Abstract Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the consistency of bladder filling before and during radiotherapy for pelvic cancer patients.Methods: Before radiotherapy, 105 patients followed a strict bladder protocol of consuming 540mL of water immediately after emptying the bladder. Bladderscan device BVI 9400 was used after emptying bladder and measured every 30 minutes until the bladder volume achieve 400mL. When emptying, half an hour and 1 hour after drinking, chief complaint of urgency, the actual bladder volume and corresponding time were described as: U0, t0; U0.5, t0.5; U1, t1; Ut, t; UT, T. During radiotherapy, 18 patients were randomly selected from 105 patients. They were instructed to keep the same pattern of suppressing urination during the following radiotherapy. The chief complaint of urgency during radiotherapy was observed and recorded. The relative bladder volume was as close as possible to (50%,155%).Results: Before radiotherapy, patients were no statistically difference between U1 (P=0.177) and UT (P=0.052) in the Immobilization, Simulation CT scan, X-ray Simulation. Bladder volume was concentrated at 298-526mL. There was no statistical difference between Ut and UT in X-ray Simulation(P=0.198). Patients emptied bladder volume for 75.2±49.9min, Ut=331.2±140.3mL. During radiotherapy, 18 (18/105) patients received a total of 450 bladder volume (18*25). UP and UT were statisticall different (P<0.05), and the difference was 17.81%. The overall relative bladder volume was negatively correlated with the number of radiotherapy (r = -0.5726, p = 0.0028) and the consistency rate was 82.89% (373/450). 15 patients (15/18) passed, and the consistency rate was 96% (360/375). 3 patients (3/18) failed, and the consistency rate was 17.33% (13/75). The consistency rate had no linear correlations with age (P = 0.2741). Conclusions: U1 was consistent in the Immobilization, Simulation CT scan, X-ray Simulation and during inter-fraction radiotherapy. This indicates that the consistency range is reasonable. Relative bladder volume between (50%,155%) can determine whether the bladder filling of patients with pelvic cancer is consistent with the planned bladder volume before radiotherapy.

Although difference Fourier techniques are standard in X-ray crystallography it has only been very recently that electron crystallographers have been able to take advantage of this method. We have combined a high resolution data set for frozen glucose embedded Purple Membrane (PM) with a data set collected from PM prepared in the frozen hydrated state in order to visualize any differences in structure due to the different methods of preparation. The increased contrast between protein-ice versus protein-glucose may prove to be an advantage of the frozen hydrated technique for visualizing those parts of bacteriorhodopsin that are embedded in glucose. In addition, surface groups of the protein may be disordered in glucose and ordered in the frozen state. The sensitivity of the difference Fourier technique to small changes in structure provides an ideal method for testing this hypothesis.

Ordered Ni3Fe crystals possess a LI2 type superlattice similar to the Cu3Au structure. The difference in slip behavior of the superlattice as compared with that of a disordered phase has been well established. Cottrell first postulated that the increase in resistance for slip in the superlattice structure is attributed to the presence of antiphase domain boundaries. Following Cottrell's domain hardening mechanism, numerous workers have proposed other refined models also involving the presence of domain boundaries. Using the anomalous X-ray diffraction technique, Davies and Stoloff have shown that the hardness of the Ni3Fe superlattice varies with the domain size. So far, no direct observation of antiphase domain boundaries in Ni3Fe has been reported. Because the atomic scattering factors of the elements in NijFe are so close, the superlattice reflections are not easily detected. Furthermore, the domain configurations in NioFe are thought to be independent of the crystallographic orientations.

Objective: Physicians who often request for computed tomography (CT) scan examinations are expected to have sound knowledge of radiation exposure (risks) to patients in line with the basic radiation protection principles according to the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the Protection of Persons Undergoing Medical Exposure or Treatment (POPUMET), and the Ionizing Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R). The aim is to assess the level of requesting physicians’ knowledge of ionizing radiation from CT scan examinations in two Nigerian tertiary hospitals. Materials and Methods: An 18-item-based questionnaire was distributed to 141 practicing medical doctors, excluding radiologists with work experience from 0 to >16 years in two major teaching hospitals in Nigeria with a return rate of 69%, using a voluntary sampling technique. Results: The results showed that 25% of the respondents identified CT thorax, abdomen, and pelvis examination as having the highest radiation risk, while 22% said that it was a conventional chest X-ray. Furthermore, 14% concluded that CT head had the highest risk while 9% gave their answer to be conventional abdominal X-ray. In addition, 17% inferred that magnetic resonance imaging had the highest radiation risk while 11% had no idea. Furthermore, 25.5% of the respondents have had training on ionizing radiation from CT scan examinations while 74.5% had no training. Majority (90%) of the respondents were not aware of the ICRP guidelines for requesting investigations with very little (<3%) or no knowledge (0%) on the POPUMET and the IR(ME)R respectively. Conclusion: There is low level of knowledge of ionizing radiation from CT scan examinations among requesting physicians in the study locations.

