Abstract It has been empirically observed that the income structure of the vast majority of populations in market-economy countries follows an exponential distribution. The empirical evidence has covered more than 66 countries, ranging from Europe to Latin America, North America, and Asia. Here, to further support exponential income distribution as a signature of the well-functioning market economy, we empirically show how the income structure of China evolved towards an exponential distribution after the market-oriented economic reformation. In particular, we strictly prove that, if the income structure of an economy obeys an exponential distribution, the income summation over all households leads to a neoclassical aggregate production function, in which the technology factor is exactly equal to society’s information stock. This finding provides an insight into understanding the underlying implication of technological progress.JEL Classification: O33; D31; D83; C46

This paper provides attempts to formalize Hayek’s theory of knowledge. It has been theoretically shown that exponential income distribution is a spontaneous order of the well-functioning market economy. We show that this theoretical result is supported by the empirical evidence from the United Kingdom and China. In particular, we empirically show how the income structure of China evolved towards an exponential distribution after the market-oriented economic reformation. Furthermore, we strictly prove that, if the income structure of an economy obeys an exponential distribution, the income summation over all households leads to an aggregate production function with Hicks-neutral-like technical progress, in which the technology factor is exactly equal to society’s information stock that is a result of combining all of decentralized decisions.

AbstractPurpose: Some universal accessibility practitioners have voiced that they experience a mismatch in the research focus and the need for knowledge within specialized problem domains. This study thus set out to identify the balance of research into the main areas of accessibility, the impact of this research, and how the research profile varies over time and across geographical regions. Method: All UAIS papers indexed in Scopus were analysed using bibliometric methods. The WCAG taxonomy of accessibility was used for the analysis, namely perceivable, operable, and understandable. Results: The results confirm the expectation that research into visual impairment has received more attention than papers addressing operable and understandable. Although papers focussing on understandable made up the smallest group, papers in this group attracted more citations. Funded research attracted fewer citations than research without funding. The breakdown of research efforts appears consistent over time and across different geographical regions. Researchers in Europe and North America have been active throughout the last two decades, while Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Middle East became active in during the last five years. There is also seemingly a growing trend of out-of-scope papers. Conclusions: Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed to the UAIS editorial board.

This article examines the impact of institutional, financial, and economic development on firms’ access to finance in Latin America and Caribbean region. Based on firm- and country-level data from the World Bank databases, we employ an ordered logit model to understand the direct and moderating role of institutional, financial, and economic development in determining firms’ financial obstacles. The results show that older, larger, facing less competition and regulation burden, foreign owned, and affiliated firms report lower obstacles to finance. Second, better macro-fundamentals help to lessen the level of obstacles substantially. Third, the role of institutions in promoting firms’ inclusive finance is quite different to the role of financial development and economic growth. JEL classification: E02; G10; O16; P48

Abstract To what extent is International Relations (IR) a globalized discipline? We investigate the geographic diversity of authorship in seventeen IR journals from Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the United Kingdom. Biographical records were collected for the authors of 2,362 articles published between 2011 and 2015. To interpret the data, we discuss how publishing patterns are driven by author incentives (supply) in tandem with editorial preferences and strategies (demand). Our main findings are twofold. First, global IR is fragmented and provincial. All journals frequently publish works by authors located in their own region—but the size of these local clusters varies. Geographic diversity is highest in what we identify as the “goldilocks zone” of international publishing: English-language journals that are globally visible but not so competitive that North American authors crowd out other contributions. Second, IR is being globalized through researcher mobility. Many scholars have moved to pursue their doctoral education and then publish as expats, returnees, or part of the diaspora. They are joined by academic tourists publishing in regions to which they have no obvious ties. IR journals thus feature more diverse backgrounds than it may seem at first sight, but many of these authors were educated in North America, the United Kingdom, and Europe.

