Abstract Background: Previous studies have found a significant positive association between obesity, visceral fat accumulation and hyperuricemia. The purpose of the study was to explore the association between the ratio of visceral fat area to leg muscle mass(VFA-to-LMM) and hyperuricemia, and verify the role of sex differences in the association.Methods:In this cross-sectional study, a total of 3393 (43.3% for men) participants from Tianjin Union Medical Center-Health Management Center were recruited. Body composition were measured by multielectrode bioelectrical impedance analyzer. The VFA-to-LMM ratio was used as independent variable. Hyperuricemia, defined as a serum uric acid level ≥ 416 μmol/L in men and menopausal women, and ≥ 357 μmol/L in premenopausal women, was used as the dependent variable. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval between VFA-to-LMM ratio and hyperuricemia.Results:The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia was 14.8%, and the prevalence of hyperuricemia in women (8.9%) was significantly lower than that in men (22.5%). After adjustment for age, smoking status (for males), menopause status (for females), drinking status, exercise frequency, blood pressure, alanine aminotransferase, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, and history of diseases, a strong positive association was observed between VFA-to-LMM ratio and hyperuricemiain bothmen (4th vs. 1st quartile 1.60, 95%CI: 1.03-2.49) and women (4th vs. 1st quartile 5.22, 95%CI: 2.44-12.56).After additionally adjustment for BMI, there was still a significant positive association in women (4th vs. 1st quartile 2.57, 95%CI: 1.06-6.77), while the association disappeared in men(4th vs. 1st quartile 0.97, 95%CI: 0.55-1.70).Conclusions:The VFA-to-LMM ratio was positively associated with the risk of hyperuricemia in women after adjustments for confounders. In addition, the highest risk of hyperuricemia was observed when both VFA and LMM were at the highest quartile. However, well-controlled prospective studies are needed to further confirm the causality between VFA-to-LMM ratio and hyperuricemia.

The results of subgroup analysis showed that pre-menopausal women (4th vs. 1st quartile OR: 3.61) have a higher risk of hyperuricemia than postmenopausal women (4th vs. 1st quartile OR: 1.94) with the increase of the VFA-to-LMM ratio. Besides, the interaction analysis results showed the highest risk of hyperuricemia when VFA and LMM were both in the highest quantile (OR: 11.50; 95% CI: 4.86–31.98). Conclusion The VFA-to-LMM ratio was positively associated with the risk of hyperuricemia in women after adjustment by confounders. Pre-menopausal women have a higher risk of hyperuricemia than postmenopausal women with the increase of the VFA-to-LMM ratio. In addition, the highest risk of hyperuricemia was demonstrated when both VFA and LMM were at the highest quartile.

Abstract Background The prevalence of peri-implantitis ranges between 7 and 38.4% depending on risk indicators such as smoking, diabetes mellitus, lack of periodontal maintenance program, and history or presence of periodontitis. Currently, the possible effect of the type of superstructure on peri-implant health is unclear. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the influence of the superstructure on the prevalence of peri-implant mucositis, peri-implantitis and peri-implant dysbiosis. Methods During a 32-month recruitment period dental implants were assessed to diagnose healthy peri-implant tissues, mucositis or peri-implantitis. The study included 1097 implants in 196 patients. Out of all peri-implantitis cases 20 randomly chosen submucosal biofilms from implants with fixed denture (FD) originating from 13 patients and 11 biofilms from implants with removable dentures (RD) originating from 3 patients were studied for microbiome analysis. Composition of transcriptionally active biofilms was revealed by RNAseq. Metatranscriptomic profiles were created for thirty-one peri-implant biofilms suffering from peri-implantitis and microbiome changes associated with superstructure types were identified. Results 16.41% of the implants were diagnosed with peri-implantitis, 25.00% of implants with RD and 12.68% of implants with FD, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed a significant positive association on patient (p =  < 0.001) and implant level (p = 0.03) between the prevalence of peri-implantitis and RD. Eight bacterial species were associated either with FD or RD by linear discriminant analysis effect size method. However, significant intergroup confounders (e.g. smoking) were present. Conclusions Within the limitations of the present work, RDs appear to be a risk indicator for peri-implantitis and seem to facilitate expansion of specific periodontopathogens. Potential ecological and pathological consequences of shift in microbiome from RDs towards higher activity of Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies animalis and Prevotella intermedia require further investigation.

History is replete with examples where humans have sought refuge in nature for psychological restoration. In this cross-sectional study we explore the relationship of nature experience and mindfulness. Nature experience is assessed through “nature in the neighbourhood”, “frequency of visit” to nature-rich spaces, as well as one's inherent connection with nature described as “nature relatedness”. The study sample consisted of 334 Indian adults. The findings from this study show that frequency of visit to nature-rich spaces has a significant positive association with mindfulness. The hierarchical regression analysis suggests an interaction effect of “nature relatedness” in the association of the presence of nature rich spaces in the neighbourhood, frequency of visit as well as mindfulness. Interestingly, when childhood experiences were explored they had a significant association with “nature relatedness” and mindfulness. The evidence from this research suggests that nature experience may find its application as one of the mindfulness techniques prescribed for self-management of mental health problems.