Abstract Background Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have an increased or normal BMD; however fragility fractures represent one of the most important complications of T2DM. Aims This study aimed to evaluate whether the use of the Radiofrequency Echographic multi spectrometry (REMS) technique may improve the identification of osteoporosis in T2DM patients. Methods In a cohort of 90 consecutive postmenopausal elderly (70.5 ± 7.6 years) women with T2DM and in 90 healthy controls we measured BMD at the lumbar spine (LS-BMD), at femoral neck (FN-BMD) and total hip (TH-BMD) using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry device; moreover, REMS scans were also carried out at the same axial sites. Results DXA measurements were all higher in T2DM than in non-T2DM women; instead, all REMS measurements were lower in T2DM than in non T2DM women. Moreover, the percentage of T2DM women classified as “osteoporotic”, on the basis of BMD by REMS was markedly higher with respect to those classified by DXA (47.0% vs 28.0%, respectively). On the contrary, the percentage of T2DM women classified as osteopenic or normal by DXA was higher with respect to that by REMS (48.8% and 23.2% vs 38.6% and 14.5%, respectively). T2DM women with fragility fractures presented lower values of both BMD-LS by DXA and BMD-LS by REMS with respect to those without fractures; however, the difference was significant only for BMD-LS by REMS (p < 0.05). Conclusions Our data suggest that REMS technology may represent a useful approach to enhance the diagnosis of osteoporosis in patients with T2DM.

Abstract Purpose The application of the anatomical parameters of the contralateral hip joint to guide the preoperative template of the affected side relies on the bilateral hip symmetry. We investigated the bilateral hip symmetry and range of anatomical variations by measurement and comparison of bilateral hip anatomical parameters. Methods This study included 224 patients (448 hips) who were diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femur head, and underwent bilateral primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in our hospital from January 2012 to August 2020. Imaging data included 224 patients X-ray and 30 CT data at the end of the cohort. Anatomical parameters, including the acetabular abduction angle and trochanteric height, were measured using the Noble method. Postoperative measurements included stem size, difference of leg length and offset. Results Except for the isthmus width, there were no significant differences in the anatomical morphology of the hip joint. Among the demographic factors, there was a correlation between body weight and NSA. Among various anatomical parameters, a correlation was present between medullary cavity widths of T + 20, T, and T − 20. The difference in the use of stem size is not due to the morphological difference of bilateral medullary cavity, but due to the different of 1- or 2-stage surgery. Conclusion Bilateral symmetry was present among the patients with normal morphology of the hip medullary cavity, theoretically confirming the feasibility of structural reconstruction of the hip joint using the hip joint on the uninjured side. Additionally, the difference in the morphology of the hip medullary cavity is not present in a single plane but is synergistically affected by multiple adjacent planes.

Purpose: Approximately 5%–10% of men who receive prostate cancer radiotherapy will suffer from radiation cystitis. Bladder filling before the administration of radiotherapy results in lower radiation exposure to the bladder. BladderScan, an ultrasound-based bladder volume scanner, has the potential to evaluate bladder volume during radiotherapy; thus, a prospective pilot study was initiated. Methods: Eleven men receiving tomotherapy for localized prostate cancer were enrolled. The validity of BladderScan was evaluated by comparing the measurements from BladderScan with the calculated volume from megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT). With a crossover design to compare different methods in bladder filling, the radiotherapy was divided into 2 sequences. Conventional method: the patient was asked to drink water after voiding urine. The amount of water and the duration of waiting were the same as in the setting of the simulation. BladderScan feedback method: the bladder filling procedure depended on the BladderScan measurements. Results: There were 314 sets of data from 11 patients. The correlation coefficient between VBS and VCT was 0.87, where VBS is the mean volume of 3 measurements by BladderScan and VCT is the bladder volume derived from MVCT. The BladderScan feedback method resulted in a significant larger bladder volume than the conventional method, with a mean difference of 36.9 mL. When the failure was defined as VCT <80% of planned volume, the BladderScan feedback method brought about a relative reduction in the failure rate with an odds ratio of 0.44 and an absolute reduction of 9.1%. Conclusion: The accuracy of BladderScan was validated by MVCT in our study. The BladderScan feedback method can help patients fill the bladder adequately, with a larger bladder volume and a lower failure rate.
