welfare State and the Russian Federation on the basis of socio-economic indicators (annual average growth in gross domestic product, inequality, unemployment, migration, the share of tax revenues in gross domestic product, indicators in the sphere of education and healthcare), and reveal the specifics of socially oriented development of the Russian Federation. Methods. The study employs methods of statistical analysis, comparative analysis, and graphic interpretation of statistics. Results. The study unveils similar trends in the social development that exist in traditional models of the social welfare State, the focus of public policy on providing at least minimal social guarantees, the use of social insurance, and extended accessibility of quality social services. It also emphasizes differences that are connected with historical principles of social policy, the level of decommodification due to modern economic development. Conclusions. The comparative analysis enabled to identify the presence of elements of considered models in the model of socially oriented development of Russia and directions of further measures for increasing socio-economic indicators, including the increase in life expectancy and quality of life for citizens, improvement of the quality of social services, reduction of inequality, promotion of high rates of economic growth, renovation of equipment and facilities, and training highly qualified specialists.

The ancient tombs in Samga, Hapcheon, are proof of an ancient unglazed stoneware culture that follows the production and distribution systems of the inland Haman style. The stoneware excavated from Samga’s ancient tombs share similar compositions and change patterns with Haman-style stoneware. Tombs built after the early 4th century’s type I-1 separate-pit wooden chamber tombs were strikingly different from the previous tombs of Samhan Period in terms of size and the artifacts buried therein. The type I-1 wooden chamber tombs belonged to the local rulers of the Samga area in Hapcheon. This discovery suggests the emergence of a small state in the area, away from the center of Byeonhan and Jinhan, and a glimpse of the social and economic background of the builders of the Samga’s ancient tombs of that period. The early 5th century saw a temporary emergence of similar stoneware types across the Yeongnam region. The ancient tombs in Samga also held a type of stoneware culture centered on mounted cups that characterized the transitional period until the establishment of the post-Gaya stoneware style. Before the establishment of the post-Gaya stoneware style in the early 5th century, the ancient tombs in Samga already featured large wooden chamber tombs with crushed stones covering their entire lengths. The overwhelming size of the chamber and the quality of the funerary artifacts indicate that the tombs belonged to the highest rulers of western Gyeongsangnam-do as well as Samga area. The emergence of the builders of the ancient tombs in Samga in the late 5th century represents the establishment of the stratified central-tomb-peripheral-tomb system and the emergence of multi-chamber tombs in the Sogaya region. Specifically, the same assemblage and stylistic changes centered on stoneware styles appeared, with the establishment of a weaponry system focused on iron helmets and war swords. The artifacts from gigantic multichamber tombs built on hills in this period confirm the introduction and spread of foreign culture. These artifacts also show the pattern of exchange among Gaya factions in the area and their expansion. The cultures of Aragaya and, in particular, Daegaya began in the early 6th century, as can be seen from the tombs of local rulers. However, the style of the tombs implies that the multi-chamber tombs built with methods unique to the area continued until the first half of the 6th century. The funerary artifacts found in the M-2, 3, and 4 tombs in Zone I—which include iron-plate ritual utensils with bird decorations, round-pommel swords with three-leaf patterns, and horse harnesses—show that the ancient tombs in Samga are the central tombs of Sogaya, which is further supported by the internal and external capabilities of the area.