AbstractBackground and Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between visceral fat area (VFA), estimated by bioimpedance, and cardiovascular risk factors independent of BMI and waist circumference in a cohort of Romanian patients. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, in which were collected data from 751 patients ≥18 years of age from Cluj-Napoca. Anthropometric, biochemistry, body composition and medical history parameters were recorded from patients’ files. Results: Compared with the participants with VFA <100 cm2, those with VFA ≥100 cm2had significantly worse levels of the laboratory parameters describing the glycemic metabolism, lipid metabolism and liver functions (p <0.05 for all). A higher percentage of participants with VFA ≥100 cm2had diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and hypo-HDL cholesterolemia (p <0.05 for all). VFA was correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total and LDL-cholesterol levels, triglycerides, ALT, previous diagnosis of diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia and hypo-HDL cholesterolemia independent of BMI and waist circumference. Conclusions: Among this cohort of Romanian adults, an increasing level of visceral adiposity was correlated with worse lipid and glucose metabolism parameters as well as with increased levels of ALT, which probably reflects liver fat deposition.

Introduction: Limited data are available on the association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. The present study was conducted to investigate the association of DII with MetS and its components among Iranian adults. <br /> Methods: A total of 404 subjects, aged 18 years or older, were included in the current cross-sectional study. We used a validated and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intakes. Fasting blood sample was obtained to quantify glycemic indicators and lipid profile. MetS was defined based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). <br /> Results: Mean age of study participants was 38.20 ± 9.55 years. No significant association was found between DII and odds of MetS (odds ratio [OR]: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.48-1.76). In terms of MetS components, a significant positive association was seen between DII scores and reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR: 2.29, 95% CI: 1.32-3.97); such that after controlling for energy intake, demographic variables and BMI, participants in the highest category of DII had 2.71 times greater odds for having reduced levels of HDL-C (OR: 2.71, 95% CIs: 1.34, 5.47). There was no other significant association between other components of MetS and DII scores either before or after adjusting for confounding variables.<br /> Conclusion: We observed no significant association between DII and odds of MetS. However, higher score of DII was associated with lower levels of HDL.

Abstract Background The absence of thyroid cysts may indicate latent thyroid damage, as demonstrated in our previous study. However, the association between the absence of thyroid cysts and latent functional damage of the thyroid is unknown. At low thyroid hormone productivity, which may be associated with latent functional damage of the thyroid, the association between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and hypertension might be enhanced. Therefore, we evaluated the association between TSH level and hypertension stratified by thyroid cyst status. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1724 euthyroid Japanese individuals aged 40–74 years who participated in an annual health checkup in 2014. Results In the study population, 564 and 686 participants had thyroid cysts and hypertension, respectively. A significant positive association was observed between TSH and hypertension in subjects without a thyroid cyst but not in subjects with thyroid cysts. There was a significant positive association between hypertension and TSH in subjects without a thyroid cyst (odds ratio [OR] 1.27; 95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.01, 1.61) but not in subjects with thyroid cysts (OR 0.79; CI 0.57, 1.09) in the model fully adjusted for known confounding factors. The correlation between the TSH and free triiodothyronine (fee T3) levels (simple correlation coefficient [r] = − 0.13, p < 0.01) was stronger in the subjects without thyroid cysts than in those with thyroid cysts (r = − 0.03, p = 0.525). Conclusions TSH is positively associated with hypertension only in individuals without thyroid cysts. The correlation between the TSH and free T3 levels was stronger in the subjects without thyroid cysts than in those with thyroid cysts. Therefore, the absence of thyroid cysts could be related to the association between TSH level and hypertension, possibly by indicating that the subjects without thyroid cysts had limited thyroid hormone reserves. Therefore, the absence of thyroid cysts could indicate the latent functional damage of the thyroid.

Abstract Background Limited and inconsistent epidemiological evidence for the relationship between vitamin D level and risk of osteosarcopenic obesity. We aimed to find out the relationship between serum level of 25-(OH)-D3 and osteosarcopenic obesity.Methods This study was a cross-sectional study. Residents from nine communities of the Tiexi District of Shenyang City were enrolled from May to October 2017. We included 4,506 eligible participants (1,601 men) for analyses. Participants were asked for an overnight fast. Thereafter, Blood samples were collected, and serum level of 25-(OH)-D3 was estimated using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. We undertook logistic regression models adjusted for most known osteosarcopenic obesity risk factors. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.Results Our study included a total of 4,506 participants (2,905 women). In multivariable-adjusted analyses, compared to the lowest tertile, a higher 25-(OH)-D3 level (OR was 0.77, 95% CI was 0.61, 0.98; and P for trend was 0.026) was inversely correlated with osteosarcopenic obesity. A positive association between vitamin D deficiency and osteosarcopenic obesity was found (OR was 1.33, 95% CI was 1.10, 1.62). Inverse relationships between serum level of 25-(OH)-D3 and low bone mass, as well as low muscle mass were found (P values for trend were 0.035 and 0.014, respectively). However, vitamin D deficiency only showed a positive correlation with low muscle mass (OR=1.26, 95 %CI: 1.07, 1.44).Conclusion An independent inverse dose-response association of serum 25-(OH)-D3 level with osteosarcopenic obesity, as well as its compositions was found. Our findings implied that serum 25-(OH)-D3 could be a good predictor of osteosarcopenic obesity in older northeastern Chinese.
