Academic success in undergraduate programs is indicative of potential achievements for graduates in their professional careers. The reasons for an outstanding performance are complex and influenced by several principles and factors. An example of this complexity is that success factors might change depending on the culture of students. The relationship of 32 factors with the reported academic performance (RAP) was investigated by using a survey distributed over four key universities in Saudi Arabia. A total of 3565 Saudi undergraduate students completed the survey. The examined factors included those related to upbringing, K-12 education, and structured and unstructured activities. Statistical results validate that many factors had a significant relationship with the RAP. Among those factors, paternal’s education level and work field, type of intermediate and high schools, and the attendance of prayers in mosques were significantly associated with the reported performance. This study provides important insights into the potential root causes of success so that they can be targeted by educators and policy makers in the effort to enhance education outcomes.

s not it deplorable that in a country that tops in the entire world in using several social media sites does not utilize the same media in acquiring knowledge and skills? In Saudi Arabia, undergraduate students spend a significant amount of time on social media every day, but they are reluctant (or not motivated enough) to use the same media for educational purposes. This study was carried out on the undergraduate English majors of King Khalid University in Muhayil Asir in Saudi Arabia. In the English department, every student carries at least one smart phone with Internet connection, and they are found occupied with their phones on the campus, sometimes even in classrooms, but they are weak both in subject knowledge and skills of English language. The teachers-cum-researchers were baffled with students’ competence because regular users of Internet and social media are supposed to be updated with the subject knowledge as well as confident in using English language. The researchers designed an empirical study to explore students’ rationale of using the social media and their language preference. The study concludes with gloomy findings that students use the media mainly for entertainment and ineffective communication in English language. The worst fact is: they are not motivated enough to use the social media for educational purposes.

Introdução: Os pacientes, diabéticos é um público comum no consultório. Os cirurgiões dentistas fazem uso e prescrevem medicamentos que auxiliam na prevenção e cura de doenças orais, tornando necessário um conhecimento apropriado para a correta indicação de uma determinada doença. Dessa forma, o objetivo do presente estudo é descrever a compreensão dos acadêmicos do Curso de Odontologia do Unifunec sobre seus conhecimentos e o manejo de pacientes com hipertensão, diabetes e gestantes em relação aos anestésicos locais utilizados e à terapêutica medicamentosa. Material e Métodos: Os alunos matriculados no quinto ano do curso de odontologia foram convidados a responder 22 questões sobre perfil pessoal e a prática clínica de atendimento odontológico dos pacientes especiais. Os dados obtidos foram divididos em certos e errados e registrados no Software Microsoft Excelem tabelas elaboradas. Resultados: As tabelas e os gráficos estão exemplificados nos resultados e na discussão. Participaram da pesquisa 68 alunos, sendo que a maioria era do sexo feminino, atendem em clínica escola 100% dos alunos entrevistados. A maioria das questões obteve uma porcentagem de acertos favorável ao da literatura com algumas questões chegando a 90%. Do total de perguntas, as que apresentaram um percentual de acerto menor de 50% foram as questões sobre a anestesia local no paciente diabético e gestante. Conclusão: A compreensão dos graduandos sobre a consulta odontológica de pacientes hipertensos, diabéticos e gestantes encontrou-se em torno de 56%.   UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT’S KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DENTAL APPOINTMENT FOR HYPERTENSIVE, DIABETIC AND PREGNANT PATIENTS   ABSTRACT Introduction: Hypertensive and diabetic patients are frequent in dental offices. Dental surgeons make use and prescribe medications which help in the prevention and cure of oral diseases; it requires appropriate knowledge in order to properly write prescriptions to certain diseases. Consequently, this paper aims at describing the understanding of the undergraduate students’ Dentistry School at Unifunec about their knowledge and management of hypertensive, diabetic, and pregnant patients regarding the use of local anesthetic and drug therapy. Material and methods: Undergraduate students who were enrolled in the fifth year of Dental School were invited to answer 22 questions about personal profile and clinical practice for those particular patients’ dental care. The obtained data was classified as right and wrong and recorded at the Software Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Results: Spreadsheets and graphics are exemplified in results and discussion.  Sixty-eight undergraduate students participated in the study, most of them were female, 100% of them assisting patients at a dental school clinic.  Most of the questions obtained a favorable percentage of correctness in accordance to the literature with some questions hitting 90% correctness. From the total of the questions, questions about local anesthetics for diabetic and pregnant patients obtained less than 50% correctness. Conclusion: The understanding of the undergraduate students about dental appointment for hypertensive, diabetic, and pregnant patients was found to be around 56%.   Keywords: Hypertension. It is important to practice critical skills in the classroom in order to empower learners and to have a critical consciousness, such as critical thinking, dialogue, and problem solving. In the present study, undergraduate students' perceptions (by gender) of the practice of critical consciousness in the classroom at Taif University, Saudi Arabia is investigated. Freire's conceptualization of critical consciousness is used as the study's theoretical framework. That conceptualization is focused on critical thinking, dialogue, and problem-solving. A quantitative approach is utilized with a self-administered questionnaire in collecting data from the respondents. The results of this study indicated that Saudi undergraduate students' perspective was positive about the practice of the three elements of critical consciousness. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences at α = 0.05 among undergraduate students' perspective on the practice of critical consciousness, including dialogue, critical thinking, and the total practice based on their gender. The direction of the differences was a benefit for females.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and perception of radiation hazard and preventive measures among dental undergraduate students, general practitioners, endodontic postgraduate students, and endodontists in Saudi Arabia. Multiple choice questions questionnaires were distributed among undergraduate and endodontic postgraduate dental students, general practitioners, and endodontists in the colleges of dentistry in Saudi Arabia, government hospitals, and private clinics. The questionnaire included sociodemographic data, assessment of the knowledge of radiation physics and biology, assessment of the practice of dental radiography, and assessment of knowledge of radiation protection. Chi-square test was used for individual and multiresponse analysis. Level of statistical significance was set at P≤0.05. Three hundred and twenty-nine responded to the questionnaire. More than half of the respondents agreed that dental X-ray is hazardous to health (60.79%), and 68.1% were familiar with ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle. However, only 34% are familiar with the recommendations of the National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) and International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The use of lead apron and thyroid collar for patients’ protection from X-ray radiation was practiced among endodontic postgraduate students more frequently as well as those who are proactive in the academic field. Undergraduate students, endodontic postgraduate students, and endodontists in the academic field were the most aware towards radiation reduction measures. The use of the preventive measures needs to be emphasized more among general practitioners, endodontic postgraduate students, and endodontists especially in governmental hospitals and private sectors.
