This essay takes up the question of transmission in the context of politics and projects of memory from the last decade. I have dubbed this period “the decade of memory, of remembrance”. The first decade of the 21st century saw an exponential growth in digital platforms, focused on catastrophes and conflicts in the previous century as well as more recent events. Public, academic, and institutional initiatives were accompanied by a public and private support to recover the memory of the past in Spain and Europe. This recovery effort placed intangible heritage, and memory at the centre of contemporary historical efforts. Our work and references are analysed from the projects of the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) criteria, objectives but also technical tools.

This Handbook tells the story in 25 chapters of how Japan’s HE system has become what it is now, ending with a very tentative glimpse into the rest of the 21st century. A variety of themes are covered by scholars—both established, senior figures and younger researchers with their own fresh look at current circumstances. Chapters that concentrate on governance look at the distinction between "national," "public," and "private" institutions; others consider important topics such as internationalization, student recruitment, faculty mobility. More innovative topics include "Women of Color Leading in Japanese Higher Education." All provide copious references to other authorities, but rather than just toe the conventional line they include opinions and proposals that may be contentious or even revolutionary. The editor provides an overview of the subject and its treatment in an Introduction. -- Rights Statement: Amsterdam University Press has exclusive rights to sell the print Handbook in all territories excluding Japan, Taiwan and Korea. --

Privatizing social services has taken a new turn as America enters the 21st century. Although it was once possible to separate private and public social services, the growing trend toward public–private partnerships has made such earlier distinctions meaningless since more and more private social services are supported with public money. There are advantages and disadvantages inherent in the mixing of public and private social services, but perhaps the greatest problem may be the support of a growing trend for all levels of government to dissociate themselves from their longstanding public social service responsibilities.

Controversy over gender roles is a major issue in contemporary society. The debates surrounding gender and sexuality have extended to arenas far beyond the home; political platforms and religious views have inherited the torch, continuing the argument into the 21st century. This essay will show that the discomfort arising from the blurring of traditional bourgeois gender roels which allocated public life to men and private life to women is at the heart of these debates. By following the historical progression of these arguments and tracing the establishment of gender roles back to their roots, this essay intends to better the understanding of both the origins of this discomfort and the application of gender roles today.

The beginning the photographic activity of Carlos Relvas (1838-1894) is closely connected to stereoscopic photography. This fact has not always been quite clear since Carlos Relvas’s stereoviews have remained one of the least known sides of his photographic work. The dispersion of his stereo cards among several public and private collections, as well as the long period of inaccessibility to his archive of negatives, hindered the perception of the meaningful work that Carlos Relvas carried out in the production of stereoscopic views of Portugal. One of the main challenges of the 21st-century studies of photography lies in the opportunity to publish online images from early photography collections. Digital media can enhance these collections and expand their reading. Among the main beneficiaries will be photographic negatives, which will gain new heuristic importance in this new environment of mediations. That was our intuition by developing a digital catalogue for the collections of Carlos Relvas’s stereoscopic photography aiming to bring together and combine all his negatives and positives and thus, for the first time, allow a comprehensive image of his passion for this type of photography.

Role of ICT and knowledge among professionals of organizations directly affects the quality of output. In this study the levels of aspect for utilization of ICT resource at workplace among professionals from different organizations in Karachi have assessed. These organizations belong from different sectors including public and private. Data was obtained from the employees of different organizations through online questionnaire. The Survey was conducted from October 15 – December 4, 2015. Questions were asked about its effect on their lives and work. A Sample of 24 employees was responded to the questionnaire and was completed for analysis. A total of 24 employees were assessed for frequency distribution of ICT Knowledge factors and descriptive analysis test was used to see the association of online system, computer exposes organization works, usage of the latest technology, internet, E-commerce and different statistical software's related to ICT knowledge. The study has few recommendations on the basis of data analysis and findings. Although the knowledge of ICT is good but some professionals and organizations are not utilizing the ICT resources completely to achieve the better results. They should improve and enhance their staff skills and knowledge through different trainings and upgrade their systems for fulfillment of their requirements and productive outputs. In addition, the Government of Pakistan has established the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication Division in March 2000. The Ministry of IT is building Pakistan's IT competency to meet the challenges of 21st Century. Similarly, IT Departments are created in all Provinces for taking initiative for development of IT as per requirement of 21st century and promotion of IT education and development. The local institutions and universities do not seem to produce highly skilled people in the field of IT, especially, in certain required fields, such as programming and hardware engineering. The strength of IT education and proper trainings in the relevant field are essential. However, it seems that the focus of our educations institutions is on the quantity of the number of students being awarded degrees each year rather than imparting quality education. Thus, the challenges of the 21st century cannot, undoubtedly, be met with the present human resource. We strongly suggest taking serious measures and reforms in the education system, support IT industry in order to create a good job market, and attract investors from around the globe by providing subsidized business.

France used to have one of the most powerful cultural diplomacy: it needs nowadays to modernize its strategy to hold on to its international position. France has a long history of foreign cultural policy and is one of the few countries that have placed great emphasis on fostering its culture abroad. However, the French position is currently being challenged by emerging international rivalries. Establishing a cultural strategy in the 21st century requires not only a consistent approach between the projection of an elite culture and of a pop culture, but also a joint action between public and private players. Japan could be a model, even a paradigm for France and its cultural action abroad, as well as an ally through a cultural alliance.