AbstractPeter D. Crittenden served as senior editor of The Lichenologist, the flagship journal in the field of lichenological research, for a period of two decades, between 2000 and 2019. A review of the development of the journal and the publication output during this period is provided. The number of papers published during this period (1197) matches that of all papers published under the three previous senior editors, Peter W. James, David L. Hawksworth and Dennis H. Brown, during a much longer period of 42 years from 1958 to 1999. Peter oversaw important editorial changes to the layout and content of the journal: an increased size with a modern cover design, leaving behind the classic mint-coloured cover of more than 40 years; the addition of ‘thematic issues’ and encouragement of large monographs; implementation of substantial changes to the Code, such as effective electronic publication and obligate registration of new fungal names; and more recently a new policy to reject so-called ‘single naked species descriptions’. Shortly before Peter took over as senior editor, The Lichenologist had received its first impact factor, and Peter managed to continuously increase this measure from around 0.9 to lately up to over 1.5, higher than most other competing journals. The 1197 papers between 2000 and 2019 were published by a total of 1138 different authors, more than half of whom appeared just once as author, whereas a small number participated in numerous (up to 93) papers. There was a continuous increase in the mean number of authors per paper per year, from below 2.5 to around 3.5, the highest numbers ranging between 11 and 30; still, c. 75% of all papers between 2000 and 2019 were single-authored or had up to three authors. Based on affiliations at the time of publication, two thirds of author contributions came from Europe (66%), 13% from North America, 9% from Asia and 7% from Latin America. Likewise, almost half of the study areas were located in Europe and around 10% each in North America, South America and Asia. The countries with the highest number of studies included, in descending order, the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden. North America and Europe were over-represented in terms of author contributions, whereas Africa, Latin America, Australia and Oceania were over-represented in terms of study areas. The 1197 papers analyzed encompassed a broad diversity of topics, classified into 32 categories. Taxonomy of lichenized fungi was the most frequent component, representing the focal point in almost half of all studies, followed by phylogeny and evolution, ecology, and the taxonomy of lichenicolous fungi. Around two thirds of the currently accepted genera of lichenized fungi were treated, with a significant correlation between known species richness and the number of papers in which a genus was treated, underlining the taxonomic representativity of papers published in the journal during the past two decades. Examples of genera that were treated more frequently than expected included commonly studied model organisms, such as Lobaria, and those frequently featured in ecological or other non-taxonomic studies, such as Xanthoria. Species-rich tropical genera, particularly in the Graphidaceae, were generally under-represented. Mean number of authors per paper per volume and total number of country origins of authors per volume were the best predictors of impact factor, followed by diversity of study countries per volume, mean number of study countries per paper per volume, mean number of topics per paper per volume, and proportion of studies with phylogenetic components per volume. Individual papers that contributed to high impact factors included broad-scale revisionary treatments and worldwide keys to species-rich taxa, substantial phylogenetic reclassifications of known taxonomic groups, papers dealing with novel methodological approaches of broad interest, and broad-scale studies related to environmental change and lichen biomonitoring.

Background: Intensive risk factor modification significantly improves outcomes for patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the degree to which secondary prevention treatment targets are achieved in international clinical practice is unknown. Methods: Attainment of 5 secondary prevention targets—aspirin use, lipid control (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) <70 mg/dL or statin therapy), blood pressure control (<140 mmHg systolic, <90 mmHg diastolic), angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker use, and non-smoking status—was evaluated among 14,671 patients from 38 countries with diabetes and known CVD at entry into TECOS. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between individual and regional factors and target achievement. Results: Overall, 29.9% of patients with diabetes and CVD had all 5 secondary prevention measures at target. North America had the highest proportion (41.2%), whereas Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Latin America had proportions of approximately 25%. The likelihood of having individual prevention components at target also varied by region: compared with North America, individuals in all other regions were less likely to have blood pressure at goal, and individuals in Eastern Europe and Latin America were less likely to have LDL-C at target or to be on statin therapy (see Figure). Overall, blood pressure control (57.9%) had the lowest overall attainment while non-smoking status had the highest (89%). Conclusions: On a global scale, significant opportunities exist to improve the quality of cardiovascular secondary prevention care among patients with diabetes and CVD, which in turn could lead to reduced risk of downstream cardiovascular events.

To quantify the growth in GHG emissions related to international trade, we build an extensive database for export-related production and transportation GHG emissions covering 189 countries and 10 sectors from 1990 to 2014. We employ this database to quantify the contribution of production and international transportation to total export-related GHG emissions from Latin America and the Caribbean and decompose growth in these to contributions of the increase in the regions trade flows, shifts in the composition of trade partners, changes in the traded product basket, and technological progress.

