The paper deals with the friction stir welding (FSW) of the high strength EN AW 7075-T651 aluminium alloy with the aim to analyze the influence of welding parameters on the mechanical properties of Al-weld joints. FSW represents relatively novel solid-state technology of material joining which can be successfully applied for welding of several metallic alloys including the high-strength aluminium alloys that are hard to weld by conventional fusion welding processes. In cooperation with VÚZ - PI SR Bratislava, nine experimental weld joints of samples with dimensions of 300 × 150 × 10 mm were prepared using the welding machine of the FSW-LM-060 type and different parameters of welding – the welding speed from 60 to 120 mm/min and the tool rotation rate from 600 to 1000 rpm in clockwise direction. The quality of weld joints was evaluated by static tensile tests and micro-hardness measurements. According to obtained results of tensile testing, the average values of ultimate strength of weld joints are by 32.2 % lower comparing with the ultimate strength of the base material. On the other hand, the ductility increased by 7.2 %. The highest micro-hardness of weld joints at the level of 129 HV was measured in thermo-mechanically affected zone on the retreating side.

Underwater Friction Stir Welding (UFSW) is a solid-state joining technique which uses a non-consumable tool to weld metals. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the mechanical properties of the AA5052 Aluminium alloy joints prepared by UFSW. The effect of different type of welding tools and welding parameters on the weld joint properties are studied. Square, tapered cylindrical and taper threaded cylindrical type of welding tools have been used to produce the joints with the tool rotational speed varying from 500 rpm to 2000 rpm while the welding speed varying from 50 mm/min to 150 mm/min. Tensile strength, micro-hardness distribution, fracture features, micro-and macrostructure of the fabricated weld joints have been evaluated. The effect of welding process parameters that influences the mechanical properties and fracture characterization of the joints are explained in detail. A maximum Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) value of 222.07 MPa is attained with a gauge elongation of 14.78%. Microstructural evaluation revealed that most of the fracture are found on the thermal mechanically affected zone (TMAZ)adjacent to the weld nugget zone (WNZ) due to bigger grain sizes. It is found that most of the joints exhibit ductile characteristics in failure. Fractography analysis has been used to find the behavior of weld joints in failure.

The main aim of the present topic is friction stir welding (FSW) of Aluminium HE-30, which shows that improved microstructures, strong weld and with less of defects. In the other hand, an attempt was made to correlate the welding parameters and mechanical properties. In the present investigation four rotational speeds of 1000 rpm, 1200 rpm, 1400 rpm and 1600 rpm with travelling speed of 30 mm/min. and tool geometry (straight cylindrical) was chosen. It was observed that the tool rotational speed is a sensitive parameter to decide the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the present material. Similarly, the hardness of Al plates is improved at the weld zone. Hence, it is suggested that to consider a parameter such as welding tool rotational speed, travelling speed and materials in selecting the welding methods of sound joints, because it influences the microstructure and mechanical properties in various applications. In the present study, non-destructive tests are also confirmed the defective nature of the weld zone of Al plates.

The effects of 40 mm width bottom plates on the microstructural modifications and the mechanical properties of a 6 mm thick FSW AA6061-T6 joint have been investigated. The bottom plates are placed partially at the weld zone to absorb and dissipate heat during the welding process. An axial load of 5 to 7 kN, a rotational speed of 500 rpm, and a welding speed of 50 mm/min are employed as welding parameters. The size of the nugget zone (NZ) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the weld joints obtained from AISI 1040 steel bottom plate is more significant than that of weld joints obtained using copper bottom plate due to lower thermal conductivity of steel. Also, the weld joints obtained using copper bottom plate have fine grain microstructure due to the dynamic recrystallization. The friction stir welded joints obtained with copper bottom plate have exhibited higher ductility of 8.9% and higher tensile strength of 172 MPa as compared to the joints obtained using a steel bottom plate.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of friction stir welding (FSW) parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of Sc-modified AA2519 extrusion joints. The workpiece was welded by FSW in non-heat-treated condition with seven different sets of welding parameters. For each obtained joint macrostructure and microstructure observations were performed. Mechanical properties of joints were investigated using tensile test together with localization of fracture location. Joint efficiencies were established by comparing measured joints tensile strength to the value for base material. The obtained results show that investigated FSW joints of Sc-modified AA2519 in the non-heat-treated condition have joint efficiency within the range 87–95%. In the joints obtained with the lowest ratio of the tool rotation speed to the tool traverse speed, the occurrence of imperfections (voids) localized in the stir zone was reported. Three selected samples were subjected to further investigations consisting microhardness distribution and scanning electron microscopy fractography analysis. As the result of dynamic recrystallization, the microhardness of the base material value of 86 HV0.1 increased to about 110–125 HV0.1 in the stir zone depending on the used welding parameters. Due to lack of the strengthening phase and low strain hardening of used alloy the lack of a significantly softened zone was reported by both microhardness analysis and investigation of the fractured samples.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is an alternative method to join aluminum (Al) alloys in a solid-state condition. However, the coarsening or dissolution of precipitation hardening phases in the welding zone causes strength reduction or softening behavior in the welded area of age-hardened Al alloys. Therefore, this research aimed to improve the mechanical properties of an FSW Al–Mg–Si alloy via post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and the possibility of controlling the abnormal grain growth (AGG) using different welding parameters. FSW was performed with different rotational and travel speeds, and T6 heat treatment was carried out on the FSW samples as the PWHT. The results showed a decrease in the strength of the FSW samples compared with that of the base material (BM) due to the dissolution of precipitation hardening particles in the heat-affected zone. However, the emergence of AGG in the microstructure after the T6-PWHT was identified as the potential event in the microstructure of the PWHT samples. It is found that the AGG of the microstructure in similar joints of Al6061(T6) was governed by the welding parameters. The results proved that PWHT was able to increase the tensile properties of the welded samples to values comparable to that of Al6061(T6)-BM. The increased mechanical properties of the FSW joints were attributed to a proper PWHT that resulted in a homogeneous distribution of the precipitation hardening phases in the welding zones.

In order to obtain better understanding of the friction stir weldability of the magnesium alloy and provide some foundational information for improving mechanical properties of retardant magnesium alloy joints. A retardant magnesium alloy was weld using the method of friction stir welding. The influence of welding parameters on the strength of the joint was investigated. The maximum strength of 230 MPa was obtained from the joint welded at the tool rotational speed of 1000 r/min and welding speed of 750 mm/min.

Aluminum-Lithium alloys have been found to exhibit superior mechanical properties as compared to the conventional aerospace aluminum alloys in terms of high strength, high modulus, low density, good corrosion resistance and fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Even though they do not form low-melting eutectics during fusion welding, there are still problems like porosity, solidification cracking, and loss of lithium. This is why solid state friction stir welding is important in this alloy. It is known that using Al-Cu-Li alloy and friction stir welding to super lightweight external tank for space shuttle, significant weight reduction has been achieved. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of friction stir tool rotation speed on mechanical and microstructural properties of Al-Cu-Li alloy. The plates were joined with friction stir welding process using different tool rotation speeds (300-800 rpm) and welding speeds (120-420 mm/min), which are the two prime welding parameters in this process.
