In this study, the mechanical and microstructural properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr cast alloy with 0.1% Sc under homogeneous, dissolution, and T6 and thermomechanical treatments with the aim of increasing the volume fraction of MgZn2. Al3(Sc,Zr) reinforcing precipitates were examined by hardness, microscopic examinations, tensile tests and software analysis. The results showed that, firstly, the hardness results are well proportional to the results of the tensile properties of alloys and, secondly, the strength of the alloy with thermomechanical treatments compared to T6 treatments increased from 492 MPa to 620 MPa and the elongation increased from 8% to 17% and was 100% upgraded. Microstructural and fracture cross section investigations showed that Al3(Sc,Zr) nanosize dispersoids were evenly distributed among MgZn2 dispersoids and the alloy fracture was of semi-ductile type and nanosize dispersoids less than 10 nm were observed at the end of the dimples in the fracture section. The volume fraction of nanosize dispersoids in the whole microstructure of thermomechanical treatment samples was also much higher than that of T6 heat treated samples, so that the percentage of Al3(Sc,Zr) precipitates arrived from less than 1% in T6 operation to 8.28% in the quench-controlled thermomechanical operation (with 50% deformation). The quality index (QI) in thermomechanical treatment samples is 19% higher than T6 samples, so that this index has increased from 641 in T6 operation to 760 in samples under thermomechanical treatment due to precipitate morphology, volume fraction of precipitates, their uniform distribution in the matrix, and nano sized precipitates in samples under thermomechanical treatment.

This paper aims at an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of mechanical and microstructural properties of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel (W. Nr. 1.4404, CL20ES) produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) technology. The experiment in its first part includes an extensive study of the anisotropy of mechanical and microstructural properties in relation to the built orientation and the direction of loading, which showed significant differences in tensile properties among samples. The second part of the experiment is devoted to the influence of the process parameter focus level (FL) on mechanical properties, where a 48% increase in notched toughness was recorded when the level of laser focus was identical to the level of melting. The FL parameter is not normally considered a process parameter; however, it can be intentionally changed in the service settings of the machine or by incorrect machine repair and maintenance. Evaluation of mechanical and microstructural properties was performed using the tensile test, Charpy impact test, Brinell hardness measurement, microhardness matrix measurement, porosity analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy. Across the whole spectrum of samples, performed analysis confirmed the high quality of LPBF additive manufactured material, which can be compared with conventionally produced material. A very low level of porosity in the range of 0.036 to 0.103% was found. Microstructural investigation of solution annealed (1070 °C) tensile test samples showed an outstanding tendency to recrystallization, grain polygonization, annealing twins formation, and even distribution of carbides in solid solution.

Abstract AlSi7Mg0.6 alloy is the most widely used cast alloy for aerospace and automotive applications. Therefore, it is essential to explore the effect of scanning strategies parameters on the final part properties in the L-PBF process. The effect of stripes and chessboard strategies parameters such as stripes length, rotation angle, and chessboard island size on mechanical and microstructural properties of L-PBF processed AlSi7Mg0.6 alloy is studied. The evolution of the residual stresses is also investigated in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Cooling rates are also estimated using the cell size within the melt pool. Three distinct regions (i.e., fine, coarse, and heat affected zone) within the melt pool corresponding to different cooling rates could be identified based on Si morphology. The texture of the final material can be tailored by changing the scanning strategies. This study comprehensively presents the results concerning porosity, mechanical properties, crystallographic texture, cooling rates, grain morphology, and residual stresses for additively manufactured AlSi7Mg0.6 alloy.

In the current investigation, AA2024 aluminum alloy is reinforced by alumina nanoparticles using a friction stir process (FSP) with multiple passes. The mechanical properties and microstructure observation are conducted experimentally using tensile, microhardness, and microscopy analysis methods. The impacts of the process parameters on the output responses, such as mechanical properties and microstructure grain refinement, were investigated. The effect of multiple FSP passes on the grain refinement, and various mechanical properties are evaluated, then the results are conducted to train a hybrid artificial intelligence predictive model. The model consists of a multilayer perceptrons optimized by a grey wolf optimizer to predict mechanical and microstructural properties of friction stir processed aluminum alloy reinforced by alumina nanoparticles. The inputs of the model were rotational speed, linear processing speed, and number of passes; while the outputs were grain size, aspect ratio, microhardness, and ultimate tensile strength. The prediction accuracy of the developed hybrid model was compared with that of standalone multilayer perceptrons model using different error measures. The developed hybrid model shows a higher accuracy compared with the standalone model.

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are materials in which metals are reinforced with other materials preferably of lower cost to improve their properties. In this present study, Brass /Coconut Shell Ash powder (CSAp) composites having 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% weight CSAp were fabricated by stir-casting method. The tensile strength of the MMCs is in the order 15% > 10% >5% > 0% of CSAp. Hardness of the MMCs increases slightly with increase in the percentage body weight of CSAp, in the order 15% > 10% >5% > 0% of CSAp. The highest impact energy of 61 J was obtained for 5% CSAp. However, significant improvement in tensile strength and hardness values was noticeable at the 15%. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis of the MMCs shows dendritic structures formation, the reinforcing particles (CSAp) are visible and clearly delineated in the microstructure. Hence, this study has established that reinforcing brass matrix with coconut shell ash particles can result in the production of low cost brass composites with enhanced tensile strength, hardness and impact energy values.