The monograph develops the theory of production functions and their systematic typology. It looks at the relationship between inputs and outputs as a universal relationship that is used not only in economics but also in other disciplines. In addition to the static production function, special attention is paid to the dynamization of individual quantities and the issue of expressing the effect of changes in these quantities on the change in production. It is explained why in the aggregate production function expressed through aggregate factor input and aggregate factor productivity it is necessary to use a multiplicative relationship, why the multiplicative link is also suitable in terms of total input factor and why the share of weights in labor and capital should be the same. The use of the production function is demonstrated on the development of the economies of the USA, China and India and on the ten largest economies of the world in terms of absolute GDP, on cryptocurrencies and on the so-called farming role.In addition to a comprehensive overview of production functions, the monograph also enriches new ideas that arose during long-term computational and analytical activities of economic and business. Particularly innovative is the generalization of the production function to any system with variable inputs and outputs. The production function can thus be recognized in many identities. The original intention of the research was to examine the intensity of economic development, but it turned out that it is closely related to production functions. The impetus for this research comes from Prof. Ing. František Brabec, DrSc. a genius mathematician, designer, economist and manager, former general director of Škoda in Pilsen and later rector of ČVÚT.The presented typology of production functions is not limited to one area of economics, but goes beyond it. The monograph respects the definition of the static production function as the maximum amount of production that can be produced with a given number of production factors. On this function, which can be effectively displayed using polynomial functions of different orders,significant points can be systematically defined, ie the inflection point, the point of maximum efficiency, the point of maximum profit and the point of maximum production. The purpose is to optimize the number of inserted production factors. The text is preferred the point with the greatest effectiveness. If this quantity does not correspond, for example, to demand, it is possible to choose another technology, which will be reflected in a shift in the static production function. At the same time, the important points of these functions describe the trajectory, which has the nature of a dynamic production function. For a dynamic production function, the crucial question is how the change in individual factors contributes to the overall change in output. If the production function is expressed through inputs and their efficiency, dynamic parameters of extensibility and intensity can be defined, which exactly express the effect of changes in inputs and the effect of changes in efficiency on changes in outputs for all possible situations. Special attention is paid to the aggregate production function. It explains why it should be expressed as the product of the aggregate input factor (TIF) and aggregate factor productivity (TFP), or why the term TIF should be expressed as a weighted product of labor and capital, in which the value of labor and capital weights could be and identical. The monograph here surpasses the traditional additive view of the multi-factor production function by proposing a multiplicative link, which also allows the derivation of growth accounting, but with a new interpretation of weights and (1-), which do not need to be calculated for each subject and each year.The time production function is used to forecast the GDP development of the US, China and India economies until 2030 and 2050, respectively. It is also predicted an increase in the absolute GDP of Indonesia, a stable position of Russia and the loss of the elite position of Japan and Germany.The monograph also deals with the hitherto unresolved question of whether, even in economics, it is also necessary in certain circumstances to take into account a phenomenon called quantization in physics. It turns out that quantization is a common thing in economics, which is documented on specific forms of production functions that respect quantization in economics.The monograph also deals with the relationship between the efficiency of an individual given the use of a certain point on a specific static production function and common efficiency, ie all actors together. These examples assume limited resources. The sum of the outputs of all actors depends on how the actors share these limited resources. It can be expected that there will be at least one method of distribution that will bring the highest sum of outputs (products, crops) of all actors. This result, however, also depends on the shape of the production functions. This is investigated using EDM, i.e.elementary distribution models. EDM for polynomial production functions of the 2nd to 5th order are not yet published in summary. Of the new findings, they are the most interesting. When using two polynomial production functions, the EDM boundary becomes linear if the inflection point is used for both production functions. If we are above the inflection point, the EDM is properly concave. It turned out that the "bending" of the production function in the region of the inflection point can be modeled using a quantity of the order of the respective polynomial. The higher the order of the polynomial, the higher the deflection can be achieved. This proved to be a very important finding in modeling specific production functions. This effect cannot be achieved by combining other parameters.

Contemporary public administration reflects its historical roots as well as contemporary ideas about how the public bureaucracy should be organized and function. This book argues that there are administrative traditions that have their roots centuries ago but continue to influence administrative behavior. Further, within Western Europe, North America, and the Antipodes there are four administrative traditions: Anglo-American, Napoleonic, Germanic, and Scandinavian. These are not the only traditions however, and the book also explores administrative traditions in Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Islamic world. In addition there is a discussion of how administrative traditions of the colonial powers influenced contemporary administration in Africa. These discussions of tradition and persistence also are discussed in light of the numerous attempts to reform and change public administration.
